When Mat Collishaw was asked to build a winter installation in the V&A's cupola that presented the museum as a beacon of culture, he proposed a 3D zoetrope animation of moths dancing around a flame. This 'moth-on-the-wall' film follows the construction and installation of the piece in November and December 2010.
This winter's severe weather turned the Magic Lantern installation into something of a gruelling epic. The film shows Mat and an expert supporting team of builders, technicians and designers creating building and testing the giant zoetrope, while an army of painters set about painting and finishing the 104 moths it contains.
