This was a landmark announcement, not just in sports, but in life. This completely destroyed the negative stereotype that HIV is a gay man’s disease. This brought awareness that it is a fully transmittable virus, both sexually and by blood, among heterosexual people as well. I can tell Magic was choked up by this, because announcing you’re HIV Positive is devastating, but he fought on and lived, and is fully undetectable.

I still remember the moment every local TV and radio station in the nation interrupted their programming for live breaking news for Magic's announcement. His fans literally cried as they were being interviewed by local news stations near the Great Western Forum because they knew it was the end of an era. I recall hating the him and the Lakers during this time in my childhood (The Celtics fan in me). Fast forward to nearly 28 years later as I look back and realize what a brave and courageous soul this man is. I can't even begin to imagine what it took for him to come out on live national television in a room full of people as well as the millions of viewers to fully disclose the status of his health and the ridicule he had to endure in the coming years from the media, fellow players, as well as the general public largely due in part of how ignorant society was about the virus at that time. He will forever be an iconic hero of American History on and off the court.

I was in high school then and remember some of my classmates were having unprotected sex and one of them came down with gential warts. Next day I was going to a after school job and this was on the TV and my supervisor told me what happened. The next day at school it was all the talk. Our school nurse offered information about HIV/AIDS and despite a few parents being opposed the school brought in a couple of HIV positive people to talk about how it happened. One was a gay man, two were heterosexual and one from IV drug use. One of the girls on the basketball team said she was being pressured into sex by her boyfriend and this annocement made him change his mind.

Now you're 42 and I'm reading your comment at 35. I'll check this again in 10 years and give you a follow up :)

Magic looks scared and sad at the same time. I am glad he is in a very fortunate situation. I admire his optimism.

I remember when this happened, I was a 8 year old asking my mother how he got aids, she told me unprotected sex, but also likely he would die soon...looking back he must of been very brave & we were still quite uneducated about HIV

There's something about this whole thing that doesn't seem right. It's like the virus doesn't exist in his blood anymore. I support people who have HIV but I am questioning whether or not this man has HIV or not. I could be wrong. Anyone else feel this way?
