I saw this movie when it first came out and my friends brother was the manager of the local movie theater, for my friends birthday we saw this film and we sat in the first row and the older girls next to me were on their knees crying, shouting and pulling their hair!. My older 13-year-old sister was The Big Beatles Fan in the family. My dad took the family to the local movie drive-in, and we saw the film from the back of the pickup bed, tailgate down, absolutely memorably times. The film was directed by American Richard Lester, though there were earlier Rock n' Roll films, this film representation was a precedent to popular music in film and tv afterwards. :)

All those girls chasing them came to be known as Beatlemania. In fact when they came to the U.S. The airport was overrun with tens of thousands of girls lining the terminal roof , the arrival lounge out on the Tarmac, They lined the road leaving the airport and going to their hotel where they had one whole floor reserved for them and the floor above and below were also reserved and filled with security.

When they finally came up for a title for this film, based on a phrase Ringo said after drinking at the London Clubs before Filming one day, "It's been a hard day's night", they then need a Title Song for it. John Lennon and Paul McCartney wrote the whole song OVERNIGHT. And sang it to the director the next day, the words on thr back of a match stick book...this is Only a Small example of the Real Girls chasing them in real life in 1963- 65.....

"Why are they running?" I'm reminded of an episode of the Dick Van Dyke Show (from 1965) which dealt with this theme. The musicians were played by the singing duo Chad and Jeremy (A Summer Song, Yesterday's Gone, Can't Get Used To Losing You). You are watching the invention of MTV. This is where music videos came from essentially. Their movies were actually long extended full album music videos. The Beatles legendary!. So creative and so ahead of their time!

I always loved the cowbell in that song. To live in that time, as I did, and witness the craziness of Beatlemania was a very unique experience. I cannot think of any other artist who caused such a stir except for Elvis Presley. And even he didn't have the following that the Beatles did. Elvis was mainly idolized by girls. Teenage boys and girls were hit by Beatlemania. It was a completely different world. I really liked the fashion. It was called the Mod look. I wish that I could go back and live it again.

The fans chasing The Beatles everywhere is actually a tamed down version of what it was really like for them. The teenaged girls screamed non-stop until they fainted by the scores whenever The Beatles made an appearance. Hordes of police were required to hold back the fans, who would still break through the blockades and run after them. At a Beatles concert, the only audible sound was that of tens of thousands of teenage girls screaming at the top of their lungs for the entire time they were on the stage. That's why it was called BEATLEMANIA!!

WHY do so many people who comment on You Tube refer to the fainting, screaming, crying female fans as "WOMEN" It wasn' t WOMEN (which then was any female OVER 21 and UP) it was us teenage GIRLS, and girls under the age of 12, even as young as 7!!! WOMEN did not respond to the Beatles that way. MOST adult women and men, didn't approve or like the Beatles at that time and were appalled by their teen and younger daughters (and sons) who were crazy over the Beatles . I was one of those screaming fans back in 1964 when I was 16/17 years old. LOL ( I am STILL a die hard fan today, and always WILL be)

Paul McCartney was once asked if the girls' screams ever bothered him, especially in concert in which the screams would drown out an airplane flying overhead! He said not at all. To him, it was the female equivalent of guys cheering on their favorite soccer team: "YEAAAAH!!!" Anyway, great reaction! The entire Hard Day's Night movie is a fun movie to watch.

Check out the opening chord. That chord is a result of four instruments playing different parts together. The Beatles wanted the opening to be something totally unique and fresh. So they came up with this chord which puzzeled musicians for decades. Oh, and the song itself was written upon request from the film producer. The title had to be the tite of the movie - Hard Days Night. The next day John and Paul came in with the song we just listened to.

The film gives the moviegoers a slight taste of “Beatlemania” that engulfed them and the world at the time their popularity skyrocketed. I can’t imagine having to run for your life everywhere you go and riding in secret for years. Imagine a huge global sized hurricane and in the middle where it’s calm are 4 young men. The rest of the world is going bananas. It all became so much that John Lennon wrote the song ‘Help’. Listen to the song and lyrics. He’s LITERALLY asking for help because it’s all too much.

This is actually a very toned down version of Beatlemania. In their concerts the screaming was so loud they couldn't hear each other. You should check out Shea Stadium. 55,600 girls screaming, some fainting, and their performance was still great. When they landed in Australia, 300,000 fans were waiting for them. They were realistically never out in public being chased. They were quickly taken to their hotels, hoping the police could keep everyone back so they weren't crushed. They had their own floor at the hotel. But everyone always wanted a part of them. It got to a point where I've read accounts from at least 2 of them that they had to meet in the bathroom to get privacy to talk. So, toned down movie version. It's still fun, though.

Group were put in a very dangerous situation in the Philippines in 1966 when Ferdinand Marcos withdrew concert security due to a perceived slight. In friendlier incidents, the band were mobbed by fans elsewhere; "The Beatles In Cleveland" is a good read, with details of the notorious August 1966 Municipal Stadium near-riot. Group began to hate touring, and gave it up for the recording studio at the end of that year.

I was at BOTH CLEVELAND Beatles' concerts on Sept. 15, 1964 when I was 17, and again on Aug 14, 1966 when I was 19. "The Beatles in Cleveland" book by David Schwensen covers BOTH Cleveland concerts.......BOTH concerts were stopped, (the 1964 one in Cleveland's Public Auditorium and 1966 as you said in Cleveland Municipal Stadium.), by officials because of the fans reactions. After 15 to 20 minutes the Beatles were allowed to complete the show, but were removed from the stage while the "officials" tried to settle things down. They didn't come here to Cleveland during their 1965 tour because our MAYOR BANNED them after the incident at the 1964 concert.

Had a question you might be able to answer being an Opera Singer. Do you know the opera that was used in this movie during the interruption of an opera by Pauls' Grandfather on the stage with the TV director (Victor Spinetti)? looking in horror!! Also, showing my age here, Norm, the manager, was trying to open a carton of milk(not a taco) with his teeth that they used to sell in vending machines. Great job! Love this!!

Most ADULT WOMEN would not be screaming, crying and running after the Beatles. I was 16/17 in 1964 and was (and still AM at 77 now) a die hard Beatles fan.

See the whole movie, not autobiographical, but semi-autobiographical. Not a parody like Spinal Tap, but played for laughs. After the band broke up, John had a saying, "I got tired of being Elvis Beatle" As big or bigger than Elvis or Michael Jackson. They quite touring early. Not the same after the break-up

It was supposed to be Paul's granddad, played by Wilfred Brambell, who at the time, was the star of the British sit-com "STEPTOE AND SON." Soon after in the '70s the AMERICAN sit-com "SANFORD and SON" starring Redd Foxx, was based on the British "Steptoe and Son."

"Beatlemania" was a phenomenal thing for the foursome as well. After they got signed to make recordings, with Brian Epstein becoming their manager they did a couple of gigs as usual, and all of sudden under Epsteins' guidance, they became a "thing". They had been four young musicians from working class backgrounds playing wherever they could..and all of a sudden, they were hobnobbing with royalty, models, movie stars.., it was like a non stop roller coaster ride.

we have a lot in common. i'm a juiliard trained debt collector. any one who refuses to pay juilliard trained opera singers - i break their legs. "a hard day's night" is a unique r&r film in many ways. its the first r&r movie, besides elvis films, where the performers were allowed actual dialogue. they didn't share the screen with other r&r acts. and, unlike elvis, they basically played themsewlves where elvis played fictional characters. you'll notice the word "beatles" is NEVER mentioned in the film. they're never called the beatles until the final concert scene where "the beatles" is blazoned in lights behind them. richard lester, the director, was an american who directed a couple of comedy shorts for the british comedy troup "the goons." which, coincidentally, george martin, the beatles record producer, produced comedy albums for the goons before he met the beatles. lester went on to direct the beatles' 2nd film "help!" the following year, in 1966 lester directed the film based on the broadway musical comedy "a funny thing happened on the way to the forum." it includes the same fresh and silly sight gags lester used in his beatles' films. ITS AN EXCELLENT FILM! lester went on to direct what's considered by critics to be the 2 BEST musketeer films that are classics in their own right. "the three musketeers" (1973) and its sequel "the four musketeers" (1974). both with all-star casts and full of humor and suspense. thanks for the video.
