At least Charlie Sheen put his hands up and admitted to drug abuse and promiscuous behaviour. This scared him into turning his life around. My good friend contracted HIV from a blood transfusion as a child, and she's older than me (I'm 41) and looks healthier than I do, with rosy cheeks and she is currently asymptomatic despite having the virus for 35 years. She's never gone on to full-blown AIDS. She beat Hepatitis C and her T Cell count is amazing :) Kirsty is my hero x

My uncle died of AIDS. Our entire family including his two daughters were devastated with his death but even worse was watching his physical deterioration leading to his death. For me, the shock with Charlie was that something hadn't killed him years before. Having grown up watching him burn thru that amazing talent so carelessly, so aimlessly, it was only a matter of time before something caught up with him - one had to feel for the family and friends he do cavalierly dragged along on his rollercoaster before the diagnosis

Idk, imo it was no secret that Freddy was promiscuous and though he didn't really come out, we just knew he was gay and the media/newspapers were printing and selling "Is Freddie dying?"as well as that sterotypical "if you're gay you have aids" bullshite. There was a lead up suspicion that he was sick even before that weight loss showed from the last award Queen recieved. What was weird with Magic Johnson was he literally just got married. The NBA Babyface with a child like smile was promiscuous and messed around? It was more a surprise for me than freddie mercury imo

If this video was titled "Top 10 celebs who died of AIDS" then yeah, Freddie would make the list, but this is about the diagnoses that shocked the world, and with that Magic Johnson is no. 1. There is no doubt that the superstar Laker player who had this charm and charisma and great natural talent that helped propel the NBA to a class of its own and greater popularity, who was straight, his catching the virus was a bigger shock, than a obviously gay man, who was wasting away since the year 1987, and by the time of his death was showing the signs of advanced AIDS with olcers throughout his body. It is only now 25+ years later that people recognize how tragic this was, back then it was expected, and the man was demonized for his sickness and the fact he was gay.

If you listen to Queen’s “Show must go on” that was the final song Freddie Mercury recorded, and it was done in one take, I watched a documentary on Queen and the band members said that Freddie Mercury was very frail and they wanted to cut the album a bit short. Freddie Mercury pretty much said “No I’m going to do this, watch!” Took a swig of liquor and in one shot just gave it his all.... that’s pretty freaking amazing to me and he should have been number one.

I followed Isaac Asimov very closely. When he died at 72 years old in "92 of a heart failure, I accepted that, even though there were some tragic frightening moments. In his book GOLD in 2002, his wife and daughter let the world know the truth. I was a little upset that Asimov, the great explainer that he was, never let on about being HIV positive. His writing about the condition might have helped some other HIV positive people to get through the problem. I remember Magic Johnson speaking out about his own condition in 1992. I'm sure Johnson's activism helped many. RIP Isaac.

Anthony Perkins (April 4, 1932 - September 12, 1992) For those too young to remember him, he was an American actor and singer. He was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his second film, Friendly Persuasion, but is best known for playing Norman Bates in Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho (1960) and its three sequels. His other films include Fear Strikes Out (1957), The Matchmaker (1958), On the Beach (1959), Tall Story (1960), The Trial (1962), Phaedra (1962), Five Miles to Midnight (1962), Pretty Poison (1968), Murder on the Orient Express (1974), Mahogany (1975), North Sea Hijack (1979), The Black Hole (1979), and Crimes of Passion (1984). Perkins died at his Los Angeles home on September 12, 1992, from AIDS-related pneumonia at age sixty.

For those too young to know, the understanding of HIV/AIDS unfolded over years. Since it produced various symptoms, it was quite a while before they were even linked together as one illness. It wasn't known whether it was viral or bacterial, and no one knew how it was spread. It had an incubation period of years, and there was no test to detect it. Medicine has made great strides now, but that took a long time and many, many people died while waiting, most of them young. It was horrific.

The celeb whose diagnosis surprised me most, was Amanda Blake. She starred on “Gunsmoke”, as girlfriend of Marshal Matt Dillon, and saloon owner, Miss Kitty. Apparently infected by bisexual boyfriend, or husband, she spoke angrily about her victimization before she succumbed to the horrendous disease. As a gay 69-year-old, I lost basically my whole circle of friends. As a RN, I watched helplessly as my patients wasted away. There is not an “out” surviving American gay man, in my age bracket, who hasn’t been affected by HIV-related PTSD.

I get so sick of reading and hearing comments about gay men are a waste because they are so good looking and no woman could have them. "He's so handsome! What a waste!" They're all tragic but the story which shocked me the most was what happened to ('Starsky') Paul Michael Glaser's family. In 1980, his wife Elizabeth contracted HIV from a tainted blood transfusion during child birth, which meant that their children Ariel (born 1980) & Jake (born 1984) were also born with the virus. Ariel died from AIDS when she was eight years old and then her mother also died from it in 1994. Glaser himself possesses a rare gene which saved him from contracting the virus and it was something that his son inherited. However, when Jake was 25, that resistance to the virus ebbed and he became seriously ill. To the point where his doctors told him that he either start taking the potentially toxic HIV combination medication or meet his maker. Thankfully, he responded well to the drugs, fully recovered and is now healthy.

Isaac Asimov is my all time favorite author. It is a travesty that he contracted HIV from a blood transfusion! To me he was one of the best science fiction writers of all time. He not only wrote fiction, but he also pushed science itself forward with his ideas on many aspects of it. He was a very smart man indeed. For me, he is missed.

buttforabrain In the sense that demographic wise... generally risk factor are much higher for intravenous drug users, people with highly diverse & frequent sexual activities, certain professions. Even blood transfusion are not that common, let alone due to heart operation. Half the list are entertainers that no one is really surprise. Sci-fi author just isn't a profession associated, nor was Asimov and his spouse known to sleep around. When you think Asimov, do you think sex or drugs? lol The fact that they manage to keep his true cause of death a secret for years points to that. In fact... I click on the clip precisely because of the thumbnail... that was really a surprise.

+BioCapsule I think the shock factor correlates with the fame of that particular person. Asimov is certainly well revered as a pioneer in science fiction but I'm sure most people would be able to identify who Eazy-E, Freddie Mercury and Magic Johnson are considering they are more modern and had a more direct impact on pop culture at the time.

The reason I believe that Magic was chosen over Freddie. Is because the list consist of most “shocking”. Most people assumed that Freddie was a Homosexual and also that he was sick due to his appearance during his final years. Now Magic on the other hand was more “shocking” because this is a MVP athlete , who looks good and is seen a lot on tv/in person (Freddie stayed away from the public, as much as he could during his final days.) so it was totally out of left field when Magic revealed that he had this horrible disease that sadly has taken the lives of many.

I think it's more likely that it's an American channel and Freddie was British and Magic Johnson was American. Simple as that. Kenny Everett was a major British DJ who died of it around the same time as Freddie Mercury but didn't even get an honourable mention here.
