I'm afraid Madonna and her usual posse should get little credit for the sound of Ray of Light. William Orbit, the genius behind the modern trip-hop / groove-chill sounds should get most of the credit. His solo work is bonkers as well. He blends synth with piano, guitar and real strings for a truly unique and authentic sound. And the louder the better. As I have read from several sources, Madonna was dragged kicking and screaming (almost literally) into the studio to record this album. She and Orbit did NOT get along, and she wanted all credit for the album. If you think this is a fluke, listen to U2's "Electrical Storm." DAMN. Then look up William Orbit's album series "Strange Cargo 1 through 4." :). Now you get it!

They do NOT relate at all! Honey, I do not think that Britney Spears was part (although executive) of the writing process of blackout. The musical catalogue was ready for her: she just had to choose and put her "vocals" on. I am not blaming her though given the tight control that smothered her creative side whose peak was rather visible in In the Zone of 2003. So, do not compare the incomparable, I suggest. Just KZbin or Google Madonna's interviews in 1998 and you will see how much she was involved. Even William Orbit, the mastermind of Ray of Light the album, said it himself that Madonna was totally immersed within the creative process.

Patrick Leonard was also involved in almost every song of the record, but in the case of "to have and not to hold", Marius DeVries shuold deserve some credit, this song as we know it have his full influence. To have and not to hold is a full bossa nova song because of him. He is english and all, but he made beautiful bossa songs for other artists as well, like this version of "Aganju" he made for Bebel Gilberto, you should look and see how similar that song is to "to have and not to hold".

The instrumental version is not on the album, but it doesn't matter buy it anyway. It's one of the greatest album ever made. The production behind each tracks is massive, the lyrics are beautiful ("To Have And Not To Hold" is a heartbreaker). "Ray of light" came out 20 years ago but who could tell ? trust me this album is out of time. Go Buy It ;)
