This violin has been sitting for too long. The neck came of the body and needs to be glued in place again.

I just wanted to say I really appreciate your videos. I have learned a lot from you in my journey to attempt to make a violin and your persona is welcoming and warm which makes your videos better than most. Your talent and techniques are top notch and your explanations on each step are valuable. One thing I am curious about on violin necks: is there any treatment/coating on the playing area? I cannot tell if it's bare wood or if some sort protection is applied.

Thank you so much for your kind words! I really appreciate it! On the neck I put a coating of cooked linseed oil. On new instruments or whene the wood is very clear color I also put some stain.

I love watching your videos! I was wondering if you could make a video on a violin soundpost patch. Like when to use one and when not to. In my case, the crack is really close to the bridge foot as well as where the soundpost goes. I'm not sure if it's even possible to fix it. I saw the one you did on a cello but it would be great to see how you do it on a violin. Thanks for making videos for us to learn! :)

Hello Jonathan, If the crack passes over the soundpost or 5mm left or right of it the you should place a patch (if the instrument is woth it). The procedure is the same for top and back, violin or cello so you can follow my video.

@@maestrokimon Thank you so much! That helps a lot. For now, I'm mostly fixing violins to learn but I've always wondered how to tell if a violin is worth fixing or not. Or the quality of the instrument. Are there certain things to look for in a quality instrument when it's broken? Thanks again for your help! 😀

If it's white glue, you use heat to remove the finger board. I use alcohol to remove a finger board glued with hide glue. It works great.

Another example where white glue shouldn't have been used. 😉 Did you clean the old glue out of the neck mortise? Sometimes I have found a thick amount of glue there because of poor fitting & end up chiselling it out to a clean flat face & grafting some new spruce in (easier than replacing the neck block if the top doesn't need to come off) then going through the process of fitting the neck again so it is correctly aligned, as well as being correctly glued.

Hi Maestro Kimon Thank you for all your information about your professional works especially the violin. Just asking why it's not allowed to use rosewood pegs for the violin? Best regards Ali
@maestrokimon

Rosewood is a protected species and its trade is restricted. It's not forbiden but needs extra paperwork.

Hello, thanks for the helpful advice. I would like to ask, I have a 200 year old Hopf violin, it has a dent in the body of the violin, where the legs of the bridge are, which causes the contact with the bridge to be imperfect. How to solve the problem of the dent. Thank you again.

Excellent video Kimon! It covers several different operations in the same video. Just a couple of questions regarding some of the tools you are using, if you please. First, the clamp you are using to hold the pegs as you turn them on the shaper. I would like to obtain one of these. Can it be purchased or did you make it yourself? Secondly, I believe you had a previous video that showed how to construct the device that you use to hold the bridge in place as you file it. Can you please direct me to that video? That would be much appreciated!

Is there a glue that you recommend for reattaching the neck to the body? It's literally the only repair my violin needs, and it's been sitting dormant for a few years like this

You have to use hot hide glue.

Great video, Looking at that neck mortise it seems like it had been repaired before? (Though rather poorly). Would it not have been necessary to fit some new spruce into the top block and then re cut a good fitting mortise or would that simply not have been economical on this instrument?
@maestrokimon
@maestrokimon 2 жыл бұрын
The most important parts are the fit between the neck and the back plate and that the neck wedges well into the block. These where both tight fits so I didn't need to do anything.
