I am a fan of Madonna's but dismissing people's concern about her taking this child away from his home as ignorance and sensationalism to sell newspapers is very "reductive" to quote the queen. My lecturer at university, an anthropologist, has spent years in Africa, not just a few days here and there like M (who would also be surrounded by YES people I imagine) and my lecturer thought it was a form of child theft/selling these adoptions. She actually studies family relationships in Africa and they are much more complex and very different from ours. Orphanages are often a form of "boarding school" for families who can't afford to look after their children but they still remain involved with their children. So I think David's father's issues about him being taken away were very real and I think the Malawi government let it happen because of who Madonna is and the money and press she generates for the country. Whether M realises this or not is another question, the real complexities were possibly hidden from her. But it was not a great situation to say the least.
