Step 1: Attacker announces attacks Step 2: Defender announces blocks (or doesn't) Step 3: Post combat spell phase (so you can cast instants or things with flash for combat tricks) Step 4: Damage Resolves Step 5: Second mainphase (basically another turn to cast things) Step 6: Endstep (you end your turn its called endstep cuz it sounds fancy)

I'm simplifying here so I'm missing some of the more unusual rules out. These are some of the common misunderstandings I see when I'm teaching a new player how to play Magic... - You can only attack your opponent (not his creatures). - Your opponent decides whether to block or not, his creatures can block together, effectively ganging up on your attacker/s. - After you say who is attacking you both get a chance to cast instant spells. - Attacking creatures are tapped, which means if they survive combat they won't be able to defend you next turn. They're off getting up in your opponent's face! - After your opponent says who is blocking you both get a chance to cast instant spells. (If an attacker is blocked, and you kill the blocker with a spell before the fight itself, your guy is still classed as blocked and won't get his damage through to the player) - Any creature not blocked does damage to the target player. - Any attackers that were blocked have a fight with their blocker - they both deal damage equal to their strength to each other. If the total damage was more than their toughness, they die! There's a bunch of times you have to add extra rules in, but if you're just learning I hope that helps :)
