Getting the g was the breakthrough for me. Then learning all the alternative fingerings for all the Altissimo notes after that, working them in the scales, and then finding the easiest routes to use them and all the scales. I then went and wrote down on a saxophone fingering chart for each scale, the most optimal way to play a scale using each of the fingerings and I’ve got a system down for myself on my horn where I’ve only got to do two alternative fingerings to get all the notes all the way up into the 5th octave it takes a little while to warm up into it maybe about 30 minutes of playing but that’s nothing you can’t do in the green room before a show. I’m starting to get better at performing musically scalar altissimo on the stage but currently I’ve got about 10 solid scales where I can go up there into the fifth and sixth Octave, Otherwise I cheat a lil in the others and skip the 3rd oct B and bflat.😅

SMH..... I do not read music anymore, its been decades.. i play by ear. Playing Altissimo notes escaped me in my youth when I was playing with Funk groups, but i'm am determined to learn this now. I have to be honest and say that what I just saw was really a video of magic and black sorcerery... (ahem.. that was supposed to be funny)... This is magic to me... I'm going to try this before I go out and search for a local guy to teach/help me to get these Altissimo notes down. Thanks immensly.

Thanks for tuning in. This specific video is meant as a beginner guide to understanding that squeaks are actually producing usable notes. I've simplified the fingerings by only using one, which is the front key by itself in order to produce the 14 notes. I am in the process of making an altissimo book with fingerings but its taking a lot longer to finish than I thought. My other videos all have visual sight lines to my fingers.

Great video! Have you ever tried the plastic reeds? I blow a BARI reed, I tailor made it to my personal specifications (by rubbing the reed down on some wet & dry sand paper, using the finest grade, and one clean rub on the smooth side of the reed, trying it out after each and every rub) the results are fantastic! No more wetting the reeds, no more buying a box of 10 cane reeds with only 3-4 reeds being actually up to scratch. I busk on the streets 5 days a week (weather permitting) and play for 2.5 hours each time, the plastic reeds last absolutely ages, I'm talking years as opposed to a month with a cane reed. I will never go back to a cane reed again!
@Sirvalorsax7 жыл бұрын
The closest I've come to using plastic reeds was in high school when I used plastic cover reeds. I could never really get used to the sound or the response of plastic or synthetic reeds. I have a very long reed life span now but my process is very complicated.

Hello, Thanks for tuning in! I use Vandoren red box 2.5 I won't have an alto sax until October because I have SUPER LIMITED SPACE. So I can't really say if this works "exactly" the same for alto. However, basic overtone principles are the same on all saxophones.

There are a TON of fingering chairs out there. I'm in the process of writing a book but it is very extensive and may be a while before I can finish it. Cannonball Saxophones has a good one on their website( cannonball music.com) with very common tax fingerings as a good place to start.

Will it work? Yes, the harmonic series and the nature of vibration suggest the same results in theory (and, of course, with practice).

The altissimo G with that finger is a lil rough, but if you use the side A# key it really stabilizes it. Ruins the whole gimmick of "magic fingering" but it works

It is most likely a 2.5 Vandoren redbox. I use a lip-out embouchure because it doesn't require large tip opening mouthpieces or really stiff reeds. This Brilhart #7 is closer to a 5* than a 7 on the Otto Link scale.

You really shouldn’t count overtones. How many notes does the fingering produce that sound good and that’s just 3. Other than that the video is good.
@Sirvalorsax4 жыл бұрын
Other people may find more uses for the overtones than just 3 notes. It's best to provide them with as many options as possible
@benhostetler2684 жыл бұрын
Sirvalorsax it just seems a little disingenuous to say there is 14 when that is technically true not every overtone is really functional in a performance setting but a really advanced player may be able to use 5-7 of them in a way that will make them sound really cool but the goal should always be practicality.and certainly 14 notes with one fingering isn’t really practical. Other than that I really liked the video and I thought it was informative and even helpful for many if they really only try for 3 notes.
@espr75644 жыл бұрын
Using this fingering you get a whole of notes with bad intonation - 👎not good
@Sirvalorsax4 жыл бұрын
It is important to establish control when practicing these overtones. Admittedly, some are more out of tune than others as I clearly state in the video and also show how to use effectively to manipulate intonation
