"Every Pokemon is somebody's favorite" That is so true. I get annoyed when people throw shade when someone says their favorite is some legendary or pseudo-legendary, but everyone has their favorite and they are all equally legitimate. Dragonite is my all-time favorite, but Dewgong has a special place in my heart. Thanks for all the great content Prof.

This question needs be clarified when asked. Competitive battlers think you only like a mom for being broken, some fans think Mythics being normal game fav's isn't fair. The question should be who is fav pokemon based on Looks alone/combat/Event exclusive Mythics included. For me, Hitmonlee is my favorite mon. But battlewise it's clefable. IF I'm including Mythics, Celebi is my favorite but it always needs to be said with an asterisk (so I'm not excluding people who missed tthe last event for it). Missing an event mythic and seeing it for a year in battles sucks.

I used to play Pokemon competitively. The Pokemon company has a leg up on MTG in a couple of aspects. Having a code card in every physical product and the ability to trade packs and singles online without using real world money is miles ahead of Magic. Their tournament structure and pathway to world championships is much better than how WOTC does. However, the first time I played Commander, I was hooked on Magic.

Yea I've been saying this since I started playing mtg. The fact that wotc wants arena to be a huge part of the game and even the main platform for the game, they NEED to put code cards in packs and allow trading among players but wotc has dug a very deep greedy hole and for a while I thought the community wasn't with it.....but people still keep feeding into the anti consumer tactics they have employed more so in the last five years

@samhhhhh
@samhhhhh 2 жыл бұрын
@@vehicledestroyer People get scammed a lot, it's confusing for new players, it reduces profits for the company which in turn disincentivizes fixing problems and improving the client, not being able to get a card right away and having to go through the system for it, meta cards being unobtainably expensive, so on. I like trading for a number of reasons, and I've definitely benefited more than most from it, but it does have downsides for the playerbase as a whole. Also it's silly how much time I've spent trading rather than just playing the game, which isn't what it should be about. The crafting system is much more fair and reasonable for the average player, and will hopefully be more cost effective.

Hell, even a newer tcg youtuber like frosted karibou would be a better choice as she also knows boths sides of the tcg. Now this isn't to bash on Leonheart, he is an amazing person and if probably the best person you can pick when it comes to collecting but i would argue that for the actual game, he would certainly not be the best choice to put it bluntly.

So Pokemon Co. reprints one of the most sought after Charizard cards and the old version still commands a much higher price. This is also done in the comic book industry. Would have liked more conversation to highlight this & the contrast with the reserved list; these reprints are done in a TCG that is even more focused on collectors! Even more evidence that the reserved list is an obsolete relic based on superstition.

I don't want mtg to be like Pokemon. The reserved list keeps insanely op cards out of reach of the average player. The last thing I want is to be playing against Black Lotus, Ancestral Recall, and Moxen on a regular basis. And btw if wotc ever reprints the duals it will be in a secret lair that will probably end up costing more than the revised versions.

To correct Leon at about 12:06, Keiji Kinebuchi was the illustrator of the original energies. You can look at older prints to confirm this. They stopped crediting him in the Expedition era. He also did the illustration that we still see on the back of every North American Pokémon card since the beginning and lots of the earliest 3D Pokémon illustrations. Arita confirmed in a KZbin livestream that Kinebuchi has been deceased for some time. May he Rest In Peace and his contributions not be forgotten. ❤️

Anecdotal story relevant to 15:30 - When I was grade-school age, my aunt pushed hard to get us to stop playing Pokemon at home and at school. As a teacher myself in Norway, I have nothing but good things to say about how the Pokemon cards have bridged the gap between several students of all kinds who normally would never even have talked or played with each other. Sure, there is the occasional disagreement or conflict over a trade but that's where we as adults step in to guide them through the process to find common ground, just like any kind of after-school activity. Keep up the good work with these "crossover videos" and may I suggest covering Dragonball, Vanguard or Digimon next?

This brings back the feels. I was a Master Professor during the WotC era of Pokemon and helped staff the 2002 World Tournament in Seattle. What a blast to get my base set Charizard signed by Arita, and help over a thousand kids enjoy a great weekend. After the license went back to Nintendo, I decided to get out of the game to focus on Magic. I had a local judge that wanted to continue in my stead, so I gave him my whole collection of Pokemon (including judge promos, tournament kits, and everything you can imagine a top-end collector would have - All Neo4 Shiny pokemon, promos of all manner, and nearly complete sets from Base through Legendary). All except my Gengars. I had to keep my Gengars. For the love of the game, I let a small fortune in cards go to a good home where it would support a thriving community for years to come. Please do the same with your resources if you are able. Charity donations for facilities like NAMI go a long way to supporting those we love and help to create a better world for gaming.

Interesting conversation. Pokemon TCG, as a game, does have the stigma of collectors, being a huge chunk of the fanbase, that only want to open the cards and sell them later for profit, rather than play the cards and just "own" them. To be fair, Pokemon was so influential to millennials and the cash grab aspect or the simple "Have your cake" take on the collector's end has a huge thorn in the actual game's influence, especially when seen by other TCG audiences.

When I was a kid pretty much everyone in school had a bunch of random pokemon cards, but no one actually knew how to play the game, this was before we could just look it up online. So it was definitely more of a collectable for us back then. We did still play with them, but because we didn't know the rules we just made them up on the spot. Which of course led to horribly unbalanced games, but no one could call you out on your bs rules cause no one knew what the actual rules were. No joke, we didn't even know what energy was for, we just attacked for free. So energy cards were strictly collectables.

I really appreciate seeing the different TCG communities coming together to discuss various things. I love TCGs and tabletop gaming, I've played many TCGs and each has it's pros and cons. Despite some obvious flaws, I love the Pokemon TCG the most (I'm a control player). I'm actually taking my daughter to her first tournament in the Spring.

As one who has gotten back into Pokémon collecting this past year and has played magic for many years, it is so nice to see two of my favorite creators collaborating! Thank you both for what you do for the communities!! It is very interesting to see the differences in what makes cards have value. I do appreciate Pokémon for having basic versions of cards at reasonable prices (V, VMax, etc..) then having the “fancy” versions that can be more for the collectors. I think magic has gone a bit too far with things like the collector’s boosters leading to a dilution of the “fancy” versions of cards, in some cases making them cost less than the standard variant.

I loved the conversation about playing TCGs in Schools. As a teacher I love when I have something incommon with a student like playing Magic or Pokemon. And I find it is great for Math. The only thing you need to make sure as a teacher is Kids don't always know the value of cards so supervise the trades to make sure the students are trading same value cards and not ripping someone off.
@kyleellis9177
@kyleellis9177 2 жыл бұрын
But does a teacher have the right to stop trades and tell a kid what they want? My school had a teacher supervising the room at lunch and he was only allowed to look up prices when someone wanted to trade. Trades in the class had to be done that way, but once looked up, it was up to the kids. I knew my Foil magic cards to be worth more, but HATE foils. I made trades for cards I wanted and knew I was getting less value, so the kid didn't trade them to someone else while I was waiting to have something they wanted.

15 minutes in and two thoughts come to mind. It seems that way more modern Pokemon are being graded then really any other card game out there right now! The other is I think it would be amazing if the Pokemon company would Commission MTG artists to do the card artworks for at least one set!😃

@V2ULTRAKill 2 жыл бұрын
But those graded cards arent selling for prices that demand grading The reason is the people who get mtg and ygo cards graded for example actually learn enough about the game to know what cards are worth money even in loose near mint Whereas pokemon is flooded with pseudo investors who get 2 dollar cards graded not knowing what theyre worth

I remember pulling a foil Charizard from a set in either '99 or 2000. It wasn't the set with the first edition stamp or anything, but my little 6th grade brain almost melted from the excitement to even dare to bring it to school to show my friends. I say "dare," because our teachers were notorious for confiscating them and holding on to them until Friday afternoon of that week.

That was a pretty good conversation. It's been interesting seeing pokemon become more of a collectible than a game these last couple of years. The very first pack of pokemon I opened was the original base set, with a Blastoise on the package. Pulled a first edition Zapdos from that pack. Unfortunately got destroyed when my friends buddy got my cards covered in sweat from his hands and it stuck the foil of the Zapdos to the back of another card. That loss had me all kinds of upset. It was a awesome card to look at, even if I didn't know how to play the game back then.

Back in the day (Jungle and Fossil) I used to collect and play with my brothers veeeery casually. Like, we only got precons, never got any boosters or singles. Then one day I asked my mom to buy me a copy of Poliwrath because I had its pre evolutions and it was my favorite Pokemon back then, ended up building a deck with it, probably water/psychic. Then one day I brought my deck to cathecism school to show the other kids, they passed it around hand in hand and by the end of the class I realized my Poliwrath was missing

Although there may eventually have been many reasons, the school bans of Pokémon were originally not about the game. It was a matter of the kids being so obsessed it was disruptive. Cards (and later, game cartridges) would be stolen or fought over, or the kids would just be so hyper-focused on Pokémon they were oblivious to participating in school or interacting with anyone.

I really feel like I need to correct Leonhart on his comments about Pokemon cards being back in stock. He is right that it’s improving, but it’s also very location based. I see people on social media showing off restocks at their shops in more rural parts of the US, but many like me also still struggle in more populated city locations. For many of us, it still very much is a game of luck or *shudders at the thought* stalking vendors to be there at restocks or often than not you won’t find anything Pokemon related.
