Check out Aurora from Norway, she's on another level. She has a way more interesting backstory, better voice (despite not having all the expensive schooling this girl has), better dancer, and her songs have way more depth (not boring folksy love songs) despite the fact she wrote most of them by age 9. Additionally, Weyes Blood is pretty spectacular, as is Aldous Harding (though she's a bit odd but more interesting than Maggie). There are some amazing new artists hidden out there, despite the hell on earth known as Tik Tok.

I'm 48. I first came to know Maggie from the KZbin video with Pharrell Williams. I bought tickets to her first tour which was sold out. We rode from Vegas to San Diego to see her perform at a cute little church. Her opening act was Overcoat . The entire night was fantastic. Maggie was shy and seemed a little uneasy. I've followed her musical journey ever since. To see her now, she is comfortable and confident and yet still vulnerable. Congratulations Maggie.

I love how she turns an upbeat, happy Whitney song into a morose, depressing song. It goes from being a confident song that could be sang by anyone who is popular and has little to no problem finding dates--yet still hasn't found that one "special" person--into a song that would fit in well with a lonely, depressed person who just can't seem to catch a break in meeting someone to complete him or her. Great job, Maggie. I am surprised that Whitney never sang it this way, though (at least to my knowledge she never did). The lyrics are so emo it hurts and I think Whitney could have done an amazing acoustic version like this herself. RIP Whitney.

This week in Parallels of Maggie’s Life and Mine... I’ve been visiting Miami all my life. It’s the first place I travelled to when I was little... and Whitney’s ‘I Wanna Dance With Somebody’ was the first song that came on the car radio. Not only did it instantly become my first memory of Miami, but it captured all the emotions of being in a different city, a different country... Also, for some cosmic reason I can’t understand, everytime I’m in Miami I’ll hear it in some unexpected situation. Sometimes very in the forefront, sometimes in the background... but always there... And it’s always beautiful. It puts a smile on my face everytime and I always take a minute to enjoy my little inside joke with the Universe. Music is everything to me. Always has been, always will be. Thanks, Maggie, for helping me keep it that way! 🙏🏼

The emotional intelligence of this woman is epically inspiring. Maggie is not afraid to look within and allow you to see her path of reasoning to articulation which is a refreshing revelation in itself. I just gut feel that Maggie’s super high level of observation just won’t diminish with her fame. Perhaps we will need to catch up to understand her as she grows though? Time will tell. I’m excited to watch this play out. I’m excited to see her empathy cut through in her work. The world will be better for Maggie doin her thing that’s for damn sure.

I believe it. She is the only artist in country who knows how to write a damn song. Also, she tells stories like “Country” music is supposed to be. She is the only “musician” and authentic singer-songwriter in the genre right now. I stopped listening to what they call country when the only things distinguishing it from Pop were the tune of the instruments and the lyrics But I remember when I heard her breakout single merry go round and I thought to myself this is either going to be a one hit wonder or is going to be a modern day poppy tribute to real countryX

Matthew Schwenker, your comment on KM being “the only artist in country who knows how to write a damn song” proves that your ears need rescuing. I encourage you to try listening to more artists who aren’t so mainstream, for example artists such as Sturgill Simpson, Colter Wall, Ian Noe, Cody Jinks, The Devil Makes Three, and Margo Price just to name a few.

What I like about artists like Maggie is how real they are, I got into art when I was dressed down by my friend coolie Ranks we were at his then girlfriends art class exhibition at Columbia university. I found the art drab and uninspiring...but sitting quietly I observed my friends glee and joy even at those pieces I thought was pure garbage. Sk on our way out I ask if he was just being nice. He got quiet for what seem like forever, then he said...your art is ugly to some people too stop judging and learn to appreciate art and you will always see only the good that's there...I never see what you see he said, I just appreciate the effort. From that day all art touches me deeply. I say this to say like my friend, they always seem to bring us good rates because the see beyond the ugly. Like the guitar player.
@mischa2643

Not all art touches me deeply, but I appreciate most of it. Sometimes for what I see in it. Sometimes simply for what the artist put into it, because it’s not _for_ me. You’re not always the target of a piece, and I’ve never been _moved_ by a piece where that was the case, but the appreciation remains.
