Johnny Mathis was a major role model for Barbra Streisand,. You can hear it in their unique improvisations that demonstrate their artistry and enrich their performances immeasurably. I have loved both of these remarkable singers for decades and am glad to think that younger people can find their way to this great music by such stellar artists.

OK, don’t get me started in Johnny Mathis. His vocals are insane. I once saw him live and he was one of those few singers that sound just as good live as recorded. All of his music is phenomenal but one of my favorite albums is Goodnight Dear Lord. Although I am not religious he sings some of the most beautiful songs ever. He sings both Ave Maria’s but pick anything he sings and you will love it. Another singer that is not generally known but has a 3 1/2 octave voice is John Gary. My favorite songs by him are If Ever I Would Leave You, Tenderly, and although he is not Hispanic he does my favorit version of La Malagueña. By the way he held several underwater records. I think you will like him.

One of the most acrobatic popular vocalists of the 20th century, and alive in the 21st. His "Wonderful, Wonderful" is fire, and on "Pieces of Dreams" (which she should analyze), he floored late night host Johnny Carson (and the studio audience)

Mathis also had the raw ability to become an Olympic-grade track star. (Maybe exceptional breath control is the common denominator there.) So he had to choose. Couldn't do intense training in both. I saw him in Vegas in 2002. He still had the stuff.

The arrangement was written by Percy Faith with the input of Mitch Miller, then A&R director at Columbia. A symphonic oboist, Miller suggested the solo oboe measures on which Mathis begins the crescendo on the phrase “On my way.”

Ray Stevens, who is known mostly for his comedy, recorded a wonderful version of MISTY. He and some musicians were in a recording studio, rehearsing and decided to take a break. They began playing around with the song, not making fun of it, but trying some new things. Someone suggested they put it on tape, it was released as a single, and won a Grammy.

Suddently all you could hear was all of the females giant unified fainting and swoons, "Ahhhhh" and everyone broke out in laughter. He obviously knew how to play the audience.

Hi Maggie. Thanks for doing Johnny Mathis. He is from my generation. The "look at me" at the very end was unlike Ella Fitzgerald's rendition. That was almost what? Plaintive? Hint - Sohyang does a bluesy Ella-version of" Misty" on her "Begin Again" tour that is breathtaking. Cheers.

Anyone who has felt love for the first time and was overwhelmed by such a relationship and 'felt like a kitten up a tree' will cry like a baby when they listen to this, their first love. And it won't matter how much time has passed by, the feeling will always be there. Note: How great was this song? Johnny Mathis produced a greatest hits album and 'Misty' was not included because it was felt it would so dominate a listeners attention it would be better to leave it out and feature it in another album. Many years later, in fact to this day (October, 2024), another song has been produced which can relate to this beautiful song as another example of a love influenced by a "misty' relationship and the song is 'Bad Valentine' (the jazzy version) sung by Angelina Jordan (at 18 years old) and written and produced by Angelina and Toby Gad. Post script: Maggie, I know I'm commenting to an older video and that you have already reacted to Angelina's beautiful new jazzy song so that fella in 'Bad Valentine' surely will melt when he listens to the great Johnny Mathis sing one of the most beautiful songs ever recorded, 'Misty'.

I grew up on this music! Love this song and Chances Are! A singer I'd really like to hear you react to is Diana Krall. She doesn't have the greatest range but she really knows how to phrase a song. My guitar teacher turned me on to her for the song When I Look In Your Eyes (originally sung by Rex Harrison in the original Dr. Doolittle to a seal at sea after a shipwreck). He called it the most b-e-autiful love song ever written. (He didn't do the b-e-a part... I did that for you!). She's not old enough to know the songs she's singing! She also plays jazz piano and she's drop dead gorgeous! I also love Popsicle Toes, Besame Mucho, and Frim Fram Sauce. She's a huge Nat King Cole fan (as am I). Love your reactions and the way you break it all down!
