They should have sold high on Bonham after last year and flipped him for a bat after we saw Grant show he could be a decent pitcher in the playoffs last year. League might have caught up to RJ a little bit too, you have to keep reinventing yourself and adding new wrinkles to stay dominant (Kracht's funky new deliveries, Robles leaning on the two-seam more)

I still totally believe in the Magic and their chances to repeat this year, but holy crap Jack and AJ have to be better if they wanna have any shot at all. Grant and RJ can't carry this team by themselves. Right now on the season, Jack and AJ are a combined 0 for 28 with 11 walks. Jack is 0 for 14 with 9 walks for a 0.391 OPS, and AJ is 0 for 14 with 2 walks for a 0.125 OPS. The fact that we're 9 games into the season makes that one of the crazier cold stretches I've ever seen from two players on the same team. Until they sort their struggles out, their lineup should be Grant, Kurdi, Bonham, and then just one of Aigner/Ackerman. They shouldn't see the same lineup until they start hitting. It just makes it too hard on Grant. As for what will maybe fix it? I think both need to seriously cut their bat path and length significantly. Both take giant hacks, and when you're in a lineup with Grant, just get on base and be a threat man. You don't have to hit 5+ homers a year. Cut it down some and make contact/take walks.

On top of what I said here, Ackerman also needs to learn how to take a walk and not be such a free swinger. In 43 plate appearances the past two years, he has a grand total of 5 walks. Of players that had at least 20 PAs in 2023 he was dead last in the league by a wide margin with an 11.11% walk rate; next closest were Daniel Schultz and Rudy Ramirez at 12.8%. But a vast majority of players in the league had a walk rate between 15-25% last year. This year for AJ, its at 12.5% so far, which would be worst in the league if not for Jacob Pyshka at 12%, and then Tommy Coughlin's utterly bizarre start to the season where he has 24 plate appearances with only a single walk for a 4.2% walk rate (That's bizarre bc Tommy is usually amongst the better players in the league at drawing walks. He was at 25, 30, and 18 percent in the three seasons before this one).
