Spice's short banter about Winged Beast as a type got me thinking, there's an alternate universe where Spice8Rack is a Yugituber and they have a 3-hour long video essay about the tri-types and the perceived racism between them. They're all basically the same, but segregated into different types by the power of ink bestowed upon each piece of cardboard

Love this, Spice8Rack is always entertaining, they definitely deserve 5/6 because the way the card templating is in MTG, activated effects on creatures are instant speed unless specified otherwise while in yugioh it is the opposite, sorcery speed unless specified otherwise

@@lydiasteinebendiksen4269 I agree, and I also prefer MtG. It is more intuitive that you creatures and spells only work during your own turn unless they specify they work during your opponent's turn. I just wished both had better way of indicating speed than just writing "(quick effect)" or "can only be used as a sorcery". Come on, use some symbols, people. You see that a lot of modern card games cut down a lot of actions outside your own turn because it's inherently confusing.

@@OatmealTheCrazyThe way I think about it, MtG's interaction is more free-form (the stack is just another zone, and you can keep adding/removing things to/from it, or modify things in it, while it does its thing) whereas YuGiOh is more rigidly structured (chains are built, then resolved. Priority always passes between players between steps rather than letting each player add multiple effects at a time). MtG's activated effects are equally free-form, being able to be placed on the stack at any time unless they say otherwise, and YuGiOh's activated effects are equally rigidly structured, requiring you to do things one at a time on your turn unless they say otherwise. Each is more intuitive than the other in the context of its own game. Each game picked the default that makes sense for it. (edit - typo, and made my wording consistent where I refer to past sentences)

In fairness it's less broken Maxx C. It's still Maxx C, but outside of its own archetype that thing seems very nice while also having a level of counterplay outside of "stop summoning". Plus it's only from deck and extra deck, so since graveyard isn't included you're probably drawing a decent bit less than Maxx C.
@Hambrack
@Hambrack Ай бұрын
@theendersmirk5851 I know, but that's the inspiration either way. The whole Mulcharmy archetype is basically Maxx "C" retrains. Still, if the question is whether or not the card is a staple, not broken, the answer is obvious.
@jamesruth100
@jamesruth100 Ай бұрын
I just wanna see what happens if/when Master Duel gets Fuwalos. Like, maxx c is at 3; will they let you run what is effectively 6 maxx c, or will they _finally_ squash the bug? Imagine hitting someone with both maxx c and fuwalos at the same time; sure, you have to put a bunch of cards back at the end of the turn, but you'd effectively be allowed to draw your entire deck in one turn, have nonstop interruption from every card you possibly have, get to keep a fair amount of cards in your hand (you have to randomly return, so you can't build your ideal hand, but who cares at that point), and then reset your deck so that you don't actually deck out (which is normally the only drawback to maxx c theoretically drawing every single card in your deck). It'd be utter madness and would surely be miserable to play, but I kinda wanna see the chaos at least once.

One thing that also makes Guardian Chimera good in decks that it can be played in, is that many monsters in fusion based decks have effects that trigger upon being used as material. So upon summoning Chimera it's not just that you get to draw/pop, you can trigger up to 3 other effects that also plus you. Branded Despia can legit add like 4-5 cards to hand depending on the material used and from where just from all the trigger effects.

Worth noting that while it's obviously correct that Guardian Chimera is good because it does a bunch of good things, one of the SPECIFIC good things that it does is not just that it destroys, but because it's non-targeted destruction, so it avoids targeting protection, which is normally a pretty decently strong type of protection, hence why it's so good that it has it. Like, Spice mentioned it essentially has Hexproof, it would be worth mentioning that its own destruction effect would ignore the Hexproof of other monsters because the specific wording doesn't target.

For anyone that disagrees with guardian chimera being a staple, I would argue that it's pretty much a staple in every fusion deck that can make it, sort of like access code for it's non targeting removal and ability to make use of useless cards in hand or field. Just because it's not played in yubel, tenpai or fiendsmith snake eyes doesn't mean it's not a staple. It has not been powercrept by another card and is played in branded, chimera and memento lists to this day.

it's kind of hard to judge guardian chimera objectively because at face/advantage value it's a -4 for +2-3 cards and 1-2 removals, but the thing is a lot of modern fus-ing cards are quick play, so that you can make it on your opponents turn or during the middle of your set up if they try to interrupt and then it turns into an objective plus that also puts the equivalent of a hexproof 7/7 out. Thats before getting into how it can cause a fat layer of triggered effects that make it even harder to interact with

Taylor, I think you're getting a lot better at these. Good choices all around, a lot of thought put into them. Still, I do have some small criticisms. Adding that Ash is good because it's archetype happens to be meta right now isn't quite the correct line of thinking. Meta archetypes come and go, what should really matter is if the functionality of the card is iron clad to be a staple, and since lower level monsters always get better free searches and summons, Ash is a fantastic starter/extender because of it. It's also been noted by many pros that Fuwalos does not go in every deck, as it's not quite as all encompassing as Maxx C is to fit into any deck (In the OCG they call this "taking a business trip", so Fuwa sees a lotta trips, but it's not quite the traveling salesmen the roach was). Those are pretty minor though, and I can see you've been taking the past criticism to heart, and it definitely shows. All of these choices were great, the staples are keystone cards, and all the stinkers are cards that you'd have to bend a deck backwards to make good. Great guest too, he was very nice. Don't know much about him, but I do know he's into lore stuff, so I hope you also got him in for a video on explaining Yu-Gi-Oh lore or something like that.

On the second iteration they added some clue cards to give additional context, maybe how they combo off of each other or a straight comparison of 2 similar effects. I think it's worth giving it a chance, maybe out of 6 clues you could slip in 1 bait like have Maxx C as the clue for Mulcharmy in this case and only tell the guest that Maxx C is banned if they sniffed it first

There _were_ pre-Advanced rules, it's the reason the format is called "Advanced", it's just an OCG only ruleset unless you found your way into the, slightly altered, mind you, fan-made format "Junior Journey".

magic player playing along, i was confident chimera was a staple because it sounded like instant speed interaction is a big deal and if that's the case getting the equivalent of hexproof from having the spell that you could use to summon it in your graveyard where it would be after you used it to summon the chimera, would be a pretty big deal. the other parts were obviously generally good but i mostly shelved those into "well yeah this is a big payoff monster i'm sure all of those have something along that power level"

In spice’s defense, I think staple is maybe pushing it for a card like guardian chimera that has relatively limited reach. Certainly decks that can fusion summon frequently at instant speed would play it, but I think it is fair to say that not even the majority of fusion decks play it.

I think you could mix it up once in a while. If you bring someone on for like the 3rd time or so you could have a "meta/rogue/stinker" bit where you introduce 3 archetypes of a generation and have them piece together which one was meta (or broke the meta), which was rogue at the time (whether or not it was meta in the past or future would have no bearing on the placement for the chosen generation) and stinker (saw casual play at best during that generation. Same restrictions as rogue apply here). You could deep dive into it if you want, or you could hold that info and trip them up by showing them the same archetype in a later video where it was placed differently (or maybe not? Gotta keep them on their toes after all)

I was listening to the Guardian Chimera as a Magic player and the card sounds like a Siege Rhino - not good enough *anymore* but a menace of a bygone era. Maybe I'm wrong, but that's just what it felt like to me looking at it.

the card is actually pretty good if the deck can use it, the main issue would be that not many decks can actually use it since only fusion focus decks can and many newer fusion archetype's fusion spell is unable to summon it by virtue of only being tailored to summon fusion monsters within the archetype and rarely anything outside of it so it hasnt seen much use recently but if a deck 'could' use it then it definitely would guardian chimera is probably most well known to be used in branded/albaz decks because of 1 of their fusion spells called branded in red that is a quick play so it can be used on opponent's turn turning that destruction effect into a disruption when the opponent would least expect it branded in red's effect is to return to the hand from grave any despia monster or specifically a monster called [fallen of albaz] and you can then fusion summon any lvl 8 or higher monster using monsters from either your hand and/or field (it doesnt have to include monsters you grabbed back either), the fact that it returns a despia/albaz to hand from grave preemptively means 1 of the requirements for guardian chimera is always live with it since it necessitates at least 1 monster from both location

23:04 Another thing to have brought up for Guardian’s staple status was its interaction with Super Polymerization, although you can lose the hex proof if regular polymerization isn’t in grave, you still get to scoop up 1 opponents monster as the 3rd material on top of the required. Albeit you do need to discard 1 for Super Poly’s cost.
@mauer1

you cant super poly guardian chimera because you have to use a material from your hand for guardian chimera. and super poly only lets you use materials from the field.

Interesting how so many cards say you can only use their effects once per turn even though there appears to be no way to have it trigger multiple times since they are ETB effects. And I had trouble seeing where one ability ends and others start, all Yu-Gi-Oh cards appear to have one long ability but now I think that in Yu-Gi-Oh, the full stop serves to separate abilities, similar to how paragraph endings work in Magic. Considering how sparingly Yu-Gi-Oh seems to use full stops, using semi-colons in their stead.
@YukiFubuki.
@YukiFubuki. 20 күн бұрын
semi colon and colons is already in use to separate the cost/requirements and the effects (some older cards prior to PSCT being implemented and still without a modern reprint lacks this though) yugioh does do soemthing to separate the effects in the text using numbered circles but… only in the ocg, Ive no idea why tcg decided to just remove them and leave it as a block of text the once per turn serves to restrict multiple copies rather then just itself though this only happens if the once per turn is prefixed/suffixed by the card’s name (referred to as a HARD once per turn) as it would then apply to all cards sharing its name used within the turn but all of these cards is shown without context because within context it can be possible to summon the exact same copy of a monster multiple times per turn to use its effect multiple times if it doesnt restrict by name (called a SOFT once per turn) if the deck is built to do that through trying to reuse the exact same card is harder then summoning a different copy of the same card so most are built for the latter instead of the former that being said most cards these days is a hard once per turn with soft once per turn being from older cards or cards deliberately made to be reused in that way like for an example ritual beast ulti-cannahawk a fusion monster summoned by banishing 2 ritual beast monster you control, it can search any ritual beast card on a (soft) once per turn and anotehr of its effects is to return itself to deck to summon 2 of your banished ritual beast monsters so it creates a loop with itself and the ritual beast monsters (which generally has effects to banish ritual beast cards) to summon it multiple times by just resummoning its banished materials and then using those material's own effect to fuel up the banish pile to do it again, the only restriction is that the ritual beast monsters used as materials can only be special summoned once per turn on a hard restriction so its not infinite but the goal is to try to get as many different ritual beast names into circulation to summon cannahawk multiple times to get its search effect to facilitate a gameplan

as an ex ygo player who now only plays mtg, am i correct in assuming for fuwalos if it's no longer in gy at end of turn (ie due to dd crow or something similar), are you no longer locked into keeping your best however many cards in hand? or do you still have to shuffle back?
@YukiFubuki.
@YukiFubuki. Ай бұрын
no, it doesnt need to remain in grave to resolve any of its effects, both effects is applied on activation so its not activating a 2nd effect if this is how you see it as but anyway it doesnt even need to hit the grave to resolve its anyway since its still legal to activate and resolve even if soemthing like dimension fissure or macro cosmos is active that makes it so all cards that goes to grave is banished instead

I am a lottle confused about Guardian Chimera being a staple. Sure I've seen it in a few Branded brews and Illusion decks but, as a huge fusion lover, I dont know if staple is the right description. I dont think it's a stinker but I would not say it's even close to the other staple cards in this video or the ones I remember from older videos. I absolutely could be wrong. Someone feel free to let me know I'm crazy.
@CaptainMarvel4Ever
@CaptainMarvel4Ever Ай бұрын
Well, calling those other cards stinkers is also a bit disingenuous, because if you build your deck a specific way they slot in just fine. Thing is though that's a lot of work so as such we simplify it and call them stinkers. Can Chimera fit in every deck? no. Can it fit in every fusion based deck? no. If it can fit in with a deck is it a staple and is that deck probably good? absolutely. It's also a card with great future proofing and past performance. Keep in mind this is about reviewing cards, so analyzing it as either a good or a bad card is key, and standing alone, drawing, destruction, and protection while being somewhat genetic is staple material.

Vagnawa is interesting, since realistically I have never seen it before now, and my only thought upon having seen it is "I don't think this card needs a once per turn, you synchro spam three of it out and it gets at max 5400 burn. Unless I'm forgetting a good synchro burn archetype that's garbage."
