In one of her interviews from that era she said she has the joy of living. I feel that joy is visible in this performance in every way; she’s all smiles, looks so relaxed carefree and I really feel the joy is is affecting her voice too. Big thanks always for your Madonna reactions! Never know where you'll land next! She trained extensively, and really for the first time ever, a couple years prior when she recorded the Evita soundtrack and it was evident. Not only did it improve her range, it gave her the confidence to really explore it. The background video was taken directly from the official RoL video. Technically one of the longest music video shoots ever. No stock footage was used as a "shortcut". Director shot in many different locations in 4 or 5 cities over several weeks to get enough footage to cover the whole song when it was super sped up.

Such a nice surprise to see today. Love your Madonna performance reactions. When Madonna made Evita in 1996 she began vocal training with one of the top vocal coaches in the world. She discovered a different part of her range. The singing is almost operatic. I think I remember Madonna saying that she laughed because for her to go that high in her vocal range made her laugh (could be wrong about that). Yes the entire point of this performance was to do a very basic performance where she just focused on the vocals as she was known for the big production performances. Interesting thoughts regarding Taylor Swift. Taylor said that the 1989 album was inspired by songs like Like A Prayer and other 80s songs. When Madonna performed Living for Love at the Grammys in 2015 Taylor was singing and dancing in the front row. She loves Madonna

Omg haven’t seen this performance in a long time and wow this is a great example of Madonna’s strength as a performer. She can just walk onto a stage and captivate and energize an audience! It’s like she puts a spell on you it’s natural and casual at the same time and you can’t look away! Def watch her 2015 Grammy performance of living for love I always thought that was among her best especially in more recent years. It’s a different vibe than this of course it’s more stage art and whatnot but she still is able to pull off that natural and casual vibe despite all the theatrics. It’s really what makes her stand on her own. Flawless stage presence!

I think this is one of the only times she sang ROL live in this key. On the Drowned World tour and other subsequent live performances she sings it in a lower key. The flip side of this performance is the VMA performance of Ray of Light in '98 when Lenny Kravitz played guitar - vocals are off throughout. But I remember taping this Oprah special and I watch the ROL performance to death!

You gotta understand: Madonna was hitting 40 YO, bringing a whole new sound (Electronica) to American mainstream, in a moment in music where women were considered old at the age of 29 ("old" as in, radio will not play you anymore so you better retire) and also Madonna was representing women who became mothers for the first time later in life (this is very common today but back in the 90s it was not as much) so she was back with her first born daughter, and just rocking the stage with her post-Evita well-trained voice, just effortlessly SLAYING on live TV. Just amazing. And what can I say about the song? I mean, fucking anthem.

Taylor and Madonna are both great, but I do think they are very very different performers. Taylor, I think, is, overall, more warm in her performances, and would miss a step to hit the right note. Madonna dances more (you’ll see this in other, more choreographed numbers, this one isn’t really one of them) and has more of that “look at me now” vibe (although is sometimes warm), and would be more willing to miss a vocal note than to miss a dance step.

Told ya! 😏 she had just gone through filming Evita for which she got a lot of vocal training and her vocal range got a lot richer. In terms of other live performances to watch, I’d recommend the opening number of the Confessions Tour, Future Lovers, which is truly a work of art from her best ever tour in my humble opinion. It is the best ever tour opening of any artist I have ever and will ever see. It is truly perfection where all forms of art merge to create an exhilarating experience! ☺️👍🏻 keep the reactions coming and I hope you fully recovered from feeling sick

From award shows I would suggest Hollywood at the VMAs which has a reference to Like A Virgin at the first ever VMAs, Express Yourself (VMAs), You Must Love Me (Oscars), Living For Love (Grammys), Hung Up (Grammys). There are many great performances at mini concerts but you can do those after the tours, which are the major deal.

Fun Fact: You just watched the SECOND time Madonna performed this on Oprah. She had done a live performance immediately before this but screwed up a lyric and asked to do it again. I have to think that the second time was probably less nerves and more fun. It was a big deal for HER to be on Oprah and a big deal for Oprah to get Madonna. To me, the light thing you referred to as an allegory is meant to capture the star/light symbol used on the cover art for Ray Of Light. It's also found on every page of the CD booklet liner notes.

This was truly exciting back in the day. The context was a whole new Madonna, a whole new sound, voice and attitude. It was the end of the millennium and people were sort of needing something hopeful and soulful. No social media and Madonna was still THE most famous woman on the planet. Oprah was huge and it was just all capturing the zeitgeist of the time. It was electrifying. Also, I completely agree with the Taylor comparison. I’ve thought they exist in the same realm for a while too.
