This meant that no matter how crappy my boss was to me, I had to bite my lip and try and find a new job while I was being asked to work 70-80 hours a week so that I could stay in the country. Why did you resign without planning on selling your furniture or speaking to your landlord about the lease on your apartment? "Plan to leave without telling my employer'' Wouldn't handing in a resignation letter count as telling your employer? Also, my BF is here on HB-1 status and it clearly states that if you leave the job you immigrated for it's under the governments discretion to deport you immediately. You broke a contract with clear rules. It sucks they only gave you 24 hours but it's your own fault. Also, how did your employer get all the paper work done for your resignation, call DHS, and then DHS did their own paperwork, which was surely backlogged. So they moved your case to the top of the pile, assigned agents to your case who did all the official paperwork and made a determination on your status all within 24 hours of a resignation?

I was laid off some months ago from my software engineer job. I worked for a massive corporation who hint: just struck a $10billion deal with the US Government. After my work building the infrastructure for a new software pipeline was completed, my team and I were replaced by H1B visa workers from India, who had very little experience and whom we had to train before being laid off. I have 10 years of experience in my field and can barely get an interview in Silicon Valley. My situation is not rare - it is overwhelming in the tech sector. Let's be clear: this is about replacing skilled American citizens with people who corporations can pay 50% of the market rate, who can be more easily controlled out of fear of losing their visas, and who will not speak out on predatory working conditions due to this. This has zero to do with Indians as a culture, people I have grown up with and love as family, but it has everything to do with the reality of the situation.

As a laid off tech worker, it always annoys me that tech companies always push government for more work visas but literally there are tons of US citizens capable of filling those jobs, they just don’t want to hire us. There is a lot of nepotism in tech, and that makes it difficult for people that do not have friends/family to break into the industry. Edit: I worked within a small AI team with about 30 people where most of my coworkers were Iranian/Persian. They were all great people in my experience but the statistical odds of the entire Bay Area to have a team of a sharing culture is just too low for it to happen “naturally” in the job market. Many of them were PhD grads and scientists in fields that were not related to AI like physics and computer graphics, I think they really take care of their community but can seem unfair to an average American that can barely afford an education to get those jobs.

What Vivek doesn’t realize is that there are also downsides to that kind of “tiger mom” mentality. For instance, in South Korea the competition to get into a good school and get a good job at a big company like Samsung or Hyundai is insane. A lot of young people end up taking their own lives. They actually give a $5000 a year stipend for continuing education, because they profit more from more knowledgable employees. Why is this such a foreign concept to Eloy?

Because Elon is about making money, at the lowest cost possible, not building anything. Well, unless it’s a low res vanity project or spaceships to nowhere! @Godzillamonstrosity5 күн бұрын
Not really. There is a lack of technical talent among the US-born citizens as well. For some jobs, you cannot find people among US-born citizens who have the requisite qualifications. You have to bring people from overseas in those situations.
@missmytime5 күн бұрын
@@GodzillamonstrosityThis is patently false. Most H1-Bs are for entry-to-mid level positions which a) are not highly skilled by definition and b) American CS majors can fill in spades. Besides, tens of thousands of Americans are experiencing layoffs and/or unable to find work, including many highly experienced and highly skilled professionals. Many times, their companies decided to hire cheaper and more subservient labor in their stead. There IS no shortage of Americans with tech skills. This is a myth perpetrated by greedy corporate execs to justify hiring techies for up to a 1/3 less, and/or to get workers that will willingly work up to 80 hour weeks without complaint.
@Godzillamonstrosity5 күн бұрын
@@missmytime You are right that many of the H1B visas are for entry to mid positions in big tech companies which could be filled by American CS majors. Problem is that US is not producing enough CS majors every year to fill these positions. The Americans who get laid off with years of experience and qualifications are too expensive to hire and are overqualified for entry level software dev positions which is usually filled by employees in their mid to late twenties. You just cannot have a 45 year old American guy who was laid off recently with 20 years of experience in the field doing that job - he is way too old for that position, overqualified and too expensive to hire.
@missmytime5 күн бұрын
@@Godzillamonstrosity This idea that there aren’t enough entry level CS people to fill these jobs from the US is again, simply not true. Tens of thousands of recent, perfectly qualified CS grads are struggling to get jobs. I know some of those folks, they are as nerdy as they come. Those jobs are the most likely to be filled by H1Bs, and they are routinely filled by H1Bs. On the other end, the experienced professionals with 20+ YOE are the epitome of “highly skilled” which many of these companies purport to be seeking. The point is that Elon and co are perpetrating a myth when they say that there is a labor shortage in tech in the US. When the truth is that there is actually an oversaturation of highly skilled tech workers in the US, not a shortage. at every level from entry-level to senior and beyond.
@Godzillamonstrosity5 күн бұрын
@@missmytime I agree that there is oversaturation of tech talent at the senior levels. But at the entry level, I'm told by recruiters in the field there is a labor crunch (at least for smaller software companies). But I agree with you that this should not be an issue for the big tech companies (FANG) which have tens of thousands of applicants for entry level jobs from qualified American CS majors and it is often these big tech companies (not small software companies) that use most of the H1B visas to bring in overseas workers which is strange.

The trade off was indentures servitude to a business. Fortunate for us the company was awesome to us until it went under but I could only imagine the way others could have been extorted.

@ also I will add that we never had or applied for citizenship because we ended up being there about 7 years. My fellow Americans never want to admit that our education system is not focusing on helping US children become the best and brightest versions of themselves. We are falling significantly behind the rest of the developed world and instead of addressing that issue, they call it “elitist” to say we need to work more diligently on American education gaps. Immigrants come to work and send their children to school because they know education is the great equalizer.

Lefties don't ever listen to normal people - They only want to talk down to them as if they've lost all their "patience". Notice how Kamala lost now - This is how Modi won, 3 times. The third time being decidedly weaker. Do you think everyone who voted for MAGA Trump were bigots? No! There certainly are bigots in there, but you need to fight them by faithfully listening to what normal people say across the spectrum and take them seriously. Using that, one can bring a sane solution that can nip bigoted far-right policy approaches in the bud. Else, you will have to wait for the inevitable bad consequences of said policies before finding the right one.

Children are more successful when they are well-rounded and fulfilled. The arts are a great way to give children an outlet for creative and emotional expression.
@Sarcasticron4 күн бұрын
Learning an instrument doesn't just give you an emotional outlet (many people will say that music saved their lives). It also teaches your brain how to learn. The techniques used to get good at music apply to anything else you want to tackle in life, but it's also physical, so I think the lessons sink in better, and become automatic. So many kids would benefit just from the lesson that you're not going to get it right the first time, so you don't have to cry and give up when you make a mistake. Just analyse what you did, think about how to do it better, and try again. Some people need five tries, and some need a hundred tries, but that doesn't actually make a difference in how good you can get after some time. And if you do music in a group, it teaches how to interact with other people. It breaks my heart that so many kids can't afford to participate.

While it is good to finally see that some of MAGA is actually capable of disagreeing with their cult leader - it is the opposite of what you say in comparison to progressives. they're calling out democrats constantly.
