I recall watching an interview on Canada AM shortly after the MTV Awards a few days after. During the interview, they inquired about her performance at the MTV Awards, to which she responded, "My main focus was to go out there and simply enjoy myself by dancing energetically. Singing wasn't my priority; I just wanted to have fun and be full of energy." She mentioned that it was impossible for her to sing "Ray of Light," dance, move around, and be energetic simultaneously, so she had to decide which aspect to prioritize.

At long last justice for ROL@VMA’s!! So, so cool to see this! The story I had read years ago, and only saw once, was that she over rehearsed this, strained her voice and lost the vocal strength to land the performance. As always, people having the stupidest idea about Madonna. It seems that to them, Madonna could not ever do a single thing, not singing, not writing songs, not producing songs, not dancing, nothing at all. And when they saw SOMETHING that she did, suddenly they are shocked that oh she actually has some CAPABILITIES because quelle surprise she has been in the music business for 40 years. 🙄Never happened with any other artists. It's like Madonna is required to be able to lift a mountain so that people can finally acknowledge the fact that she has working limbs, while anyone else who does far less remarkable things is being praised as if they have walked on Mars.

I don't think she has in-ear monitors for this performance. I can't see them during ROL and there's no visible battery pack/cords down her back. She started using them in 2000/2001. So she probably has front speakers - problems with that, plus the loud audience, meant she started off-key and never really recovered (during the actual live broadcast). Shame, because I think she sounds really good here.

It definitely wasn’t nerves. She sang "Shanti/Ashtangi" on pitch for the live VMA broadcast …She clearly couldn’t herself in her monitor when the additional instruments were added to the mix for “Ray Of Light” She even calls out that she can’t hear herself at 5:30 mark in this rehearsal clip. When a vocalist can not hear the sound of their voice in their monitor they go off pitch and over-sing.

The live performance wasn't her best.. her voice was unstable and weak and I could barely listen to it without cringing. However, here she demonstrates an ability to hold a sturdy note especially in shanty which was spectacular, but again in ray of light, which is a very hard song to sing live with moving around, the struggle is apparent. She should've used the same technics she did on oprah. Thank you for this rare footage!!
