It really is frustrating when her messages are misunderstood... Although we know that media in general always prefer the shock value of everything she does rather than the true message behind her work. The sad part of this is a lot people believe what media portrays about her and they miss the opportunity of knowing her, her work, her messages, deeply. Thank U beautiful ladies!

I never thought she would outdo this performance, I was gobsmacked back in the day, and then of course, she did outdo herself with the celebration tour, which I think is equally powerful if not even more. Both performances hits close to home for me and many of her fans who live with HIV. I myself was 20 when I became positive back in 1995, being told back then to expect to live to no longer than 35 if lucky. But when I saw this performance 11 years later, lifesaving medicine had finally come around, so my future at least (I live in Europe) did not look so bleak no more. But the epidemic is still raging on - even today in 2024 it is massively out of control in places like Russia, Brazil, China and of course still in many parts of Africa. In China the amount of reported cases increased with 7000% from 2002-21. In South Africa an estimated 10% of the population lives with HIV. An estimated total 42.000.000 people have died of Aids since the beginning of the epidemic - it truly is the greatest tragedy of the 20th century as Madonna herself stated from the stage at the Girlie Show in 1993.

Just when you think she could not do a more emotional performance of this song, she outdoes it emotionally during Celebration. I think this is a beautiful performance. Of course, it was harshly criticized. I think every time I’ve seen Madonna be interviewed about something controversial in one of her shows, she always responds with: Have you seen the show?? Fair question. They are usually responding to a clip they have seen. The next song is another favourite performance of mine. It so beautiful!!! And quite relevant in today’s climate…. Sadly. Have a great day ladies! See you tomorrow!! 🪩 💕

It’s so nice seeing how much your perception of this performance has expanded since the first time watching it a year ago. And yes, groups ignore the message and attack her for the sake of being who she is. They are so stuck on her 1992 persona that they ignore everything else she does, specially her directing attention to actual issues like the situation in Malawi (which we see here). It was pretty much the same after her celebration concert in rio, religious groups called it a blasphemy 🤷♂️

Imagine the controversy when Catholics and the media accused her of crucifying herself on stage for shock value. Outside the arena, a religious group was protesting, demanding she cancel that part of the show-despite admitting they hadn’t even seen it. Her message is so beautiful. Yet, she’s constantly criticized, no matter her intentions. Few artists face as much scrutiny as she does. Even adopting her children sparked accusations of “buying” them. Why? Because she’s a woman? Because she expresses herself? This remains her most beautiful performance, even after seeing it a trillion times.

After so many years, I think I’ve finally found the true meaning of the story hidden in the enigmatic lyrics of this song… It talks about a person diagnosed with HIV, seeing himself deteriorate while keeping his secret to himself, with the desire to tell those close to him his truth, with the fear of being rejected, but with the courage to transmit what he now knows, what he has learned so that others do not suffer what he did. When I got it, I couldn’t help me from crying.

Good point about the criticism, it really comes down to it, they do not pay attention not get her message. They just do not take the time. They are quick to say, you can't do that, that's blasphemous and do not understand it really is not. And people are always quick to dismiss Madonna period as attention seeking or doing something for shock effect or being a big star due to controversy when really there is always a reason and genuine message. It takes an open minded, intelligent person to get Madonna. ;)

Malawi is called the "warm heart of Africa", as a South African I can vouch for the citizens of Malawi as a whole, they are some of the warmest, friendliest population on this planet. I'm not surprised at all that she adopted 4 children from there. The affects of HIV/AIDS have been experienced so acutely in the Southern part of the continent the most. Lack of funding, corruption and lack of humanity has been shown against the population through the years culminating in the disease ravaging so many families, even here in S.A. where our former President denied AIDS was a result of HIV and in so doing millions of people were denied the right to medications. In the late 90s and early 2000s I saw so many people I knew succumb to the virus. Thankfully medications have been free to all who need it since then. Madonna really stuck her neck out for this and the condemnation is par for the course. I feel those that condemned her didn't even watch the performance, they just saw the imagery and immediately cast judgment.

Incredible, right? I love the colors chosen. The color of Madonna's clothes is stunning. At the time there was some fake news about the cross, can you believe it? That it was studded with I don't know what, that Madonna was talking about poverty with a cross like that, DOZENS of Christian associations boycotted the show BEFORE it started. Little did they know what the message was. I love the low lighting that makes her look like Christ sometimes By the way Live to tell isnt a convencional balad....is unique Kisses

the second act was her confessions on religion. Many religious people vocied offense even before the tour started let alone before they actually saw it if they did see it She was excommunicated from The Holy Roman Catholic and Apostolic Church for the third time and banned from entering Vatican City for the second time by a second pope for this performance. Pope St John Paul II excommunicated her in 1989 over the Like A Prayer video and excommunicated her and banned from Vatican City in 1990 for The Blond Ambition World Tour and Pope Benedict XVI excommunicated and banned her from The Vatican for this performance. Oddly she displayed the Judgement of Nations Matt 25:30-43 on the projection scenes, that which have done for the least of your brothers, so you have done for God/Christ/The Church ,which is read at every Catholic funeral as they lower the casket into the ground as a reminder that it is the most important teaching of Jesus Christ for a Catholic. Madonna donating to Africa's AIDS orphans and encouraging other to do the same is what Christ would have come off The Cross to do. This first performance is about what Madonna thinks is the most important message of all religions. I was born, baptized and confirmed Catholic and minored in Catholic Theology at the University of San Diego. one of my maternal great aunts was a nun a Benedictine Sister of Perpetual Adoration from the age of 25 until her death 72 years later at 97. one of my heroes and very progressive. the thanksgiving the confessions tour broadcast on NBC we got into a play argument because i said Madonna was fhe queen of pop and she believed it was Lady Gaga. when i came out at the age of 20 back in 2001 Sister sent email to all of my family parents, grandparents, siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins, great aunts and uncles, 2nd cousins, 3rd cousins etc reminding them lgbt people are children of God..one thing that drew me to Madonna as a child was not only her use of Catholic iconography but also how its meaning us honored. because Live to tell is very emotional for her she has only done it in full on The Who's That Girl Tour, truncated on The Blond Ambition World Tour and Confessions Tour and full version on The Celebration Tour. the last few years she's been spotted attending mass again. part of being a life long fan is just not being bothered what others say. Vanity Fair in their look back of the 1000 and looking forward to the 2000 issue declared Madonna the most important pop star in history but said she'd never get her dues in her life time because she was woman who did what she wanted and did wanted to make straight white males or or any straight man happy and wouldn't be seen as a serious muscian because she wasn't a granola singer songwfiter like Joni Mitchell or a gospel like singer like Arthea Franklin or Whitney Houston but focused on dance music which is where the gays are

"Vanity Fair in their look back of the 1000 and looking forward to the 2000 issue declared Madonna the most important pop star in history..." After getting this far on our Madonna journey, we can certainly understand why she's earned that title. Even if others don't always recognize all of her contributions to music (and the world), her fans know she's an icon for a reason. Sending lots of love your way! ❤️
