The whole complexity thing is based on an incredibly unlikely combo that has to be intentionally made in a four-player game with extremely specific decks that would all be complete nonsense if you brought them to a tournament. @@stigmaoftherose 1. Card games cost money to play. Surprise Surprise. Hearthstone, Artifact, Gwent... all cost a certain investment if you're planning to play competitively. Compared to paper Magic, Arena is a fraction of the cost. Arena's F2P economy is on-par, if not better, than the alternative digital card games. 2. No, it's not "extremely P2W." When you first started out, the game gives you "New Player Protection" where they match you with players who have similar deck strength. That's why if you play a Starter deck given for free by Arena, you will mostly run into players with other Starter decks. This is called by the community as the Casual Queue or New Player Queue. Look it up. 3. There are multiple drafting formats in the game with Gold (the free currency). If you're decent you can get a good amount of cards + boosters + Gold and Gems (premium currency) back. It's drafting, so no, you don't get to complain about P2W in drafts. 4. They literally have an event where ALL cards are available to play so you can build whatever deck you want and only draft cards you like the most. 5. A cheap deck like Mono Red Aggro is a tier 1 deck that costs mostly Commons and Uncommons to make. You can definitely win with it even in competitive ladder ranking. Sites like MTG Goldfish has lists of budget decks for competitive play. If you are gonna talk shit on something, at least have facts to back yourself up. Don't make yourself look like an idiot.

When I was a kid with not much money, I'd make sure to be at the comic book store on launch day when one of the play testers showed up. Surprised you didn't talk about the little error with Indestructable Aura. Mark Poole, the artist for it, was asked to paint a metal bird, as in a bird made out of metal. He drew a guy with a bird head doing a pose you'd see at a metal concert. Another interesting little fact is how Birds of Paradise came around. The Alpha art of it was intended to be Volcanic Island, but the bird in the foreground was way more focused than the island so they WOTC opted to keep the artwork and use it for one of the best mana dorks in the game, Birds of Paradise.

Should've gone over more of the controversies surrounding it like parents calling it witchcraft or certain artists being racist (i.e. the card Invoke Prejudice). There's a lot of interesting MTG history to cover, which is just brushed past to cover the basics.

There's also a few mistranslations to Portuguese. The one I remember the most, and still laugh to this day, was Miren, the Moaning Well in Kamigawa. "Well" as in "you're doing well", when the card art clearly shows an actual well! :P I wonder if translators receive card art when translating text. It seems obvious, since it helps the translating procedure, but who knows!

I'm actually surprised you guys mentioned mistranslations in the game, but didn't mention the big one that actually could impact games. The card 'Ugin, the Spirit Dragon' has a second ability that reads "Exile each permanent with converted mana cost X or less that's one or more colors". However, the german version has a mistranslation that reads "Exile each permanent with converted mana cost X or MORE that's one or more colors" making it a strictly better (and busted) card.

MicroProse made a Magic game for Windows 95 back in 1997 and it's still the best Magic video game to this day. It's an actual RPG where players navigate a world map, do battle, collect and buy cards for their decks, and try to destroy the five wizards of Shandalar before they take over the land. More recent Magic video games have lacked inspiration, simply being the real-life game played against AI on the computer (and with unappealing graphics). There's a stupid amount more you can do when designing a video game if you have a massive library of cards to work with. Potential that was seen back in the '90s when the game only had its first few sets but clearly forgotten today. The craziest thing about that '90s MTG game is that the concept hasn't been done by anyone since so if you want that unique game design then you can only get it by going back. Not only is that extremely rare in modern gaming, but new Magic games are such an overdone game type (the digital card game) that adds nothing new to its real-life counterpart and directly competes with Blizzard's dominating masterpiece Hearthstone in the market. It's crazy that you can do a DYKG episode about Magic video games and not even mention the only noteworthy Magic video game. It's the only PC game I've spent the last 10 years playing alongside Hearthstone, Minecraft, Skyrim, and World of Warcraft. Those are industry giants that you want your game to hold up to.

My favorite idea I had was a Hive Mind + Last Wish deck, using Magosi to skip your turn. With this combo, you and every other player get one extra turn, but at the end of that turn, the player loses the game. You use the Magosi to skip that extra turn to bypass this. Idk if this play still works, but I think it’s funny. Of course, if you’re in a 3+ player game when this happens, everyone tries to kill you before the spells effect ends, so you have to be ready to defend too.
