I think it was in an interview with Colbert where she said it was her idea to point to the flag. And in rehearsals there was a flag somewhere she could gesture to without spinning in a circle 😂 But the moved it! So she started the line and just thought "keep turning girl" and there it was. I am an older American to whom "Lady Gaga" was merely a name. (I had actually thought she might be a drag performer.) So I had no idea what to expect. Her performance so moved me. Somehow she managed to palpably display both the pride of a queen as well as the humility of one so honored to be asked to perform on this special occasion. As for the anthem, she made it better than it actually is musically. Her embellishments of the phrases were remarkably, but appropriately, restrained as if to say "I know that this performance is not about me."
