I wasn't even born when it was her prime but I find this woman a true artist. Singers nowadays are mostly celebrities who are famous because of the PR work behind. Madonna was authentic and a true trailblazer of her time.

The “American Life” album was ahead of its time. I think that Madonna was political before it was popular to be. No matter how old she gets she will always be a legend in my eyes. 😊

American Life is severly underrated, it ranks amongst her best, maybe more so if you're a fan of Madonna rather than a casual listener. Perhaps he best lyrics and so personal.

I vehemently disapprove of how Matt Lauer was asking such condescending questions to Madonna, as well as making hurtful comments to her about her age and relevance to humanity. He is rude, superficial, uncaring, and clearly not a nice person at all. Madonna is an ICON, and her legacy is far more than anything that Matt has, or will ever, accomplish in his lifetime. Let us also keep in mind that just a few years short years later after this interview, Madonna released "Confessions on a Dancefloor," which is one of her best-selling albums of all time. Aside from that album alone, she has had other albums that have all been of stellar quality and sales, and even further, ALL of her tours been equally stellar, enough to make her the biggest female musical touring artist of all time, combined with being the best-selling female artist of all time. Where is Matt now? He just got fired for sexual misconduct, while Madonna is working on new material for a next album and possible tour. Karma in action? I would say so. :) Show less REPLY

Alvin Adhin I was squirming the whole time. She is an artist. He goes into the interview buying the whole idea that she’s 100% about the marketing. He is missing out on an interesting story-a woman finding out what really makes her happy.

That's an interesting point, I had never noticed that. She definitely moved into very artistic/unconventional territory with AL, both musically and lyrically. It's just not an album you expect from the world's most successful pop singer. AL is my favourite Madonna record but it was doomed to fail. People don't want to hear her complain about her privileged life over a distorted folktronica arrangement. Still I think it was a bold move for somebody with her level of fame and popularity.

I agree, but unfortunately he was asking what a lot of Americans seemed to question about Madonna at the time. The rest of the world got it, it was a massive success in the UK and Australia, but the US was butt-hurt without looking at it from a greater point of view. Unsurprisingly Madonna was right in the end.

I hope that Madonna will be as artistic as she was during this period of her career and release an brave album that will divide people, but also give her artistic freedom again. The "American Life" album had some great songs on it. Yes, it was not a masterpiece in my opinion, as some of the songs did not life up to her previous standards, but I think that she was brave to make an album with those lyrics. Yes, she did pull the original music video for the "American Life" song, but she did do it because it would mean that she would not get airplay for her singels and people at this time was praising George W. Bush not realising what mistakes he made during his time as president. You can call Madonna whatever you want but she is a smart and intelligent woman. Madonna will always be able to get the press talking about her product no matter what she is trying to sell to the public. I respect Madonna and her legacy. :)

I completely agree. Matt had a very good point here and Madonna wasn't able to answer his question convincingly. Personally I think she pulled the video for personal safety reasons but she didn't want to admit that because it would make her look like a coward. The American Life controversy is a very interesting event in Madonna's career, in my opinion it was the point when she lost her artistic audacity. She has made some very good pop music since then but mostly played it safe.

That whole Madonna performance at the Tower records. I remember them saying it was for the fans. Not workers of Tower Records. Here in Chicago there was that Queen Fantasya that did work there. @gerryowen42005 жыл бұрын
Madonna backed down at this time because she was married to guy Richie...it’s a shame because although the album wasn’t that commercial she spent a few years denying the strides she had made. Although the presenter was harsh there was truth in what he was saying...she was blacklisted anyway on American radios and has had success since but her legacy is vanishing in the USA. But the rest of the world has got her back and her music is on the radio all the time and in clubs.

I exactly remember the day when she pulled that video back. As someone who grew up in a war zone and a life long Madonna fan I knew her brand was „cracking“! That was big big mistake! American life was the last time that she impressed me in terms of artistic expression. I have lost my respect for her art and never again did she make a great video after American life! The videos started to look cheaper with each project (yes, the confessions videos wer atrocious) and so did the music turn more and more generic. By the time she started jumping on the bandwagon of what americans call „EDM“ ( for us in Europe it is called „Euro trash“ since the early 90ies) the music was unbearable!

As much as I love Madonna, this album is my least fav from her. There are only a few tracks on it that I enjoy. I own it because I collect her work but that's about it. I'm not opposed to hearing a deeper side of Madonna, however, the whole thing came off to me as poorly written(lyrically) & pretentious. This is my least favorite point in her career.
