Your version of this narrative of a cynically romantic schoolboy out of his depth allows the words more space than in Rod Stewart's raucous original, in which what I recall most is his aggressive vocals whose style simplifies the storyline. The opening instrumental lines with mandolin, bass, guitar are lovely and these too differ positively from Maggie May, 1969 (I think...). In keeping with this "softer" reading of the song, you hold back on the drums--a nice touch that works well with the guitars-mandolin sound. You take what you need from the first song and impress your own thoughtful ideas on top of the melody and lyrics. It's a gift...
