A few more things about H1B visas. - they’ve been used by companies to train Indians in America in order to outsource jobs to India. Many Americans have suffered the indignity of training their own job outsources. - immigrant workers can’t unionize, if start they lose their job and their visa - immigrant workers often work diligently for lower pay and lower benefits in the hope of becoming permanent - if you look at the H1B workers that are brought in, a minority are those “incredibly well educated” engineers. Many are technicians, accountants, service workers etc. - H1B visas are used by company founders as an easy way to get their friends into America.

They weren't the highly motivated innovators Elon is claiming they are, they were mostly motivated in sending the bulk of their paycheck home to India. Because family size has changed over the years there is hole in our economy. Immigrants must fill the hole. Are they going to take the high paying jobs or are they going to take the low-paying jobs is the only question? It is and will continue to be and absolute necessity. If you don't understand that and you didn't quite comprehend that that was the situation we are in it doesn't take long to get yourself up to speed. But once you're up to speed you should never make a comment like you did ever again because it's asinine. At the end of February, there are federal elections in Germany - and Elon Musk actively supports the far-right German party AfD ("Alternative for Germany"). The ideology and behavior of the AfD are basically identical to the ideology and behavior of Donald Trump and MAGA Republicans. It was only in May 2024, shortly before the EU elections, that the AfD's lead candidate relativized Nazis in an interview. He said he would never say that anyone who wore an SS uniform was automatically a criminal. There had already been scandals beforehand, but this statement even broke the camel's back with other far-right EU parties - they no longer want to work with the AfD because it is too far-right even for them. Incidentally, the AfD did not kick this very politician out of the party. He is still an AfD member and is still active as an MEP in the EU Parliament. However, the AfD has nominated him as a candidate for the German Bundestag, i.e. for the very election at the end of February that Elon Musk is calling on people to vote for the AfD. Elon Musk actively supports Nazi allies.

The problem is that they will post an "entry level" engineering position requiring 2-3 years of experience, often times with very specialized equipment which sometimes is only available with the company posting said "entry level" position. These same companies will then turn around and hire someone with an H1B who doesn't have that experience but does come with a PhD (instead of your Bachelors) and they pay them the entry level wage and get to tell investors how they have bolstered the number of PhD employees while keeping costs low. Of course if you are top 5% of your class graduating from a top 20 university, none of this applies to you (or if you scored an internship at the company you were applying to).

And what percentage of people on an H1B don't leave once their visa expires? They'll be tracked down and put on a plane, also it leaves a mark and makes you unhirable in the industry. Yea, why would anyone in the US want to become an engineer, it's a lot of work and when you get your degree you're competing with foreign engineers who are willing to accept 60k a year, for a job that should pay 100k+ This is what Elon really wants, to import engineers who will work for the 60k that he wants to pay and not demand what an engineer should make which is 120k. THIS IS WHY WE DONT HAVE ENGINEERS, CUZ THE DEGREE IS 120K WORTH OF WORK AND IT PAYS MORE LIKE 60K. This has been a major problem for the US for a long time, no one is going to do what it takes to get that sort of degree if the job at the end doesn't pay enough to make it worthwhile... so the solution that companies have found isn't PAY MORE, its hire foreign workers who will do the same job for less... Minimum wage doesn't go up Average Annual Income doesn't keep up with inflation Foreign workers are brought in in every field because they will accept 1/2 the pay that a US worker expects for the same job... This is how these fuckin monopolistic companies keep profits sky high, keep shareholders swimming in dividends, keep paying their CEO's enough to buy small countries and keep paying their workers 7.25 an Hour... This is the truth of the republican party that no one wants you to see...
@abcatos18 күн бұрын
American Jobs should go to Americans.
@write2pras8419 күн бұрын
It’s not that foreign workers on H1B will work for less. H1B jobs have minimum salary requirements that are quite high and job descriptions that are very specific. The issue is the visa is employer sponsored so is only valid for that employer who sponsors it. Leaving/Quitting will mean the person has to find another qualifying job with an employer who will sponsor, which is hard generally and near impossible in the current job market. So most H1B visa holders are at the mercy of their employers to maintain their legal status which makes them ripe to be taken advantage of: like no salary increases given, benefits cut to the bone, not allowing travel to home country for any events/occasions, etc.

Who wants to have a H1B in these times? Going to America as an Immigrant is no opportunity anymore.
@abhishekpandey324419 күн бұрын
If you are an Indian, unmarried, couple of years into your career and qualify for an H1B it is one hell of an opportunity. You get paid a US salary, usually double the median US income for an individual, get to work on cutting edge stuff if the company is one of the MAANGs or somthing similar, since you are an Indian you are hyper focused on saving, highly resilient to occasional racist remarks, send most of your savings back home to uplift your family there, I see it as absolute win, with little to no downside.

Elon Musk so obviously conned his way into the MAGA crowd, I can’t help but feel strangely pleased by the backlash of his perceived ingenuity.

As a former econ major on college, may I add my two cents? It seems to be that capitalism could easily solve the problem, and that's by paying a higher wage for the tech workers that's now being artificially depressed. That would drive more college grads toward that field, econ 101 stuff. The tech billionaire class, however, would rather not have to use the free market; by using these visas they can keep the wages artificially lower, which does NOT induce the free market to work as it would normally. That is, they are using the government to depress wages and crying wolf thay cant find the labor they want when it's their own policies responsible for that! Sort of ironic, because those same folks have sounded the alarm that illegal immigrants who provide cheap unskilled labor are depressing wages for American workers in hospitality, agriculture, food service, construction, etc. In fact, immigrants on H1B visas do the exact same thing and as that helps the tech billionaires, they want more!!! The billionaire elite is doing EXACTLY what they say is hurting Americans in low skilled labor jobs. That makes them complete HYPOCRITES! And once again, the MAGAt base is fooled. I don't have skin in this game, but it seems the tech billionaires are playing both sides of the issue! What's more, they've found a way around the capitalist system that in fact simply amounts to a subsidy for them. You know what that is? SOCIALISM!!!
