Dakota looked so amazing in the movie. The way she has black hair and smokey eye make up no make up face and the flirtatious smile while looking at Olivia ,that particular scene is breathetaking

Your description is exactly what makes this film, in it's entirety, an exceptional piece of art. The men the trees and the beach and the sea are the canvas and frame of the female lives we are experiencing. Wonderfully deep performances in a women's film for women.👏👏👏👏

This film has a very 70’s/80’s European vibe which is rarely seen outside of France these days. A lot of pregnant nothing gives the film weight, the abstractions the suspense. The theme - more subtle than I imagined it would be - is an important and seldom talked about topic. I know these kind of mothers and hopefully there’s some kind of redemptive process that is kick started by realizing through this important movie that they’re not the only ones who feel like unnatural mothers.

This is one of those movies that I absolutely love but i could never recommend to a regular person. There’s so much nuance between the lines of dialogue that you really need to give the movie your undivided and there’s just not that many people who can do that for 2 hours. I hope Maggie continues to direct. She’s incredible.

I agree with Th Ceej. It’s not your average, main stream movie. I had a feeling that this is would be so with Maggie Gyllenhaal. To reflect about the many meanings of how to interpret the scenes and their underlying meanings is imperative to appreciate the depth and complexities of the various relationships. I’m a fan.

I loved this film, incredible acting, so atmospheric. Such a thought-provoking meditation on the murkier sides of motherhood. I'm surprised by the commenters who were bored- what about the doll?! That had me so worried! I loved the ending, for me that moment of lightness with the daughters stopped it being a morality tale about being a bad mum, and allowed it to simply be a vital meditation. Loved it!

@connorveach5986
@connorveach5986 2 жыл бұрын
Wouldn’t call those plot holes. The pinecone bruising her shoulder was weird (I can’t imagine any pinecone doing that) but that seemed there for more atmospheric or thematic reasons, like the environment was becoming actively hostile towards her. You could look at it as nature itself attacking her for leaving her children (“I’m an unnatural mother”). And the sea worm in the doll worked in a similar way: there’s something ugly and scary hiding in her past, symbolized by the doll

@@connorveach5986 you’re right! I guess i just didn’t delve into the deeper meaning of it. I think i was looking for something deeper in the meaning of those little things throughout the movie, but they were there to purely show her haunts of motherhood.

@@connorveach5986 that’s exactly how I read it - the worm, the pinecone, the fruit that was rotting underneath. The pinecone and the noisy family - her tranquility being interrupted, much like her life was when her children came along. The fruit - very symbolic in the film of the song she used to sing with her children - but rotten underneath, like a facade that gave way to ugly truth. The worm - felt like neglect, because she hadn’t taken care of the doll, like her children. Worms can also parasites, which she sometimes seemed to view them as. Full of layers and all added to the unease. Still think it wasn’t a perfect film but I really liked a lot of it.

This movie is so incredible, all throughout the movie you are thinking is Nina the daughter, is someone going to die, is this or that and you can never tell....until the end.... And maybe not even then.

I just didn’t get this film, a lot of scenes were pointless and didn’t push the story along.

I think she always looks natural. Now she had dyed hair and loved her make up. I think she was more made up than in other films.

I thought the movie was about a mother who was traumatized for having lost her daughter, until later in the movie. The whole doll think... I didn't get her obsession with it.

Leda didn't understand it either. She told Nina she didn't know why she took it. The way she cleaned it up and redressed it were acts of a nurturing mother. She had stated she was an unnatural mother. Perhaps she was acting out, playing out with a doll because it represented what she had been doing when raising her daughters, just play acting while trying to feel a connection that just wasn't there for her. But I think Leda has a disturbed psyche for whatever reason. She knew the little girl was upset losing the doll and yet hung onto it. What DID compel her to keep her and clean it up before giving it back? Was there some kind of symbolism in it? I really can't quite figure it out. And why did the girl bite her doll? Acting out because her parents fought? Have no idea what that was about.

@@songbirdy I think the reason why she took the doll was because it reminded her own daughters doll. I think it was symbol of her own pain and guilt. She tried to give it back, but something stopped her. But I didn't understand it completely, either.

Well in an interview with Dakota she said that Elena Ferrante told Maggie that she absolutely shouldn’t make Leda into a psychopath. Because mothers that are bad are not crazy.
