My favourite thing about this game is the map. It’s so beautifully detailed and really makes you feel like you’ve gone back in time to 1968 Louisiana. That combined with the extensive list of accessible interiors and the incredible soundtrack really do help outweigh the somewhat repetitive gameplay to unlock story missions, at least in my opinion.

I tend to agree. This is especially sad since there's real quality mixed with too much repetition. I think this could have been much more than Mafia 1 and 2 if they'd cut it down to the better and more unique parts. For example I really like Donavan (I mean as a video game character, haha. Wouldn't invite him to my birthday party) or the cult mission.

I liked the game recently but playing it as a non Mafia series game cause to me it's not a Mafia game at all, Mafia 3 should have been a new IP and reserve Mafia 3 for a proper Mafia sucessor... Mafia 3 suffers from a bit of an identity crisis. The cutscenes still feel like a Mafia game (all be it one set in the 60s), but the gameplay feels more like GTA V. I think the problem is that GTA V was such a monster hit that Hanger 13 decided to make Mafia 3 play like a GTA V clone. I enjoyed it for what it was, just don't go into it thinking it's like the first two Mafia games. It's GTA Mafia style, with solid gunplay and a killer soundtrack.

When the old country comes out, I'm going to play through all of them on classic difficulty, simulation mode, and all that. But I've seen a couple posts about how to play through Mafia 3 so the story flows in a more chronological order while also giving tips to change up attacks on rackets to break the monotony of the repetitive objectives. With all the little dialogue bits between contacts, you can make it into a single narrative pretty well, consodering the whole story takes place over several months' time.

You know, Red Dead Redemption 2's story took a lot of inspiration from GTA 5 (Main group of characters having trouble with the law while carrying out professional robberies and angering many powerful factions, gangs and businessmen and powerful gangsters among them) and it was a beloved entry and a massive hit, and people love it. Mafia 3 takes inspiration from many of the GTA games, GTA 5 among them. Lincoln is the right combination between Michael, Franklin and Trevor, and his special abilities reflect that. His criminal empire wasn't well-explored, you don't get the feeling of creating a new crime family, but I do feel like Lincoln did become a mob boss in his own right and his authority as leader is unquestionable, making him the boss of Burke, Vito and Cassandra. Mafia 3 heavily focuses on the Mafia, and Lincoln himself was Italian. It's a flawed game, but it's revenge story is well-written and one of the best betrayals in gaming from how the scene goes from 0 to 100 with a blink of an eye. It's not perfect, neither were the others, and neither was GTA 5.

​@@B0X666 This, all day. What I do now is give 2 rackets to different bosses and then the whole district to the third. I cycle them, so nobody turns on me. Plus, I get all the weapons for free instead of paying x amount per weapon change. Infinite change ups. I love taking the M60 with the full combat gear into the bayou like Lincoln is reliving 'Nam. Or just walking slowly up to the small groups of 3 enemies in full trenchcoat with the Tommy.

I honestly just use Mafia 3 as a walking simulator. Just being able to wonder about this time period of America and see all the little details and areas is a joy to go back to for me. I also think it's got a great variety of locations in the city and outside . I only brought the DLC so I could have more areas to explore. I am one of those gamers that sometimes buys games just for the setting and although I do enjoy the combat and can tolerate it more than most others, Mafia 3 next to Mafia definitive for me are just beautiful but gritty worlds to be in and take my time to admire. I hope we get more games with time periods like this and not just in the US, I would be really interested in seeing a gangster game set in the UK during the 60s just for the vibes alone.

Man, I just finished the game for the first time, and I gotta admit, it is my favorite of the franchise. I mean Mafia 1 has the best story, but I just loved the characters on mafia 3, and the whole revenge plot. Also, the gunplay is so perfect. Inspite of the bugs and a few times I got pissed off cuz I had to reload the save and do a side mission again, It never felt boring for me. It was repetitive, sometimes it got me real pissed with bugs, but the same sistem of taking down rackets and burroughs was kinda addictive too

Yes. I got it first week of its release. Loved it. The game really opens up when dlc becomes available. You can do dlcs in whatever order you want. But I highly recommend starting “sign of the times” dlc first. It gives a reason to save /spend money. “Faster baby” expands the map and Donovan’s dlc gives you the m16. On top of the base game, you got so much to do. The soundtrack is the cherry on top.

@ true. Although, once dlc it’s unlocked on the first sit down, you can do stoned unturned dlc and leave that dlc with the m16. You still have it As long as you don’t switch it for anything else. You still have to do stuff for Burke before getting a hold of the m16. You can’t do it before the first sit down/ dlc unlocked. It’s after. So it’s faster to the dlc and use it than it is doing favors for Burke.

I’m currently playing the definitive edition on ps5 …it still has tons of bugs the most annoying being I’ll get frozen after I take over a district and have to quit out and start the game over the driving and sun glare have been tremendously fixed .

Although it has some fair criticisms that can be pointed out, this really IS a gem of a game. To be fair, it came out in 2016 and there are definitely signs of the time that it was released in, and really indicated what a sandbox game was nearly a decade ago. Beautiful environment. I love the twist of you being the boss, although with that knowledge, it makes it sort of annoying when your underbosses are telling you what to do and give you missions lol. But this game has a certain tedium and repetitiveness to it. FAST TRAVEL: This game could have benefitted from a good fast travel feature. You dont have to fast travel me to the front of my next mission. You can fast travel me to a safe house there. If I want to go to Ticfaw Harbor from Frisco Fields, I dont feel like driving the full distance every time. Especially the further you get into the game. But if you can fast travel me to Frisco Fields to a safe house, driving to the next mission from within the district where I need to be is helpful. MISSION FORMATS: Every single time: Find a snitch, interrogate, bust up rackets, and snag the boss. That could have benefited from being formatted in different ways from time to time. This game could have benefitted from the occasional FUN racket busting. Kinda like the way that Spider Man has those fun missions where you're rescuing people from a destroyed Bridge, or chasing lizard through the city. it helps bust up the tedium from time to time. SIDE MISSIONS: Sometimes, it just not even worth it. If you do side missions, yea, there is a benefit and you rake in more money- but it's more hassle than its worth. For example: One of THREE things will happen. 1) If you're getting the weed boats for Cassandra, then the boat gets "stuck on land" when you're in the water and you cant do anything. You can load the last starting point but the mission disappears. Bye Bye money. 2) You do the missions and as you approach the gates of where you drop off the vehicle or shipment of whatever, a hit squad appears and drops you. No matter how much armor, adrenaline, ammo you have. 3) The mission just might be glitched. Sure- show up and steal a truck... if it's there. Lots of little bugs. I GET the point of how much work it takes to take down a criminal organization, but this game could have benefited from a little more variety. Like when you catch one of the underbosses at a funeral. That was fun and different and you work as a waiter undercover... they could have done more oddball missions like that. Still a gem. But makes you work VERY hard for the payoff.

Unfortunately, I couldn't be objective with Mafia III. It was my first game for the PS4 since it came with the console as part of a bundle, and I’ve played it a lot because I’m really captivated by the era in which the game is set, so it’s a game that has resonated with me on a very personal level. However, I’m also very aware that, especially when it was first released, the game had a lot of issues, and it took a long time for those to be fixed. I’m also aware-and it’s something I don’t like-that in its day-to-day narrative, the game can be quite repetitive, often giving you the feeling of doing the same things over multiple sessions, progressing slowly. It’s also true that it came out in a tough period when, if I remember correctly, GTA V was also out, which Mafia III definitely couldn’t compete with. Nevertheless, I’ll say again that I hold a very special fondness for this game, as I’ve revisited it multiple times-maybe even too many times, haha. But for me, it’s a pleasure to wander through New Bordeaux, the Bayou, and Sinclair, and to relive a generally well-constructed story. That said, I also think this game breaks away from the Mafia series since it tells a story where the protagonist seeks revenge rather than actually trying to build something-in fact, quite the opposite. He’s out to destroy, to destroy everything, and in one of the endings we all know, he leaves it all behind. That’s why-and referring to that ending we’re all familiar with and that most of us appreciate, where Vito takes over the city-I think it would have been interesting if they had released at least a DLC, if not a full game, where it tells the story of how Vito took control of the entire city, either through other characters or other narratives. That way, the ending could have felt more in line with Mafia’s theme of building-of constructing a criminal empire of one’s own. Ultimately, it's a game I hold very close to my heart, one I have fond memories of and enjoy revisiting from time to time, because it always touches a special part of me. It makes me think about the many possibilities that Lincoln's story could have offered, that Vito's story could have offered, and about how things sometimes turn out.

Your points are valid! However i loved it! Maybe not so good as Mafia 1,2, but it's a very good game with great story, characters, graphics, shooting, combat, driving, soundtrack etc. Mafia 3 starts great with the intro chapter, then its ok and after awhile becomes boring when you realize that many missions are repetitive and feel like filler. Then the end is amazing and the DLCs are great. No filler missions on DLCs and even some optional fun side missions there 😅. My version didn't automatically downloaded the DLCs, so i played them after i finished the main game. So, my advice to new people to the game to "break" this game's repetitive nature of missions is: Play first the intro and then repetitive missions until you unlock the DLCs, then the first dlc, then repetitive missions, then second dlc, repetitive missions third dlc, last remaining missions and then the end and i think this should have been the order that the developers should set so that game feels better not boring at all and have more fun with it.

So, I'm currently revisiting all 3 games ti seek the platinum trophy for each. I'll follow this up when I have finished the second one as I have the first. I much preferred the controls on the first game. You can't shoot and drive in the second. Massive differences for me were the controls, and the implementation of the "skip" to drive option. My experience and recommendation: first just don't expect a typical mafia style game. Play it as ist is, don't put on your Mafia glasses and it is a good game. Second: Timing of DLC is key. Play after every won district (with a sit-down afterwards) one dlc (best order is probably "faster baby", "Sign of the times" and then "stones unturned"). Not only does it give you some story variety, it also adds some fun mechanics afterwards. I think I wouldn't have finished the game without the dlcs but they really turn this game into a good one. Lastly: if it is starting to feel to repetitive just use Vitos men to clean the buildings. Now much fun!

For me, Mafia 3 has: The best soundtrack, the best visuals,the best cast, the best driving system, the best combat system and the best plot. However, it all falls apart at the repetitiveness of the game. I had to to basically grind hours upon hours of repetitive gameplay just so I can reach important points in the story and get the plot rolling again. If I were taking this game casually, I'd be bored of it at around the 20 hour mark and even that is generous

I liked the game. I played it on PS4 when the DLC was already out. The base game had a pretty repetitive gameplay loop of conquering various areas of the city, so I used the DLC to "break up" the monotony. It really helped. In hindsight I would give Mafia 3 a 7.5 out of 10.

Recently replayed the first and second (my fav) instalment of the franchise, so I thought to give the third one another shot too. I mean it’s ok-ish… the repetitive parts are annoying and kill some joy, but I still feel to go on and play it anyway. I finished Mafia 3 the definitive addition for the first time last week. I didn't play the game for the story or the mechanics. I merely played it to pass time and the time that I spent playing it I enjoyed. The time period its set in and Hangar 13 not holding back on the racial tensions was a cherry ontop. I felt sorry for the character when the undermined him and I felt the joy of destroying his enemies because of it (I needed any excuse to unalive someone). Very unpopular opinion but it gets a thumbs up from me

I really tried with this game honestly I did, to repetitive. It’s still a nice game tho but just extremely difficult to get through at the half way point. I just watched the whole story plot online and now it makes sense

Im a fan of this franchise and even though the criticism of this game is valid, there was enough good to overshadow the bad for me. You can get this game for less than 10€ these days and i think you receive a lot of game for that money.

I think Vito should’ve had a better role but also making him and joe reunite at the end, it would’ve made a better closure to mafia 2, even a dlc would’ve been good to have it.

Great Game great, sound track and just loads of fun.. just finished the 1st remake and starting 2 , then I'll replay Mafia III. as far as missions, ALL MAFIA MISSIONS I II III, are the same. run duck shoot collect... enjoying and enjoyed ever minute of game play. PEACE PLAYERS!

I haven't played the Definitive Edition yet, but I have played Mafia 2 and 3 and found the lack of things to do outside of the missions disappointing, money was basically useless since the only way to spend it was on weapons that you could mostly pick up from the enemies you killed. The story in part 3 was a lot better along with the much bigger map, but found it repetitive much like The Godfather game where it was formulaic to kill all the enemies and take over the rackets. If they make a part 4 I'd love to see them have more property or businesses to spend money on and not make the NPCs so hapless and easy to lure away 1 at a time easily disposed of.
