Xyris, the Writhing Storm is everything I love in a commander. I have been chatting about this card ever since it got previewed. It has reaffirmed for me everything I love about Commander and its community as we pick apart the strategies that can be built around this guy. I like to build decks that can go in several focused directions at once, which makes deck building pretty difficult. But with this I want to wheel, draw, ping, go wide, and mill all in the same deck. I'll use powerful engines that overlap with each other to ensure that not just one, but multiple strategies are working as I play. Very very excited! Also, the art is reminiscent of an older style that I attribute to Magic in the 90's. That was just icing on the cake for an older player like me :)

My most wanted card from ikoria is Genesis Ultimatum I have a Maelstrom Wanderer decks since 2012, its my favorite of all time and i have been waited for years that an temur ultimatum appears and now that wait has paidback Genesis ultimatum is an incredible addition with possibilities of been a finisher in a deck in which i can cast for free bc of cascade; best scenario: pay 8 mana cascade into spelljack, counter maelstrom and exile it, then u cascade into genesis ultimatum and all of a sudden not just you are able to rebuild you board instead you may be have now the board control with a probability of 5 permanents and will cast again maelstrom for free im totally in love

It's not as big of a deal as everyone makes it out to be. Yes, it's strong, but as we saw with for example Prime Speaker Vannifar from GRN, people gravitated away from the more obviously breakable commander, towards a more fair, grindy, battlecruis-y kind of commander (Teysa Karlov). I don't even hear the cEDH community complaining about him, they are more interested in Brallin and Flying Shark, or Cazur and Ukkima. It's a one-trick-poney, and I doubt that you'll be seeing him alot a few weeks after the set release.

In Simic as well? Whoever's in charge of designing Simic cards must have blackmail material on the balance team. Couldn't it at least have been Temur? Shards are in the set, red had the original mana doublers, even if it was still 2 CMC with hybrid mana it'd force commander players to stretch their colour identity to include it. Of course it'd be an even more broken commander, so... nvm.

@@steveng6721 actually, MaRo actually has very little influence on the grand designs of Magic. As the head designer he GUIDES magic's sets, very few of the cards are directly designed by him. So much so that he's able to make articles about the 10 or so cards he's made per set.

Rise of the Dark Realms gives you all of the creatures, so I’m not sure why that makes it worse, obviously getting non creatures is insane too, but Rise is pretty sweet

Rise is still good but it is worse than the ultimatum. Sure rise gets you creatures from everyone but you might not necessarily need those creatures and they might not help with your game plan while every artifact, enchantment, creature, and land in your own graveyard should synergize well together. Ultimatum can easily get you back a combo from the grave and win the game

Rise is a pretty good card, but Eerie Ultimatum is just insane. You can bring back lands and have mana up to protect your board, the professor mentioned you can bring back Doubling Season along with all your planeswalkers.

wmonohon oh I agree the Ultimatum is much better, but the way he phrased Rise made it seem like it was a downside it hits all graveyards, whereas that’s the part of it that’s better than Ultimatum. Eerie seems a lot better in most circumstances though, other than when your opponent has some very big spice in their yard for you to take

Ultimatum is good against all decks. Dark Realms is not very good against decks that dont rely heavily on creatures.

@@CalebDenn Not necessarily true, as ultimatum doesn't affect our opponent's graveyards so it doesn't matter whether they rely on creatures or not. And besides, my point here isn't to argue the validity of the spell. I'm critiquing Prof for not really arguing the case at all, saying it's better than dark realms because dark realms affects all graveyards doesn't really make sense and I was just saying I wish he'd made it's case better as it could reduce confusion in newer viewers. Essentially Prof's reasoning comes to "Ultimatum is better because that's what I think." Which again, is fine, I would've just liked to see some sound reasoning to explain why, it helps newer players get a better idea of why certain spells will be better than others. eg; His explanation of Back for more was very thorough and well explained.

Yea without a doubt Drannith Magistrate is the more powerful card, and also much worse for the commander format in general.Turning off the command zone? There's no possible way that card can remain legal considering the RC's philosophy on the commander banlist. At least I hope it gets banned. Now I have to ask everyone at casual tables every game if they're playing it or not until it gets banned, and in cEDH it's going to warp the format heavily toward the multi-colored good-stuff decks that don't need their commanders, even moreso than cEDH already is.

Eerie, Ruinous and Genesis Ultimatums are all pretty strong in the right circumstances (and Splendid is pretty bad by comparison), but Emergent is the broken outlier of the cycle. If any of them are a mistake level design, it's the BUG one.

Yeah. I see people talking about its downsides like "but you can only play monocolored" and "but your opponent gets to choose which one you don't get", but...there's enough crazy monocolored cards that you can play that will basically win you the game that I don't think that's a huge issue, and the second problem just requires having the thought process to get 3 cards that your opponent can't allow you to play, so they still have to give you two great cards. And if those downsides weren't there, it might as well just read "you win the game" in the textbox.

You don't win if it resolves, you have to still resolve the two choices your opponent chooses for you.

Those new tri-lands are pretty exciting. I wouldn't necessarily want to get them with a fetch land because they always enter tapped, but if there's any affect which searches for a non-basic land type that throws them in tapped anyway, then those lands are pretty nice mana fixing. And they have cycling so they're never a completely dead draw, even if the cycle cost is on the more expensive side.

After the set released I threw together a Nethroi deck with the cards I had, after throwing in all the mutate cards I could, having mana ramp with sakura tribe elder and such it's insane how well it goes. I went from 1 health in a 4 player match up to 77 hp 2 turns later, knocking out 2 players just from mutate effects and killing the last player by swinging it was amazing

I have a Zacama deck that I intentionally tuned down by forcing a Dinosaur tribal subtheme. I also have a Ruric Thar, the Unbowed deck that’s almost all creatures. This slots into both perfectly.

Rielle has me very excited - being able to double your wheels is a neat effect. Whirlwind of Thought and Song of Creation are just combo engines waiting to be utilized. Titan’s Nest is capable of going infinite, Offspring’s Revenge has a useful effect, and Death’s Oasis is just useful. I really like the three color enchantments. The other cards that peaked my attention were the crystals. Decent mana rocks that cycle late game always has great use

Parcelbeast is going into my zaxara deck immediately. I bounced Kinnan for it. I like that it's ramp and/or card draw. Though Kinnan may go back in eventually, it's just tough to find room for something that doesn't work well with X spell creatures.

I'm personally a big fan of Whirlwind of Thought for pretty much any Jeskai deck, and Yorion Sky Nomad in any flicker deck. They give so much advantage for their respective decks, it's nuts.

If I must pick one, I think I want Broodmoth for my Naya smashing face deck led by Samut. The deck's one true weakness is that if it gets wiped out one too many times then it will just run out of resources to rebuild with, so anything that mitigates that while doing other stuff in the meanwhile is always welcome.

The nice thing about the shark is while it isn't quite as good as mystic snake/frilled mystic, it gets the effect of pure counter on a body out of simic which is nice and 5 up front ain't bad either.. And very much looking forward to running out Quartzwood Crasher, and Stonehoof Chieftain onto the board in my Nikya all creatures deck and just letting the tidal waves of beef take over the board. And love Eerie ultimatum as well. Going to feel like Shared summons, where the drawback, isn't a draw back what so ever in a commander rule set.

Voracious Shark synergies well with Animar, Soul of Elements and since we are talking about Temur, if Rythm of the Wild is on play as well. Quartzwood Crasher is a possibility for people to make Beasts decks, since Advocate of the Beast can buff the Crasher and other Beasts.

Kinnan seems like a solid new cedh commander. I've never built a cedh deck (I mean the top 7 best commanders built specifically to win as fast as possible or stax a win out) having a commander that allows you to generate infinite mana and is a sink for the infinite mana as well is sooo good. You only need a way to turn the colorless into colored mana with something like a prismite. With the nut hand you can win turn 1 or two.

Since Eldrazi Titan's ability like Ulamog's is a trigger effect, not at replacement effect, Back for More could return Eldrazi titan to play the moment it goes to the graveyard from anywhere.

Simic has always been pushed and Wotc needs to take notice. Basically, at a casual table, if you aren't playing simic you are at a disadvantage right away. The access to ramp and mana doublers and card draw currently makes simic more powerful then any other combination. They don't need more ramp spells. They don't need more doublers. They sell sets so Wizards keeps printing them but they are actually homogenizing the format so everyone has to play those colors.

Hey Prof I love the video and I can't wait to get my hands on some of these cards but as I was watching I realized something we have the answer to this problem outside of just banning it and that answer is eminence. I know many people don't like it but the Eminence decks don't need your commander on the battlefield so without needing to cast it you get around the Magistrate

Yeah, Kinnan definitely looks to be super strong. Honestly I will be interested to see how much he directly impacts the format, but I really want to play him at some point as a commander. I know it might be a really strong one, but I have a group that plays 8-9 power commander all the time, so it will be interesting to see if this can go up to that level.

personally I'd add General's Enforcer as a honorable mention. Teysa is indestructible and the enforcer can create white token creatures for her ability while at the same time hosing my opponents graveyard. doing this is a little bit expensive but perhaps worth it if Anointed Procession is also on the battlefield.

4 mana all your spells have delve is nice, but also not that great. Compared to a simple mana rock like Thran Dynamo, you would have to use the ability at least 3 times per turn cycle to be worth it - Thran Dynamo also doesn't need cards in the yard and has no color requirements, yet it's not even that popular. Sure some decks can make use of this, but consider that most of the decks that fill their graveyard quickly actually want to use the cards in their yard, rather than exile them. If you could cast X-spells with it, It would be interesting in combo with something like Hermit Druid. As it is, it's allright, but not particularly powerful.

@@Isolanporzellator It is insanely strong. Its power is not giving you 3 mana per turn like Thran Dynamo, but potentially give you 10-20-30 mana at one turn when you play it, which leads to some extremely explosive turns. Plus, it has very nice card filtering addition on top of it.

@@Isolanporzellator that's a difference in opinion I guess but your comparing it to a ramp card that ceiling is make 3 mana till removed and my thinking is more of setup/combo card that can reduce spells by X. its easy to fill the yard with fetchlands and green ramp spells and would gladly delve most away to play a high impact spell with mana to protect it. and at worst its a surveil 1 each turn.So I guess it might not go in every deck but the Yidris deck i have lined up for will abuse the hell out of it. I even took out underworld breech for it as a testament of how strong it is.

​@@Zaalbarjedi Technically true, but you also need to actually get these cards in your graveyard first - 10 cards isn't hard, but 20-30 requires some serious self mill or a really drawn out game. Also if you need 10-20-30 mana to win, you're already playing in jank territory in which case sure, this card can easily work at that powerlevel. You just need to jump through a lot of hoops for a payoff that's way easier to achieve with other cards.

The new Vivien in my Ghalta, Primal Hunger will be something alright. Play Ghalta for cheap as I can, usually 4 , then fetch any creature that's cmc 11 or less. Seems pretty tasty.

For my Cat deck, I plan to use the Selesnya Companion as its chosen companion cause it is a tribal lord for the deck and a free extra card in hand.

I'mma get a bonder so I can build monolith mesmeric orb oracle with a dramatic scepter backup (Labman and Jace the Labman in tow). Fiend artisan might go in my b/g elf modern deck to make it more of an elf toolbox. Try 4-of, I'm thinking it's more of a 2-of in elves, though.

Honestly, I didn’t really catch just how many permanents you can return in commander with Eerie Ultimatum until you and some other content creators pointed it out - and yeah, wow, I am genuinely just blown away by the card now after seeing the possibilities with it! Would definitely be my number one pick for overall favorite card in Ikoria. And the artwork is phenomenal, which I’m a sucker for, so that’s like the cherry on top for me haha. Really good list, Professor! Definitely some amazing must-haves in commander!

Personally, I myself am excited about the mutate mechanic. They may not all be gold, but some of these mutate cards are outright solid. Brokkos Apex of Forever is certainly on my list as a solid piece. So abusable.

I know it's not from the Ikoria set, technically, but I like Manascape Refractor. It's an upgrade of good old Fellwar Stone and will see play in a ton of decks. Worst case, it is Temple of the False God, a Karoo land or a Ravnica bounce land, but without a restriction or downside. Even then, it is a strictly better Worn Powerstone. Rejoice if your opponent plays Lotus Field or Scorched Ruins - then it's almost on par with the most broken mana rocks in the game. And that's not even taking all the utility lands out there into account: Dust Bowl, Arch of Orazca, Volrath's Stronghold, Alchemist's Refuge, Gavony Township...

Kinnan was actually one of the cards I got from my Ikoria boosters... Now I can't decide whether to go for it an build around h or use him in another Simic deck (I have nome currently).... But the decks I've seen around him are super expensive. :/

Solemnity basically makes your creatures indestructible with luminous broodmoth, because solemnity prevents it from getting counters so unless they all get exiled they will simply come back

Obviously we see commander very differently but here’s my two cents for whoever bored enough to read this. First, Dranith Magistrate is bonkers, I don’t think it’s in any way broken nor should it deserve to be banned, much less as a GOOD CARD IN MONO WHITE but given the RC “philosophy”, I see it getting offed sooner rather than later. I’m playing it for sure in my Kraum Tymna deck. Second, the trilands are ok for budget player or something but in general tap lands are garbage, I think I only play Bojuka Bog in decks with Crop Rotation and that’s it. Third, Kinnan is fine in the 99 and not particularly better than Thrasios plus anything as the commander, he’s an outlet that need colored mana and does enable some of your mana dorks to go infinite with pemmin’s aura and freed from the real but that’s not much different from any double mana producer and the same auras in any 3-5 colored infinite mana outlet commander, like kenrith or whatever. In any case the two storm enchantments, Song of Creation and Whirlwind of Thought are muuuuuch stronger than anything else in this list, also the Emergent Ultimatum basically read, win the game in any way you want if this resolves. Also Titan’s Nest is crazy...

Emrakul and Maelstrom wanderer are great cards, but their cast abilities aren't triggered if you cheat them into play with Kinnan.
