On grave reaver there is another little upside...it is a zombie and a warrior...trigger or static effects that effected a warrior or a zombie triggers double..this is overseeing often...

Melira has also put in work in the recently rotated Alchemy 5 color legends decks, powered by Great Hall of the Citadel That deck could either win with a beatdown plan, or by going infinite with Boromir, Warden of the Tower + Ratadrabik of Urborg + Elas il-Kor Melira slots perfectly into that deck, as it's an efficiently statted creature that can also protect your combo pieces if need be

I really like the criteria for making these lists. It really reminds us that a cards value isn't in a vacuum. Fleeceman Lion and Watchwolf might be weaker than Bronzehide Lion, but Bronzehide Lion was in a standard where white was relatively weak and you generally were better off going either Gruul or Mono Green. (also that standard era was insane, omnath, uro, oko in precisely not that order.)

I’ve seen people play Albino Troll but the echo cost just seems too steep. I’ve played the 2/4 for 2 green creature with echo, the 4 on the back seems better than the ability to regen for 2, but I didn’t place in any tournaments with it!

I hope next time you make this listkeen-eyed curator makes the cut, it's got built in graveyard hate and can become a 7/7 with trample for as little as 2 extra mana (scene of the crime is great for this) although it will most likely take 3 cards unless you really build your deck around artifact lands and enchantment creatures

Weird that Hajar, loyal bodyguard isn't on the list and Melira is. He seems much better in the legends decks and in general. I guess the poison hate is much more relevant than I imagined.

The poison hate hasn't really been relevant; and on the face Hajar's abilities looks pretty much just strictly better (doesn't exile him, is a mass protect over a targeted protect) but Melira isn't just for protection, she's widely used as one of the best ways to rebuy ETBs (or other creatures sacrifice ability) in standard, a role Hajar doesn't do at all

Melira can save artifacts. For the 5c legends deck, Relic of Legends is/was a huge part of the engine and protecting it from a Boseiju is huge. For that specific deck at least, there weren’t particularly many ETBs to rebuy and Hajar had in fact been seeing use as an alternative protection tool.

@@JustSoggyBread Yea I just meant that part of the reason Melira has so many more points is that she saw play in multiple decks across Standard during her time to wrack up points because she was the premier re-buyer of Standard and a few decks wanted that over time; Hajar is only played in that one specific deck

I wonder if Zhur-Taa Goblin would have made the list or even qualify. Although it is technically not a 2 mana 3/3, it can be since it has Riot. With the card Break out, he can be a 2 mana 3/3 with haste as early as turn 2.

@5:27 Technically, she's not *strictly* better than Watchwolf; Since you can have multiple Watchwolves in play. I had this same conversation when my friend said Wrath of God is *strictly* better than Day of Judgement... I disagreed since if you are playing with creatures that regenerate and your opponent is not... Day of Judgement is actually "strictly better" than Wrath of God...

@@NizzahonMagic No, I was saying DOJ is "strictly better" for *you* (meaning better in your deck) if you are playing creatures with regeneration and your opponent is not... Under those circumstances; Day of Judgement is strictly better than Wrath of God (because you can DOJ to sweep their creatures, while regenerating your own)... With Wrath, you cannot.

By that definition a Primeval Titan is not strictly better than Claw Wurm, because your opponent could steal or kill and reanimate it with cards like Threaten, Ray of Command or Gilded Drake etc. Realistic play would be like your Titan is countered and then gets reanimated by the opponent, or a red aggro steals it and swing and fling for game. The term "strictly better" may be a misnomer but it usually refer to being better in most circumstances, not in specific scenarios that those "surplus" abilities could backfire.

In *both* examples I talked about, one card is actually better than the other (without) your opponent stealing your (better) card and killing you with it... 1) Legendary is not a "surplus ability"... In fact without support for legends... It's usually a downside. The legendary thing, makes playing four of a 2 drop relevant and a solid reason to not play four.... 2) If you run regeneration cards and your opponent doesn't... DOJ *is* strictly better than Wrath... As there's no downside for you and plenty of upside... 3) Your argument of saying a card that *is* strictly better than Craw Wurm (in this case Primeval Titan) isn't "strictly better"; Simply because it could be used against you... Is incorrect and actually just shows that Titan is better *regardless* of who controls it... That's not the case in my examples.

2 mana 3/3 is just so good even in 2024. The fact that it dodges cut down is so big right now. Also fight spells are so much cheaper (and better) now and having all the stats is so important with those compared to a 3/2 for example. Werewolf packleader drawing cards enabled the whole green aggro deck alone, but that card was a bit too much for standard imo, the new raccoon is much more fair but still powerful and it's even a possible sideboard card for decks that aren't really looking to aggro.

On account of the legendary tag, it's hard to call Glissa "strictly" better Watchwolf, since the inability to throw out 2 Glissa is something that still haunts Kibler in standard to this day. Fleecemane though it's hard to argue against. Card was indeed pushed.

Serra avenger... if a card on turn one an be cast to give Serra angel instant during turn 3 of your opponent ...instant effect so it could enter play since it's not YOUR 3rd turn

Turn 1 Aether Vial can also just put Serra Avenger on the battlefield on your own third turn. The trick is that Aether Vial doesn't cast the spell, it just puts the creature on the battlefield. Nothing's stopping that.
