Johnny's live, black and white version of "It's Not For Me To Say" from 1957 is even more impressive than even this great song and performance. There you really get to see his young, shy, impressionable, "little boy lost" personality, coupled with a fantastic vocal performance.

I see some comments referring to Johnny in the past tense. I saw a video yesterday of him singing the Christmas song less than a month ago. He is currently 88 and running circles around my 61 year old carcass.

Johnny Mathis, totally class person. His voice is often compared with Nat King Cole, two of the best singers of all time. Mathis was also a champion athlete.

For me, this song was one of my favorites. If I was able to marry the woman I loved way back then,this song would have been the perfect way I would have felt about her. I could imagine her and myself with my arms around her waist looking at the ocean and the sky on top of that hill. That being said,here are a few other songs to listen to if you already haven't. "Maria" is one. Another is a Christmas Carol called "Oh Holy Night. And "Chances Are." Have yourself a wonderful night, day, week or month.❤

Grew up listening to him. My deepest appreciation came after seeing him with Henry Mancini at the Hollywood Bowl. Absolutely mesmerizing.I was pregnant with my son and think he's such a good musician because he was "there". You, I think can be a snob when it comes to popular music.

The producers wouldn't let him. They wanted him to sing his early hits in a style that could easily be sung along with. You picked up that this was very rigid. It was but is also an ear worm. I can't tell you how many times I find myself humming this song.

According to sources, Mathis has sold the third most albums of any single artist, after Elvis and Frank Sinatra. This was one of his early releases. He was discovered and mentored by Mitch Miller, who had a sing-along TV show and was the head of A&R at Columbia records. Johnny tells the story of how he would do his own improvisation and stylization when auditioning for Mitch, and Mitch told him that he liked his voice but he had to do it straight like he showed him. So maybe this reflects the stripped down style that he was trained to do, which, to be honest, made him very successful. I don't know what his initial style was but maybe he added his own flavor back into it a little later.

Mitch wanted Johnny Mathis to sing it so that anyone could sing it that is why it seems so simple. This was probably one of the easiest songs Johnny has ever sang.

@@reginaldfigueroa4570 Maybe, as Wonderful Wonderful was Johnny's first release. Although anyone could sing, no one sounded like Johnny singing it. And the flipside of the single was When Sunny Gets Blue, which is a bit more complex.

Bank shut down for maintenance on MLK so the Thanks won't go through. I included this one in the Mathis set to show another aspect of his singing. Here it is 1950s Middle of the Road, with strings and simpler melodies, and more emphasis on lyrics.

This lady does not know what she is saying. A voice like Johnny's comes along only once. His timing and phrasing are incomparable. She should stick to opera or rock music! She is not in a position to critique Johnny's singing.
