This song is a nightmare to sing not only from a notes perspective but also breathing technique. Sing it yourself and see. I respect her for doing it live. It would be easy to want to do this one pre-recorded.

She's just trying too hard to sing here, and her breathing is atrocious, this song isn't any harder to sing than any of her other ballads. She can do the softer higher pitched stuff but she tends to fallback on this kind of sound for some reason. I also don't get the way she kept singing the "er" sounds during this era "do you want to go highERRR" it just sounded really weird.

@earlusmcdivett, I have to agree... this song is very difficult to sing. Actually most of her songs from the ROL album are considered very hard to sing, especially Ray of Light. I tried to sing it a few times and breath control is the key to make it work. The range is also quite wide as well. Madonna has a 4 octave range which is quite wide for a pop singer to have. That's why most people have a hard time finding her keys while singing karaoke cause of her wide range.

She can sing the higher softer notes when she wants to but she generally just falls back into the deeper sound because it's easier for her I'm sure. None of the songs on Ray of Light are harder to sing than any other. The fact is during this performance she never hit the right note once and she was standing still, there is no reason for her to not have control of her breathing.

@@clojap Madonna is not known for her vocal capabilities but she does have a wide range at 4 octaves to be exact. After she got her intensive vocal coaching for her award wining role in "Evita", Madonna said she discovered a new vocal register she didn't know she had before. Also, for regular karaoke singers, we all know it is very hard to find Madonna's keys due to her wider range. Try singing "Live to Tell" or "Take A Bow", they are all over the place in terms of range. Even great singer like Julie Andrews and Idina Menzel only have 2 octaves.

I know.. this was just the first rehearsal, we're not expecting it to be perfect but yet she did an amazing job. She even did a few sound checks during the performance 0:31 . The final aired version was even more perfect than this version.

I wish she'd sing it well just once, she used this style every time she sang it and it's terrible. She's running out of breath doing nothing and she is pushing too hard instead of singing softly like the real song. That "do you want to go higheRRR" sounds terrible too lol. I remember at the time people asked her if her voice ever challenged her. And she almost couldn't answer. I think she has a wonderful voice, but the status quo tried to make her think she couldn't sing. She's a very good singer, it's just that the pressure is so high. And also, that was the era of early Celine Dions and Mariah Careys and such. Must have been hard for her. She had to find a specially good emotion to her singing. Which is really the most important thing.

She also didn’t step on the scene as a singer. She did it for money and ended up loving it. Her voice is so unique that it stands out. It has imperfections you won’t find in someone like Beyoncé or lady Gaga.. kinda reminds me of JLo but better and more groundbreaking because JLo stepped on the scene as a dancer as well.

Wow she's mostly on key here. This is probably the best version of this song live from her. She's challenged with technique singing this and limiting herself not to use that much head voice when she shouldn't be.
