I think you should add the fact in the title that you're not just making the track louder, but also more dynamic. Saying you can make something sound louder doesn't say much, but making it loud AND dynamic are ultimately our goals as engineers, right? You teach extremely well, I'm just saying this so the snobs don't nitpick.

It is a creative process, some engineers use 3 or 4 plug ins on the master while others use 5 6 or more. The most important tools are your ears and reference tracking. Great work man!

Thank you very much for this really helpful video! I was wondering if you would make a video like this with using just the stock plugins of Protools? I imagine it would help a lot of people who don't have the additional plugs. If not I understand but I really appreciate this video! Also... how did you set an Input for your Master? When I create 2 master faders they only have an Output option.
@MadRezStudios
@MadRezStudios 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks man that’s a good call. Ill add that to my video schedule. As for the 2 master faders question.. I use a “Master Track” as my SUBMIX or mixbus fader where I do my mixbus processing and use an “AUX Track” for my final MASTER fader going out to the monitors. The AUX track is what give me INPUT/OUTPUT options. This is what I am explaining at 2:18 of the video.

Just insert a trip or level plugin on the very first slot of your master bus. This will allow you to bring down the level before it gets to your plugin processing chain.

so when you said 0 dB VU (with the first mix bus plugin), it was really like pinned at +3...and I'm always overthinking this whole process. I know there are no rules, but I was taught to mix low and leave headroom...so you're just turning down your mix -4 to give yourself that headroom, but there's still not much headroom?? I also get confused when it comes to to L3-LL multi...if you are leaving that output at -4.0, there's still room after that to pull it up again, but what if you were to set the output to -0.2? I need to just stand behind someone mastering in the studio once so I can ask like 4 questions haha

What stock/free/other 3rd party Plugin can i use instead of SSL Virtual Mixbuss?
@MadRezStudios
@MadRezStudios 4 жыл бұрын
There are a number of compressors that people use for Mix bus compression. The SSL is certainly one of the most popular for this style of music but you can get away with using similar settings on your stock compressor and see what results you get. The important thing is to understand WHY we are applying mix bus compression, not necessarily the HOW we do it. We just want to get the whole mix "glued" together a bit. You don't need much gain reduction to achieve this.

Youre right man! That was the one thing I would have liked to add to this video was a volume matched comparison. But also for the sake of this video, I was mainly trying to point out how to take a mix that is sounding good and get it loud and still dynamic. So I did want to show off the loudness difference because I was getting requests specifically on loudness. I will be sure to be mindful of this for future A/B comparisons 🤙🏼
