paul, i feel u on that game 1 flood. I swear every game i’ve played recently has had 12 lands in the top 20
@lockjaw0022 сағат бұрын
It was getting so bad I just stopped playing Bo1. I know there's not as many ways to filter through cards in this set, but I think I lost more games to screw/flood in the first 2 weeks than I did in the entirety of Duskmourne. I honestly feels like something is up with the shuffler in Bo1, because my winrate is almost 30% higher after switching to Bo3.

This is my average experience with Arena - on the draw, unkeepable hand with 4 lands of one color, and 3 expensive spells of another. Mulligan to six, keep three lands and some spells, then draw nothing but lands til I die. I've started documenting it, bc it is so common to my online experience, and bears no resemblance to any countertop magic I have ever played. Last week, I had three different games where I saw 11 lands and one spell after a keep six with three lands. It's why I dont pay to play the game - it stings to lose when I am unable to play and I'm just spending currency from daily quests, the notion of putting actual money into this slot machine of a game is absurd to me.
@popey7477 сағат бұрын
Ong brother I've had a similar experience it's ridiculous. Once I draw a land I know the next 4-5 cards will also be lands. Very strange, particularly in foundations draft

Wait... That bounce of the Squad Rallier on its trigger was actually such a cool line that I've never even considered
@Mitch_Feral19 сағат бұрын
Also, I think Fleeting shines in the UR tempo deck, bc it fires off all the Second Card Draw and prowess creatures on the cheap - and it blanks stuff like big spider letting you swing with impunity. But it seems to do almost nothing in a control shell, just bc of the sizes of this set's beatdown creatures, I always end up cycling it, rather than blowing people out.

Paul, I always appreciate how you take the floods and bad beats without being overly salty while still showing enough emotion to be relatable and human. The sign of a great content creator is producing videos that are still valuable even when their draft goes sideways. Thanks for making all of us feel seen out there.

Paul, you went 17 lands with that many cantrips? Daaaaang. Also, to y'all in the comments complaining about the "shuffler"; it's not that, it's that we have a hard time understanding that randomness means sometimes you'll get flooded out. Happens IRL too. Heck, the more Magic you play, the more it happens!

that flood was insane. I thought I had bad luck
@05xpeter21 сағат бұрын
I think this was bad luck for the most part. But you passed the 0/6 wall that surveils. It could have done so much work in your deck. In retrospect the lands distribution of 8-8 should probably have been 8-7 in blue's favor by cutting a land, because you have 3 one mana cantrips and no mana zinks, you should consider 16 lands. I looked at the 0/5 turtle and considered if it was playable, since i could work very well with the wrath.

You undervalue the trigger on the 2/2 deathtouch. In many cases it is "raid, scry 3 cards" in cases where you only need a specific few outs removal etc. As soon as you saw the 3/3 paladin with unicorn on board and bunch of cards in op hand you shouldve instantly recognized you need your wrath or lose.

@@bluejene2146 It's because you're speaking about variable ideas as absolutes. "You undervalue..." Maybe to you, but you can't be sure Paul doesn't share your priorities. @WPS57820 сағат бұрын
Unfortunately, UG sucks in this format. and Koma by itself is not enough, you have to pair it with the best UG cards of the format to make it work. Otherwise by time you cast it, your opponent has already overran you.
@daniduc19 сағат бұрын
I disagree that you couldn't have done much about the deck with the anthem - I think that firing the stab at the 3/1 was premature - it was just turn 2m you had a high life total, and the very next turn opponent casted the unicorn, that should have been stabbed instead. Obviously that doesn't mean you would have won _ but for sure would have had a better chance. (Obligatory - I'm a fan and enjoy very much your content - and congrats on qualifying for the arena championship!)
@haumph2 сағат бұрын
Stab really isn’t the kind of removal spell you sandbag. You fire it off if you don’t have other good options to preserve your life total. If it’s a hard removal spell like downfall or bake then I agree. In this instance I’m stabbing every time

Frank Karsten says for 40 card decks, you can cut a land once you have 3 cheap cantrips. By playing 3 cantrips you also have almost a full extra source of both colors. I would play 8 island, 7 swamp, 1 dismal backwater in this deck.

@@haumph this is quite interesting. I have an old "Duelist" magazine from when Ice Age was released, the set with the first cantrips. Strategic advice was "by playing with cantrips, you essentially have a reduced deck size, but also a reduced hand size." Rarely have seen this principle working so clearly like in this draft, almost 30 years later!
