This is song is dedicated to a friend called Graham Burns .he asked if he could stop at mine for a few days in 83 I was 14 he was only 15 as his family just left one day and left him behind (shocking) he didn’t leave until 6 months later when he was old enough to get his own place . He was my bed and breakfast man

@@deanrussell2224 I certainly do he moved away from the village(couldn’t bring himself to stay after what happened ) got himself a flat and a job found himself a girlfriend now he’s happily married with 5 kids and a few grandkids but because we stood by him when his family deserted him he named his first 2 sons after me and my brother .Graham Burns is a legend and will always be my bed and breakfast man.❤️

This is one of my favourite Madness songs. Often overlooked, I think the saxophone playing by Lee Thompson really makes this track special, it sets the tone and rhythm for the mood of the song.

it's my favourite...... the sax playing is phenomenal, but the entire track, the organ, and even the vocal timing, everything absolutely nailed down to the point where I think this should be their most famous work..... instead of our house/baggy trousers etc

I was in London a few years back with my GF and her North Londoner med school friend who was playing tour guide and took us by the childhood home of the Davies brothers (The Kinks are my all-time faves), She mentioned that North London had produced more than its share of great music and asked 'You've heard of Madness?" Whereupon I did the ska long step (or whatever it's called), deepened my voice and intoned "One step beyonnnnnd". She damn near fell over laughing, and then took us by several of the Madness homes. Some of us Yanks did get the memo on these guys, too few sad to say. That green box set with the booklet and all the videos has got to be one of the greatest collections ever. Any time I need a good laugh, I check out used car salesman Suggs or flying Lee.

Here’s a true story for you William. I was out with Lee (Thompson) and some others on our scooters (Lambretta’s, Vespa’s ) a year or so ago. We stopped on our way back at a Tesco’s on the north circ near Finchley. We are topping up with juice while Lee goes into Tesco’s to buy a sandwich. While he’s in there he bumps into Ray Davies doing a shop! It was so bloody random and nobody batted an eyelid…

There was very little on the first LP that wasn't single material, this being no exception. 'Bed & Breakfast Man' was slated to be the first Stiff 7" after their debut Two-Tone offering, but Dave Robinson wisely put out an elongated rough mix of 'One Step Beyond' under everyone's noses instead. The rest as they say, was history.

oh, be fair. There's always great music being made and although this is brilliant, it's not the end of the wonderful. It's just a different kind-of great, is all.

If there was a TV show about a bed and breakfast man (who is a superhero) that song would fit the intro and it will be something for everyone to see on Netflix.
