"This is a Musical Festival" - said The legend, Musical Maestro, Padmabhushan Ilaiyaraaja in one occasion, though he never speaks much about himself or his music to the nearly 10000 cheering audience in HP Pavilion, San Jose, California, on Friday, 1st March 2013 when he gave a non-stop musical performance from 7.30pm to 12 midnight.
The program started with Guru Brahma Guru Vishnu slokam and then Maestro dressed in traditional Dhovatti & Kanduva entered the stage amid thunderous applause by all the audience and started with wonderful song from "Thai Mookambikai"- the evergreen "Janani Janani". Maestro delivered the song in a commendable way.
For music lovers drawn from both Tamil & Telugu community in and around Bay Area, it is a feast to the eyes and ears as they could see all their favorite music celebrities at one go..namely S.P.Bala Subrarahmanyam, K.S.Chitra, Hariharan, Mano, Karthik, Yuvan Shankar Raja, Bhavatharini, Geetha Madhuri, Priya, Anita, Ramya, Priya Darshini, and above all the Music Maestro Ilaiyaraaja.
Ilaiyaraaja sir said that music is more than temple and people with their love for music shall not kindle it, someone in the auditorium rightly said that only Ilaiyaraaja is named as Maestro because he considers music as more than temple.

How does Illayaraja compose such masterpieces? I am amazed at How one person can conceive and bring together so many musical instruments? And he is from an early generation . He requires a simple harmonica to conceptualize and then brings other instuments at the right place and time !. Without all the fuss new age musicians create these days over mixing , signal processing etc , right from 70's this man has been entertaining tamil audiences with absolute innumerable melodies. He is unparalleled and is gifted soul... Mediums have been changing Radio, cassette, CD, DVD, MP3,cloud etc but I only prefer his songs in all as it touches the soul ! Hats off to Illayaraja sir.! Isaiyil Thodanguthamma’ is based on Hamsanadam.But it has flavours of Saranga Tharangini, Shudh Sarang and to a certain extent Yaman Kalyan as well. Hamsanadam is again a very interesting Raga and as per the older Raga texts this Raga is derived from the 60th Melakartha Neethimathi having six Swaras in the ascent and descent.But over a period of time it became a pentatonic Raga with just 5 Swaras.. ‘Isaiyil Thodanguthamma’ is yet another proof of Raja’s iguana like grip on Laya(rhythm). It is set to the 7 beat Mishram. In the prelude and the interludes, the pattern is played in a fast pace(called as ‘Mel Kaalam’) and here the Master divides the 14(7x2) as ThaKaDhiMi ThaKa ThaKaDhiMi ThaKaDhiMi that is 4 2 4 4.. In the vocal part, it is played as 3 4- ThaKiTa ThaKaDhiMi.

Some of you people have no idea on what is live singing like.. Ofcoz hari ji didn't didn't do justice like the original singer.. But this is every difficult song to do live. With the sangathis and stuff.. But hari ji manage to pull it thru. Definitely not flawless but he made justice..

Suren D, This is not a reality show contestant. This is Hari Haran. So, expectations were high. All we are saying is he did not do any justice to the beauty of this song. It need not sound like original, Hariji need not imitate and give 100% output as Pandit Ajoy Chakrabarty. BUT the flavor and the nuances of the song need to be intact for the listener. And Hariji butchered it!
