Also, the income gets split between the service, the artist and if they aren't independent, the record label that they're signed to gets a percentage of the income as well

Today people generally buy albums as well WHEN the albums in question are GOOD! Have you ever heard of Adele? Now compare Adele's music and lyrics to Lady Gaga's, there's an abyss. I could not tell you if Adele's lyrics are as deep as you say, but I can assure you that Gaga's songs are not "cheap and mediocre", I don't know why you chose to say that. Not to take anything away from this, but it's not easy to just compare album sales that are two decades apart from each other. Record sales in general are nothing like they were in the past. It's pretty much a whole different ball game due to the internet and advanced technology making bootlegging (Illegal downloads) an easier thing to do, which affects record sales (Duh!). Madonna had less chance of having her album leaked if it could be at all back in the day. Gaga's had so much shit leaked it's royally screwed her one too many times. And Gaga is the true artist. Madonna has always just been an entertainer that knows how to market herself really fucking good.

Digital is the main medium of distribution today and sales today don’t even come close to physical sales say 30 years ago. Just one example: biggest selling album of the 2010’s is Adele’s 21 at around 5million sales. MJ’s Thriller at 47 million since 83/84, at a time when you couldn’t just download music onto ur phone. Madonna doesn’t even sell well today today, hence why she - along with nearly every artist today - tour more than they release new music.

J.M K Adele’s albums are closer to 30 million Madonna dosent sell well these days because her music isn’t as good and she doesn’t get played on radio because of her age etc so not much exposure. People use to record music straight from they radio onto cassettes so there was always illegal downloads. From the mid nighties you could download mp3s illegally. Napster was huge and allowed music to be downloaded for free during this period Madonna sold 17 million for ray of light and 10 million for music, confessions sold 12. Also hung up was released during the crossover in digital sales and most of its sales were not counted but it still sold buckets loads. After this her sales declined but it’s mainly from not being as good and not get played on airwaves. That said gaga soundtrack album seems to be selling well and I think will be a huge seller as will a greatesthits album if she releases one. Let’s be real.
