I can't believe Thriller came in 1982 and was STILL being nominated in 1985... that's how huge that album was. Just unbelievable.
@amedeo296 жыл бұрын
Well, Thriller was released November 30th, making it too late to be an entry for the 1983 awards (held in Feb of 83) Thriller the song was the final single from the album, and wasn't released until 1984, which is when the stunning music video came out, hence it being up for awards the following year. The Grammy's are held every February, and the cut off for eligible albums is September 30th of the previous year. So an album released in October of 2017 won't be eligible for a grammy until the February 2019 awards shows. Weird, I know. The album of course was huge, its almost always at the very top of every list for best albums of the 1980s, and best pop albums ever. But that being said, there are rules for when music is up for awards, and it has to have had release within a window of dates. And that is why this song was eligible. Otherwise, we probably would have seen all his albums up for awards all over again in 2010, with the awards that followed his 2009 death.

Funny story though.. at the time artists that were born out of the 70s, like Joni Mitchell and Elvis Costello, often remarked that 80s music was garbage, and made similar "What the hell happened to music" comments. To this day 80s music has lots of haters. The 80s took rock and punk and made it more commercial with hair bands etc. The movement towards electronic music gave "real musicians" a bad taste in their mouth. A lot of great dance music came out of the 80s, and a lot of great pop. Singer/songwriters and guitar driven bands have long cursed the 80s for being too commercial sounding, and lacking any true talent. The truth is these people were trapped in the past, lacked innovation, and by the 1990s no one was talking about them.

1985 was a year especially busy for Madonna. The video for "Material Girl" came out on 1 February, the movie "Vision Quest" in February & the movie "Desperately Susan" came out in early March. Thanks to the "Vision Quest" soundtrack, especially the single "Crazy For You", Madonna got her 1st Grammy nomination. Also during the shooting of "Material Girl" Madonna knows Sean Penn & married.

I think Gaga is the only one that actually could come close and replaced Madonna. Both are amazing in their own way. Madonna on other hand a tougher competition than LG. Tina Turner, Cindy Lauper, Laura Branigan,,,and others. But Madonna was always changing and adapting to the new things and that is what made her the Queen of pop.
