@mjrauhal4 жыл бұрын
Probably a deepfaked (neural net generated) voice. Great idea. And yeah, probably digging the deck out was cut out, there were the seals and the decks seemed a bit glossy from afar, as if in plastic wrap. And I'm pretty sure he wouldn't have tried to sell non-wrapped decks to P&T. Don't know about any other possible cuts. The trick's all black magic to me anyway. But I wouldn't assume that they purposefully cut moves away. They might be just trying to cut a bit for time here and there and for a "better flow" according to someone's opinion. Even if so, moves may be collateral damage, of course. A well-deserved win, anyway.

What's incredible here is that it's probably (at least on the surface) the most simplest card trick you can perform: pick a card, put it back, shuffle the deck, produce it again. No gimmicks (probably not anyway), no spectacles, no massive effects. Just pick a card, put it back, shuffle, produce it. Penn and Teller must know every single way every invented that this simple trick can be done... and yet, this guy walked on, did the most simplest effect he could, right in front of their faces... and they still didn't get it. That there is truly amazing.

I can definitively answer the voice question (since I was involved in making it): it's as Penn said, an AI-based voice clone, not a human actor. I was sitting next to Penn's wife during this performance, and she said to me, "I'm his wife, I would know if it is Penn or not, and it's definitely him!" and then I proved to her that she was wrong...

Excellent analysis and an important "public service" announcement -- people need to be aware of this technology since deep-fake effects will become ever more convincing. The AI machine-learning technique involved -- namely "generative adversarial network" -- models what humans naturally do in the challenge-and-response "fine tuning" of just about any process, but thousands or millions of times faster. As you noted, Penn's wife acknowledged being deceived, so current state-of-the-art is already troubling, and in the near future will be able to easily pass off fiction as fact. The only possible defense will be another AI tuned to discern the deception -- leading to a race (or war) among algorithms.

G'day Jason, as a former TV producer who made over 5000 shows half of which were live to tape (primarily stand-up comedy, sketch, cabaret and yes, magic too, ) I can attest to TV stations demanding further cuts to completed shows. Sometimes these cuts were performed by the TV stations concerned, however often I would receive requests to trim shows by 1 to 2 minutes in length. So yes indeed any little part that didn't damage the entire performance was often removed. I suspect that CW does this as often the clips you use of Fool Us is different from those magicians use from the show. The magicians receiving longer versions with different camare angles being common. Happy to answe any questions you may have about TV productions and Fool Us in particular having listened to all Penn's broadcasts of Penns Sunday School where they have spoken about the trials of filming a 'Live' show. btw I also have 11 cats...!

So I guess it wasn't luck after all. That plus the fact that Penn's guess that Boris squared up the deck after he said the number is wrong leads me to believe that he might've performed a sleight of hand with his right hand when he pulled out the 3 cards to squeeze in the 2 of spades.

First of all that would be impossible because each person is in a different seat so by definition they each see something slightly different. Second, if what your saying was true they literally would have a camera person sitting in the seat in the audience filming from there and thats what we would see at home and i can promise that has never ever happened on this show. His _mode d'emploi_ , in this modest performance, reveals a cocky _raison d'etre_ which is lacking in the _repertoire_ of most magicians, including a _cachet_ which endeared Boris sufficiently to P&T AND with a pre-empted FOOLED US recording: a most _Galling_ but well anticipated winning _genre_ .

They have to do edits, remember it’s an hour long TV show. In order to make it an hour long with also adding commercials they have to do some kind of editing. So I would assume you not seeing him remove the jokers and advertisement cards out of a brand new deck probably was a good time for editing. I know Penn and Teller would’ve noticed that right away. We both know they would’ve said wait a second if it’s a new deck where is are jokers where are the advertisement cards. So like I said because you’re trying to squeeze everything into one hour along with commercials editing has to be done. But overall that was an amazing trick and I know as soon as Boris comes on their show. They’ll be saying you have to show us how you did that trick. Lol!

Is this acaab or is this puracaan
@Musikpunx4 жыл бұрын
My first thought on the card being at 3rd position was that one method to perform acaan is to control the selected card quite near the top of the deck, for example in 3rd position (!), then deal a small amount of cards for real (in this case 2), and then executing second-deals until you reach the chosen number. So Boris might have had the card in 3rd position to use this method and Penn just made the miracle happen by accident. By the way: Look at Teller´s facial impression at 9:43. Maybe he allready guessed what was coming up and why Boris´ joy and laughter were so real at this moment. Also at 10:30 and 10:35 : "Penn, you big dumb guy, how could you?" On the other hand this would have required Boris performing the second-deal right in front of P&T, if Penn chose any other number than 3, which probably would not have fooled them. But as we all could see Boris producing the card from 3rd position without slight of hand, I strongly believe, the card was in this position waiting to be poduced at any number by second-deal. After all even if P&T would not have been fooled, performing such a strong effect on this show would have increased Boris´reputaion anyway. Concerning the cellophane thing: I don´t care about it, because: Who could ever imagine, that Boris would use his creation on P&T?

I did notice the lack of cellophane... but I came to the same conclusion you did, that they cut out a little bit for time. If it was significant, I think P&T would have commented. I can imagine he had done a number of things PRIOR to Teller shuffling the second time. AFTER that, I didn't see anywhere he could have sneaked the card in, or moved the card around. Penn's choice of 3 seemed entirely free, and I saw no point where he could have moved or inserted a card after that point. In other words, I'm totally stumped... and I loved seeing Penn's reaction.

I'm in love with voice over and I hope other people copy the principle behind it. Having the routine itself explain how certain steps are ruling out other ways of doing the trick really enhanced the performance by letting someone with no magical knowledge appreciate the skill on display. I am never a fan of the performances that have a high level of technical skill and no way for the audience to appreciate what is being done and why it is special. This is a great way to handle that problem and to help magic as an artform by educating the public on how to appreciate it better in the process. I'm just really in love with that aspect of his patter. It's so brilliant and such a good way to handle the problem without belittling the audience. As for how he did it, there's off the shelf software that lets you do "deep fake" voice over. He probably used that. I don't see why he would do anything more complicated when "use a computer program" is an option.

Great stuff,Jason!I can think of a possible method-card controlled to top( despite denial) already happened by the time he said he wouldn't do it,then palm of top card, hand to Teller to be shuffled, then squared up while maintaining palm, after Penn has said the number he slides the cards off into his hand on top of his palmed card so wherever he stops in the deck his previously palmed card would be on the bottom of the cards he's counted off into his hand: in other words as soon as the counted off cards were squared in his hand that held the selected card you couldn't see which one was on the bottom of the cards counted off( if that makes any sense)That's just my first guess so now I'm going to watch it again and see Iv my suggested handling could work, mind you some of that could have been lost in those edits you spoke of; so I hope I haven't spoilt things by speaking out loud but not many people would read these comments unless especially interested in magic.Who knows? Thanks for featuring this stuff on your channel, making it more widely accessible.( by the way, I still struggle to get a clump free riffle shuffle, despite months of work, so I've decided to let it be for a while in case I'm reinforcing a bad technique by repetition, and hope to revisit these moves later when I hope to bring a fresh set of muscle memories into play and hopefully find an approach that slipped through the cracks a few months earlier and got buried , preventing me from making progress.I still have been unable to get any good decks to practise with because I can't buy online, but maybe that's a good thing too, allowing a leap forward possibly, when I finally do get some quality pressed cards.)Thank you Jason for your earlier encouragement and feedback and I have tried everything I can think of except to think that maybe I just want it too much and I'm so crap at these sorts of things that perhaps it was not meant to be and I should forget it and move on, but first I want to rule out lack of hard work ethic, negativity, and lack of tenacity, before throwing in the towel! I do find often ideas of magic come to me but I lack the actual skills to perform them like a songwriter who can't sing or play an instrument despite having prolific brainstorms!I've just had a new thought on a possible handling for boris's trick.Instead of controlling the card to the top after selection perhaps it was controlled to the bottom(maybe retained while Penn shuffled) and then after counting down to whatever number Penn chose it could be dealt off the bottom to appear instantly and supposedly at that location.

I just happened to watch this very video last night, having no TV but I knew the show was "on", so thought I'd check for a new video (had no idea about a hiatus since I don't watch TV-but weird lol timing 😶). The look on Penn's face was almost seemingly "disgust" with the voice overlay taking valuable time-like a HUGE eyeroll if he could. But the end, the look on his face was utterly priceless! Loved it. ❗😄👍❗

A good body language expert could have an interesting opinion on this. When Boris answered Penn about "squaring up the pack"-when people close their eyes when they answer a question-it could be a possible flag of deceit. When they shake their heads side to side (in a "no" fashion) while SAYING "yes"-that flag gets brighter(!) 😕. Right? 😐

I think there was a 1 in 52 chance of the trick fooling them. P+T followed whatever shenanigans you're talking about that were cut fro the show. The card was in 3rd place and we'd have had some more handling of the deck if he hadn't been so lucky. Boris' reaction when Penn chooses 3 says it all.
@JaapioNL4 жыл бұрын
I guess they also have to chop out parts because the show has to fit in a certain time slot. But how they determine what parts to cut...

they did cut a part of the show where he removed the jokers from the new deck, which I assume included him removing the cellophane too
@solitude2083 жыл бұрын
I honestly felt that Penn was going to stick with the number 3 because it’s his favorite card and wasn’t going to be “fooled” into deviating from that choice
@laartwork4 жыл бұрын
People need to chill about the cellophane and advertisement cards. Removal was edited out to speed up the performance. That isn't important for the trick.
@Robard659 ай бұрын
Penn and Teller were live on stage. They saw the parts that were cut out. If these segments would reveal anything, wouldn’t that mean that Penn and Teller could’ve figured out how the trick is done? If not, segments cut out couldn’t have been important.

Congratulations to Mr Wild! Taking Everything into account, it was very impressive! Well done! Aesop might be a little more subtle than you give credit. Seeds of reinforcement were planted. I would hypothesize most people would identify with the soldier who stayed to whoop up on the bad guy. His treatment of the soldier that ran away would allow that soldier to figure it out and not throw up defenses or hostilities.

I honestly think it was a force, the force being having Penn pick 3. Listen to the way he says, "With Penn having th-free choice" it's very similar to what Ricky Jay has done. Still floored how he got the card to the 3rd position.

Boris Wild’s “PURACAAN - Winner of 'TRICK OF THE YEAR' at TRICS 2017 - An extremely pure ACAAN effect designed for close-up conditions with a regular deck that can be borrowed and shuffled by the spectator. Any card and any number can be named. A version that will fool and amaze even the most knowledgeable spectators.” Although magic cafe forum seems divided on this. It seems he got a little lucky. As lucky as he could be.
@thesammyjenkinsexperience49964 жыл бұрын
It is Ideal Effect + PurACAAN + a minor miracle that had a 1 in 52 chance of happening. Let's just say that in the PurACAAN tutorial the position the selected card is moved to (where it then gets culled during the counting process and moved to the bottom of the counted cards when required) is the same number Penn chose. A marked deck is required for the Ideal Effect part.

@@thesammyjenkinsexperience4996 Is there a Plan B if the minor miracle doesn't happen?
@thesammyjenkinsexperience49964 жыл бұрын
@@JeffO- I just said what he does if the minor miracle doesn't happen. He has the chosen card in the number 3 position already. If the participant chooses, lets say, number 17. As he starts to count the the cards to 17, when he gets to card 3 he culls it, meaning he uses his fingers underneath the spread to pull the chosen card out of the spread and across to his right hand in a position where it stays lower than the rest of the counted cards. Once he gets to 17, he squares up the packet of cards that is now in his right hand, and the culled card ends up at the very bottom of the packet. So he is controlling the card from position 3 to whatever number position the participant calls out. And it's really a choice between 2 and 52. He asks the participant to pick another number if the choose 1. If they choose 2, he adds in a part to his routine where he does a very quick spread of the cards with some patter to the effect of "your card isn't any of these other cards" while he controls the card into the 2 position and then counts out. Position 3 is where he always puts the chosen card, it's his preferred position because it's easier for him to cull from there. He just got super, super lucky that Penn picked the number 3.

Maybe I watch too much Daniel Madison, but the way I would do this is steal the card before the second shuffle, while it's still at the bottom, then hold it in a gambler's cop and bottom deal it as the third card (or whatever number the spectator chose). If you watch the third card deal, it looks difficult but plausible, but idk you tell me :D
@bambulkomccloud39834 жыл бұрын
When he put all the decks on the table, some of them look very shiny, indicating that there was cellophane. You can also see that it's a Phoenix deck. Could it be that he just got extremely lucky? Penns favorite card is the 3 of clubs, so he probably likes the number 3. If Penn would have chosen a different number, the ending would be completely different.
@krasen.dimkow3 жыл бұрын
I think Boris moved the bottom card to the above half of the deck before Teller put his card. Still don't understand the rest. And I think that the trick would continue with something else if Penn said 10 for example, then Boris would continue with something else. I see there are other comments, where people think that he got lucky.

When Teller took the card and when he put it back, Boris touched it. Perhaps put some glue on it or so
@Finnishlivesteam4 жыл бұрын
Hi Jason, nice to find you back with reactions! My thoughts: The voice was computer-generated, using clips of his real voice. That is an easy thing to do nowadays. There were some strange cadences in the wording that suggested this. Regarding the trick itself, and the editing: As shown, it was "too perfect", which implies we didn't see everything. It's a pity that we don't see a continuous record of what actually happened. Then it might be possible for those of us who are either amateur or pro magicians to figure out what happened - we'd either know it, or would be just as amazed as Penn.

My guess Jason... He must have used glue or something to mark the card in the deck and with mindbogling precision and sleight of hand took out 2 of spades at 3rd position. Frankly, even after slowing down the video I could not catch any sleight of hand when he pulls out 3rd card from the deck. I wish I am wrong....... best card trick so far.

He gave away his reasoning in the first part--getting into the mind and watching their stuff over and over. Penn loves picking the number 3.

I think number 3 was subliminally forced on penn, holding the 3 fingers when asking penn to choose a number. But i think he had more to the trick what if penn said a bigger number, he would definitely use the slight of hand to move the card there. Also parts were cut like where he finds the marked card and controls it to 3rd spot.
@RoadSafetySLcom4 жыл бұрын
Answering your question at 5:05, it looks like the part where the foil was removed was also edited out. You can see that at the moment that he takes the cards out of the pack, there's a top card which looks like a joker or an advertising card. When he puts it on the table and spreads it, those cards are missing. Looks like a lot of editing has happened
@dracopalidine4 жыл бұрын
im glad someone else noticed the jokers there before the spread

You can also see the plastic on the decks when he dumps out the carton of cards with the light reflecting off the plastic from them and see the plastic. So they edited out him opening them and taking those cards out.
