MAGDA OLIVERO - Mefistofele 1976

This is a very rare document, a video recording of a live performance of Boito's Mefistofele, given in Newark in 1976, with Magda Olivero in the role of Margarita, Jerome Hines as Mefistofele, Giuseppe Campora as Faust and Alfredo Silipigni conducting. The last 2 scenes of the opera are mad scenes and are most taxing for sopranos ; Magda, already in her mid sixties, is in total command vocally and scenically. It is the only filmed excerpts from a real performance that we have of Magda Olivero, no lip-sync as it was done at that period for operatic movies. Here we have a glimpse of the legendary frenzy she was able to generate on an audience when she completely immerses herself in the skin of the protagonist. Her vocal technique was so accomplished that she could completely forget about it and navigate effortlessly through the difficult musical passages, free to let her feelings soar with the music, all to the great delight of an euphoric public.
Si tratta di un documento molto raro, una registrazione video di un'esecuzione dal vivo del Mefistofele di Boito, data a Newark nel 1976, con Magda Olivero nel ruolo di Margarita, Jerome Hines come Mefistofele, Giuseppe Campora come Faust e Alfredo Silipigni alla direzione. Le ultime due scene dell'opera sono scene di follia e sono molto impegnative per un soprano; Magda, già a metà degli anni Sessanta, è in totale padronanza vocale e scenica. È l'unico estratto filmato di una rappresentazione reale che abbiamo di Magda Olivero, senza "lip-sync", come si faceva in quel periodo per i film lirici. Qui abbiamo un assaggio della leggendaria frenesia che è stata capace di generare su un pubblico quando si immerge completamente nella pelle della protagonista. La sua tecnica vocale è stata così compiuta che ha potuto dimenticarsene completamente e a navigare senza sforzo attraverso i difficili passaggi musicali, libera di lasciar cantare i suoi sentimenti sul fiato della musica, il tutto per la grande gioia di un pubblico euforico.

Amazing. I am always intrigued (and a bit cautious, now) when I find vintage footage on KZbin of artists I've admired. You never quite know what you're going to get. It can be terribly disappointing. In spite of the foggy visuals here, what shines through is the artistry both vocal and dramatic. I did wonder if I was watching a staging by Wieland Wagner from 60s Bayreuth but that thought past quickly enough. In the end you are left with this glimpse of an artist still in complete command of her voice and able to project everything she wants to. It has enhanced my appreciation of Ms Oliviero. You have done her a great service by posting. Thank you.

I had the great good fortune to see her in "Tosca" in San Francisco. Thank you so much for this brief film. Too bad it's so fuzzy, but one can get a good idea of how she was in such control of dynamics and phrasing. One of the very great artists of the operatic world, and I simply adore her totally identified characters. "Nobody could die like Magda."

She was in splendid voice that night. So was the chorus! They blew us out of the theater in the prologue (positioned in the side balconies) and in the finale. Campora was a cross to bear, however.
