This was her "audition" for Evita! She sent along this video with an 8 page letter to Alan Parker as why she was the right one to play her. This video is pure gold, so luscious and beautiful. Thank you empress!

@@slimlouis6441No. It was Take a Bown. In the early 1990s Madonna had signed a lucrative film deal with Disney, where Glenn Gordon Caron (of Moonlighting fame) hoped to produce his own Evita screenplay. Madonna’s interest was piqued, but she considered Disney’s budget too low, and this version also fizzled out. However, she was still determined to play Evita, even teasing a Buenos Aires audience with a few bars of ‘Don’t Cry for Me Argentina’ during her Girlie Show tour in 1993. A year later, Disney’s Hollywood Pictures committed to a $60 million production, to be directed by Alan Parker. Although his preferred leading lady was Michelle Pfeiffer, Parker was struck by an impassioned, four-page letter that Madonna wrote to him over the 1994 Christmas holiday, along with a copy of her Latin-themed ‘Take A Bow’ video. Pfeiffer became pregnant, and did not want to shoot Evita on location. Madonna was back in the ring, but her chequered acting career made her a risky proposition. Lloyd-Webber was concerned that her immense fame would overwhelm the picture, and unconvinced by her vocal range. Sir Tim Rice, however, favoured the singer to play the part over a more conventional actress. After accepting a flat $1 million fee - and forgoing a percentage of the film’s profits - Madonna signed on for Evita in 1995.

One of her most beautiful videos...aesthetically satisfying with a clear narrative to accompany what would become one of her biggest hits. Wearing John Galliano couture was a perfect choice. He was really hitting it big at this time and known for re-contextualizing historical fashion in a modern way. The '40s vibe also served her well in that she submitted this video as an "audition tape" to the director of Evita in her campaign to convince him to cast her in the role.

This video was filmed in Ronda Spain. It’s a beautiful town in southern Spain only an hour from the military base. That car ride was bumpy because of the cobblestone streets in that town. It’s an amazing town with a gorge cutting through the center of it. One of the many white towns of Andalusia. There’s an MTV special about the making of this video you should watch whether you do a reaction to it or not

Always with one eye on the next prize, Madonna used this video as her audition tape for Evita. She won her second out of three "Best Female Video" VMAs for this video as well. This song and video was in heavy rotation on the radio and VH1 and MTV, and I believe that it is still her longest running no. 1 single on the hot Billboard 100 charts. It's funny that it has so many accolades but it's still one of her quieter and less spoken about hits out of all the hits Madonna has had throughout her career. Goes to show how storied her career has been so far.

Madonna was going through a transitional period. She was about to be offer the role of Evita which to her was the role of a lifetime and Madonna has always been a strong believer of the law of the universe; specifically the law of attraction ( which is what she was referring in her song Secret ) so following that rule; she was emotionally invested in achieving that role, which is why you see her in the video rocking the fishnet veil and looking all bossed up. She was emulating the Evita persona and the struggles that Evita went through. As a matter of fact; she send Allen Parker a copy of the video for Take A Bow in order to convince him that no one could play Evita but her. That whole era was brilliant

***RBS's 'VISIONS OF MADONNA TIME!*** ...say goodbye!? ...not on your LIFE.... (0:27) - ...well, I must admit, Empresses' excitement over this THIRTY YEAR OLD(!) Video gave me quite the chuckle! (1:02) (2:31) ..'veal', ...ha-HAA!! - ...MY take on the Video, is that Madonna (and the Bull) are in preparation of the 'Bullfighter'; to see who will win, in the Game of Love, and POWER.....Madonna's character is a "Evita" type, who wants the Bullfighter's Love, but knows he may 'conquer' her..... - ...The Bullfighter 'loves' *NO ONE* .....because he doesn't give in to 'Power'; The day of the Big Fight, intertwines with the 'conquest' of Madonna.....and she knows, if he WINS.....she LOSES...... (5:44) - ....My Best Friend worked at Tower Records (in NYC) ,and this showed on their Video screens for MONTHS! ...I'm only watching it again for Empress...and JOAN COLLINS! (2:45) ...ha-HAA!

I understand what you're saying. "Take A Bow" marked a significant change in Madonna's persona. It felt like the livelier, animated, button-pushing pop star Madonna from the 80s and early 90s, who courted the youth market, was pretty much gone. With this song, she appeared more cosmopolitan, urbane, and mellow. At this point, it seemed like she could've transitioned away from music to film...or started making adult-oriented music for the 25+ crowd if she wanted to stay in the music industry. Personally, I loved it. 1989 through 1993/4 was a cyclone of OTT salaciousness that became tiresome. I was ready for some calm serenity, and she delivered it. Although she still had some more typical 'Madonna' moments here and there, overall she exuded tranquility.

Great reaction, Empress! I knew you'd love it. As to your getting the sense of Madonna entering a new era, I'd say she's been wanting to be taken more seriously as an actress. In fact, she actually sent this video to Alan Parker with a passionate letter saying why she must play Eva Peron. So, that more adult, tragic, romantic and period feel all fits that next move.... But as to the video, what I love most is how smartly and expertly they take the theme right from the lyrics of the performance aspect of romance - especially as her lover here is playing a role and the real man is not what she had hoped for. Watch it from the beginning with theatre in mind and you start to see visual after visual that is all about that motif. Even the veil (and all the shades lowering/raising and doors opening/closing) is super theatrical, the curtain on a performance. The way both she and her amour are getting dressed for their entrance, the each masking up woven together - so seamlessly done. I could go on but needless to say, I feel like artistically, while not groundbreaking, is nonetheless perfection.

MTV and VH1 played this music video for months, multiple times a day and the radio stations would play it constantly December 1994 through March 1995. Take A Bow was #1 for 7 weeks at the top and stayed on the chart for 30 weeks, longevity on the charts. Rihanna had a song Take A Bow which went #1 in 2008. Madonna’s Take A Bow is classic.

Fun fact: The video was directed by Michael Haussman and was shot in spain. While she shot the video, she thinking about obtains the role of Eva Perron in Evita and this was the video she present to Alan Parker (the director of Evita) when she auditionned for this role and she obtains the role for this movie. The look, the image she adopted in the video, seduces enough Alan Parker to give for her the role and was what he search for ''Evita''. And another fun fact: Justin Timberlake told to this was his favorite Madonna video and this is the reason why he wanted to work with Michael Haussman when Justin ask to Michael to directed the video of ''SexyBack''. My first thoughts seeing it - the video was very lush, she looked stunning in that Galliano ensemble, the scene with her in bed with the TV was very sexy and her running from the bullfighter with makeup smeared across her face and torn clothing was one of the few times she appears as a victim in one of her videos. There is a sequel on the horizon in your journey where that changes. If she had stopped performing after Vogue - she would forever have been relinquished to being an '80's pop star' whereas in the 1990's she the same amount of success, maybe not as many hit songs (due to spending more time on films/Evita and motherhood) but definitely some memorable mega hits - as this was her longest charting #1 song and a string of #1 dance club songs from much better remixes. Btw, there is a VH1 commercial at the time that Madonna is in and includes the video - you might want to include that in a future video about the era.

As others had pointed out in the comments, this video served as an audition for Evita. I see you mention "Ava Gardner" tease on the header for this reaction video, but if you want to cite a classic movie star, Lana Turner would be more appropriate, not only because Turner was blonde, but also Eva Peron herself was inspired by Lana Turner's looks in those 40s MGM star vehicles for Lana and adapted Lana's look in her own style.

According to Billboard, this is her 3rd biggest hit only behind Like A Virgin and Crazy For You, counting overall chart performance. But outside the US, I think there are biggest hits. Also there are songs that aged better like La Isla Bonita, being her most viewed song on KZbin.

“Goodbye to pop star Madonna” This period is clean break from 80’s Madonna. Didn’t have to release any music after Vogue she still would’ve been queen of pop. I’m agreeing with all these takes yes!!!!

She looks so beautiful in the scenes in bed with the TV. Great video, hate bullfighting though.

I know this is so off topic but I gotta ask Empress where Are you? I need a reaction to kylie minogue joining madonna on stage singing at her concert. They broke the internet.

Great reaction as always Empress! I must admit “Take a Bow” has always been one of my least favorite Madonna hits. 🫣But seeing your reaction to the song and video has made me appreciate it more! 🤗

The sexy “rollin in the sheets” part is a bit out of place. lol. But it is such a precursor to how pop stars look-and act- now

The only thing that really sticks out (in the wrong way) in this video is the shoes. Those clumpy shoes were trendy in the 90s. Obviously the whole thing isn't really period (they didn't have TV sets in the 40s), but it's still the shoes that look incongruous to me.

The first time I saw this was the premiere on MTV when they aired an entire interview special on the set of the video in Spain (which I hope you will watch/react to!). It premiered a couple of days before Thanksgiving and I remember they re-aired the special on Thanksgiving Day and I was sitting on the floor a few feet away from the TV watching in the living room while everyone was at the dinner table eating! Anyway, I would call this a "B" Madonna video. Not among her Top 10 or anything like that but really beautiful and proof that even her lesser videos in the 80s and 90s were setting the bar HIGH. I love how it starts with her watching him on TV and ends with him watching her video singing about their affair. This is the "worst" video of the era IMO, which is saying a lot since it's obviously iconic. The last two videos from this era are 🔥!
