Finally returning to this series after 7 months! No reason for the absence - just lots of other stuff I've wanted to make I guess. I thought this was appropriate though since the re-release is now out. Will try to cover 1.1-1.12 fully before phase 6/naxxramas releases. If you'd like to see the previous episodes, I have a playlist in the description.

Minor detail but the Runescape screenshot at 1:27 is from the re-release of OldSchool Runscape, which is essentially Runescape's route which would be similar to Classic+ if that ever happens. Items in the screenshot such as tentacle whip, infernal cape, and torture amulet didnt exist in the original release of Runescape.

I loved the Dwarven ability to find treasure. At the beginning of WoW, there were hidden treasure chests all throughout the world and Dwarves could detect the treasures. Then people complained that it was unfair that Dwarves got the free loot and Blizzard removed both.

I like how you tackle the changes/advancement in fundamental MMO play that make the early release different from the classic release, in a nostalgic but nonjudgmental manner. This is a solid analysis of how the experience is fundamentally different, even when playing the same early version of a game.

On the note about paladin seals, KJ mentioned in future interviews/streams a few core ideas that they wanted the paladin to follow. 1) they were supposed to be tactical and think about their next moves. Can' have distinct choices between healing/casting/melee if your main DPS abiltiy is a short CD instant attack. 2) he wanted their seal and judge system to carry the class. He admitted it was shipped half cooked. No expansion after vanilla would relook at the system since they would add CS back to the kit instead of adding more interactions to cause dmg through seals/judges. 3) hpal's invites to raids was a major reason the class as a whole didnt get the class fantasy updates it needed. KJ mentioned that Hpal sitting inthe back casting fol was very far from the idea of what they saw a paladin doing. But because it was being invited to raids, and people more flexible who they brought to dungeons, he was forced to look at other specs/classes that werent being invited to stuff. But he wanted hpal to be a melee healer that swings their hammer.

I remember playing with/against lots of paladins in vanilla beta, and I think I liked the holy strike/crusader strike build better than the big overhaul with seals and judgement. Crusader strike was like sunder armor but it boosted holy damage, holy strike was like heroic strike but it did extra holy damage. It's pretty much just holy warrior, but that at least makes them do more than auto attack and wait for seal procs. Plus I think it would've made paladins better tanks in 5 mans at least.

What's funny is that the out-of-combat rez bug still exists in Classic; my party mostly wiped in that dwarf area in Hillsbrad, but because I hadn't interacted with anything yet, I was still able to rez the Warrior while the Shaman was fighting everything. It's a fun feeling when that happens.

Depends what you expect. It's the most solid healer in the game (especially in pvp) and it's such a big fking meme with reckbombs (can 1 shot anyone) Blizzard had to forget about the ''no changes'' thing and nerf them in Classic. But ye, if you expected to be in the top of the dps meter or a consistent tank, then your expectations probably got fked up.

I am glad I experienced vanilla wow in 2006. Min maxing wasn't super popular like it is with classic wow now. People just want to rush rush rush now a days and that saddens me. Back in 2006 when I played my orc shaman, I had a guide I found online that told me where to go 1-60 every quest and location and recommended levels to go to next area, etc. I printed it from this website and it was almost an inch thick lol. I have been enjoying content that I didn't do back then though. In classic and I am doing it all!

I was playing Warcraft 3 then all of a sudden dad buys World of Warcraft for me Arathi Basin was my first new patch about a week or two after I started. And there went the next like 4 years of my life. Quit mid wrath because my guild for some reason replaced a purple deathknight with a green shaman for Ulduar. Snagged the Time-Lost Protodrake then logged off until my account somehow got hijacked in the grand tournament patches(during inactive so they had to pay $15 to steal my stuff) and a bunch of my stuff went missing. Restored it with a GM ticket which included a large sum of gold in the mail which tripped the buying gold autobanner. I left my account banned all the way up until WoW Classic released, because hackers can't hijack a banned account. All I had to do to appeal it was remind them that a gm-restore triggered a goldbuyer protocol from the mailbox. Took me about 9 days and 11 hours of ingame time to get to 60. My molten core run in classic was quite something. We had tabs on one or two other raids that were wiping to bosses, while our raid was blazing through it no problem. We had a discord raid channel for communication and DBM and all that. Positioning and proper boss strats. Garr gave us the most trouble until we decided all warlock are on 100% banish duty and nothing else, then we beat him. The kicker was by time we defeated Executor, which gave us the 2nd most trouble after Garr, we wanted to douse all the runes to summon Ragnaros. The issue was, only one person unlocked the water, so they had to make a run all the way to eastern Azshara to buy more water, one at a time. So since we had enough warlocks (i was one of them) we decided to have a group with one warlock run with them to Azshara. One group standing outside the raid to summon waterguy back to Molten Core, and a defense squad to protect me from PvP Server shenanigans (also soul drain some more shards since I wasn't using a soul bag). And a third warlock inside the raid instance to quick-summon to each rune. Surprisingly, everyone in the raid stuck around for the like 30-60 minutes that took. Sadly we didn't beat Rag, we got close, healer mana could keep up and we didn't have enough DPS to 1-phase it. They got it the next day, however.

Horde didn't outnumber Alliance at all on release. As a matter of fact, Alliance vastly outnumbered horde to the point that Blizzard added high level guards to horde zones. It still is in effect today. Tarren Mill guards are lvl 55, Southshore guards are 35.

Everyone always mentions everquest or Lineage etc as biggest mmo's of the time, but no one ever mentions Legend of Mir, which as far as i can tell had much bigger registered users/ subscription numbers than those games combined, and at its peak had 750k players online, which is much higher than 550k from Everquest. I spose Everquest was more popular in West which means, "bigger games" that wasnt so popular in west, get's pushed to side, or gets forgotten about. p.s. awsome vid pal. :)
