At least Charlie Sheen put his hands up and admitted to drug abuse and promiscuous behaviour. This scared him into turning his life around. My good friend contracted HIV from a blood transfusion as a child, and she's older than me (I'm 41) and looks healthier than I do, with rosy cheeks and she is currently asymptomatic despite having the virus for 35 years. She's never gone on to full-blown AIDS. She beat Hepatitis C and her T Cell count is amazing :) Kirsty is my hero x

Idk, imo it was no secret that Freddy was promiscuous and though he didn't really come out, we just knew he was gay and the media/newspapers were printing and selling "Is Freddie dying?"as well as that sterotypical "if you're gay you have aids" bullshite. There was a lead up suspicion that he was sick even before that weight loss showed from the last award Queen recieved. What was weird with Magic Johnson was he literally just got married. The NBA Babyface with a child like smile was promiscuous and messed around? It was more a surprise for me than freddie mercury imo

If this video was titled "Top 10 celebs who died of AIDS" then yeah, Freddie would make the list, but this is about the diagnoses that shocked the world, and with that Magic Johnson is no. 1. There is no doubt that the superstar Laker player who had this charm and charisma and great natural talent that helped propel the NBA to a class of its own and greater popularity, who was straight, his catching the virus was a bigger shock, than a obviously gay man, who was wasting away since the year 1987, and by the time of his death was showing the signs of advanced AIDS with olcers throughout his body. It is only now 25+ years later that people recognize how tragic this was, back then it was expected, and the man was demonized for his sickness and the fact he was gay.

The reason I believe that Magic was chosen over Freddie. Is because the list consist of most “shocking”. Most people assumed that Freddie was a Homosexual and also that he was sick due to his appearance during his final years. Now Magic on the other hand was more “shocking” because this is a MVP athlete , who looks good and is seen a lot on tv/in person (Freddie stayed away from the public, as much as he could during his final days.) so it was totally out of left field when Magic revealed that he had this horrible disease that sadly has taken the lives of many.

They're all tragic but the story which shocked me the most was what happened to ('Starsky') Paul Michael Glaser's family. In 1980, his wife Elizabeth contracted HIV from a tainted blood transfusion during child birth, which meant that their children Ariel (born 1980) & Jake (born 1984) were also born with the virus. Ariel died from AIDS when she was eight years old and then her mother also died from it in 1994. Glaser himself possesses a rare gene which saved him from contracting the virus and it was something that his son inherited. However, when Jake was 25, that resistance to the virus ebbed and he became seriously ill. To the point where his doctors told him that he either start taking the potentially toxic HIV combination medication or meet his maker. Thankfully, he responded well to the drugs, fully recovered and is now healthy.

For those too young to know, the understanding of HIV/AIDS unfolded over years. Since it produced various symptoms, it was quite a while before they were even linked together as one illness. It wasn't known whether it was viral or bacterial, and no one knew how it was spread. It had an incubation period of years, and there was no test to detect it. Medicine has made great strides now, but that took a long time and many, many people died while waiting, most of them young. It was horrific.

I was diagnosed in 2012. Been on and off my medicine for years. Struggling with drug and alcohol use. Pretty much have given up on marriage and kids. It's a hard thing to live with mentally, emotionally and physically.

I started medical school at the beginning of this pandemic. It was awful...it tore families and friends apart, but more importantly the rapid decline due to lack of medicine that was effective. The handsome young men were supported by a vigil of faithful friends. As aidsattacked their brains, if was so heartbreaking that every night I got I the Car to go home I cried. Someone turned me in as depressed and I had to flat out deny it...they would have suspended me. Then the blood transfused aids victims showed up....angry, rightfully, and what could we do? Now I am glad that the drugs are more effective; but not everyone is getting them. I will never heal from the pain of those early victims....and iamupset that it seems to have faded into the wallpaper. It’s still there. We are all at risk. It’s spreading. It’s not just about these few people. There is no one new to this list for yes. Yes, we recently learned about Charlie Sheen. And Issac Asimov. Who has it that’s not speaking? Let’s get aware. Mandatory testing for marriage like they used to do for syphillis. And hepatitis B&C. Why not?
@brendafoster31536 жыл бұрын
Edith Ann Amen, Edith Ann...you are exactly the kind of person that the field of medicine needs...kind, caring and compassionate...anyone who has you as their doctor is a blessed individual...you keep being yourself because the world needs you...God bless you, Edith Ann!!!
@brendafoster31536 жыл бұрын
And, yes, testing should be done not only between people getting married, but anyone and everyone who wants it and the pharmaceutical companies should be bearing the costs for this testing because we all know about the billions of dollars they make every year...they can afford to pay for the testing...wouldn't it be so magnificent if even only one of the big pharmaceuticals stepped up and provided this very important testing?

Edith Ann they should test for it. Everyone should have a mandatory test . If you visit New York every native over 40 lost a loved one to AIDS. They still have trouble talking about it. It took so many ppl too soon
