Magic Keyboard vs Combo Touch - Which is Best?

I bought the magic keyboard initially. The build quality was top notch, but I just couldn't get over the one angle you were stuck with. I got the combo touch, and I liked it soo much better. I actually like the fabric on the combo touch, and still having protection with the keyboard made me feel much better when not connected to the keyboard.

Superbly done video! I’ve been using the Logitech Combo Touch on my 12.9” iPad Pro and I totally love it. Quick Pro Tip for Combo Touch: pressing the volume up + Lock button on the keyboard quickly does screenshot similar to pressing to power and volume up keys. This is something reviewers fail to mention.

I prefer Logitech as I often use the iPad to read as well as a replacement for my laptop. I do not like to handle my iPad without protection as is the case if I would want to use the iPad (in portrait mode) with/without Magic keyboard.

The main issue with the Combo Touch is durability, it starts to peeling around the corners and bending in the speakers cutouts, also, is very heavy. Already owned two of them.

Getting my I pad pro soon and I think I might just get the combo touch as I like having an extra bulk for protection as I tend to travel a lot with a backpack and from prior experience having a sturdy case will definitely help!

If you drop your iPad Pro it will most likely land on a corner or edge and it WILL crack the screen. Ask me how I know. I had the Apple smart folio cover and it offers zero protection. The Magic keyboard offers the same zero protection. Apple used to offer covers that at least covered the corners and edge. Ive had numerous iPads since the first one and never had any damage and go everywhere with it and have dropped one more than once. Never cracked one. One reason is the edges are protected. Same for my iPhones. A screen repair cost $700! Without a doubt I’m going with the Logitech. They look good , have more functionality, offer protection AND less expensive.

Great video ... As someone who has the first magic keyboard for my 2018 iPad Pro, I think when I go for the M1 iPad, I"ll grab the Logitech. I've found that the material on the magic keyboard does not age well - it's nearly impossible to keep clean and discolors quickly (smudges everywhere) - I literally hate everything about the material choice that apple uses on these keyboards. I will definitely miss the USB port on the keyboard though, as I often have it plugged in while also using the USB port on the iPad for peripherals.

I've been using the Combo Touch on mi iPad Pro 10,5" for the last 2 years and I can say it keeps clean easier than it looks. I mean, unless you lay it on a dirty surface, it keeps clean. For me, the size of the trackpad is very important because my hands are not too small. The only negative aspect is the fact that we need a hub in order to charge the iPad while we use an external disk. Anyway, there are hubs that solve this issue. Obviously, the price difference is very significant. Finally, I prefer to carry with 70 grams more weight and not to spend almost two times its price. Thus, the protection I get with the Logitech is not on the apple's keyboard. Good review, mate.

These devices really boil down to doing different things for different people. I have had both but prefer the combo if for the sole reason that I can flip it into draw mode, or just disconnect the ipad from the keyboard while still having the protective bumpers around the edges. But, this is also based on me 1) drawing, and 2) being rough with my ipad too often to be comfortable without the bumpers on the combo touch.

Something to note about the combo touch. Logitech makes a combo touch for the 9th gen ipad 10.2, where as you cannot get a magic keyboard for the 10.2 model.

Should also consider the use of Apple Pencil, which is the reason for many people buying iPad I have tried to use the magic keyboard with Apple Pencil for note taking and it sucks... because only one viewing angle is allowed for the Magic Keyboard and that angle is impossible to write. Some reviewers said flipping the iPad upside down, but the keyboard will actually block your view if you are on lecture I am looking forward to change to Logitech Combo Touch for better integration with Apple Pencil. The low view angle is perfect for drawing and note taking

I agree, the Magic Keyboard is more suited to typing than using it with the Pencil. You’d need to detach the iPad from it to use it comfortably. For anyone making lots of handwritten notes or doing lots of drawing, the Combo Touch would be the better option 👍🏻

I would choose the magic keyboard, but it is such a shame that if you take it off the iPad is naked and prone to scratching and damage. Some additional protection when you have to take handwritten notes would be nice. Like the MagSafe accessories having additional magnets for proper hold.

As you said it's all about how you use your iPad, I really wanted to buy the MK because its really beautifully made but I use my iPad 40% in a worksop and 60% at home, at the workshop I need protection and for me that's the main problem with the MK, I also draw and edit photos with apple pencil and the MK doesn't provide comfortable positions for that. I think the MK is meant for people that wants to use the iPad basically as they would use a laptop but then, why not buy MacBook Air ? I understand the iPad Pro as a device for people that wants laptop functionality but that is going to do something different like drawing, editing photos and stuff that involves the Apple Pencil. Some people uses iPad Pro M1 12.9 and its gorgeous screen for media, for that you don't need a Keyboard but with Apple products protection is a must and MK doesn't give that. I would've bought MK if it had an option to detach the iPad but with some protection like the Logi, like a fusion of both designs

I bought a surface pro 8 since I like the built in kickstand and was disappointed by how bad windows is to use on a touch screen. I returned the device after a week and went back to my 2018 iPad Pro. I tried to find a cheaper alternative to the Logitech case and I could not find a case that had the surface kickstand. I ended up buying the Logitech combo touch just for the case itself and rarely ever use the keyboard. I bought it since it protects the iPad, the surface kickstand, awesome build quality and If I want to use my iPad as a laptop all I have to do it attach the keyboard. This is so much nicer than the apple folio. I don’t have to deal with the a flap that covers the screen since the kickstand folds nicely into the case. I highly recommend. Just wish they made a version of the case that covers up the opening on the top for the Apple Pencil. I don’t have the pencil and I don’t want one. Now I’m left with a exposed area and it looks weird. That’s my only complaint.

I have the magic keyboard for my iPad Pro. I gotta be honest, I love the quality. I have small fingers, so the keys aren’t a problem. The only thing is you only have one angle which isn’t a huge problem for me.

I have used both and while the Magic Keyboard sort of feels more premium and has an extra port for charging but to me the Logitech is better, much more versatile

Great review - you caught some great usability details. Side note: “Logitech” is not pronounced like ‘logy,’ with a hard g, i.e. dull and sluggish, it’s pronounce like ‘logical,’ with a soft g, i.e. smart, and makes sense.

The Logitech case has a similar detachable keyboard to the Surface pro line. Which is good if you want to use the ipad as a tablet, it also has magnets so you can re-attach the keyboard to it and cover the screen.

Yeah, I think Logitech took a lot of inspiration from Microsoft when designing the Combo Touch. Down to the fabric material they used to covered it!

For my purposes, the Combo Touch is the clear winner. The inability to use view mode in the Magic Keyboard, as well as the lack of protection, are significant disadvantages for me. In my case, the additional charging port is unnecessary because I can charge the iPad via the dock. Lapability might be better on the Magic Keyboard for people who want to exercise this ergonomic torture for some reason.

Whilst I would buy the magic keyboard, the lack of side protection puts me off as I travel a lot and so on that basis alone, for me the Logitech is the winner

Unfortunately for my credit card, I think my solution is both of them. 🤷‍♂️🤨😆. I've been a Logitech fan for 20+ years, and wanted this Logitech for carrying back and forth to work, sitting on the couch, working in different locations (it's my laptop replacement for around the house), and using my iPad as a Photoshop graphics tablet (I'm a commercial photographer), BUT I love the extra height and the open ports of the Apple.

I have both the Magic Keyboard and the Logitech combo touch, I wish they made the Logitech case for the iPad a Smart Case so wee could use it on both the combo touch and swap it to the Magic Keyboard, I know it wouldn’t be in the best interest between apple and Logitech but its an idea! I do know they have a case that can be removed from the Magic Keyboard that covers the sides and top of iPad but the bottom isn’t due to the cylinder hinge at the bottom

I just got the magic keyboard on sale for 200 i like it so far but i was coming from smart folio keyboard so if you have that you are not missing much. This is a good case if you re mostly using iPad at a desk. If you move around a lot i would go with the smart folio keyboard if you can find a good deal or the low gee tech for extra protection.
