I love Derren Brown. Him debunking some stuff makes people believe more in what he is doing and saying in other places, wether it's true or not. With him you are never sure if it is a trick or not and this makes him a great magician or illusionist in my opinion. He is not only fooling with his tricks but also with his persona. I think he explained this trick before. It's some sort of hypnosis and using keywords like "try to lift" instead of "lift the cup". So the word "try" already implies that it is not possible but you should try anyway (and fail).
@firstlast-sm6hx5 жыл бұрын
What's great there is that his explanations are further pseudoscience. If you read NLP books, the use of the word "try" is a big deal. "Try to lift your arm" the person psyches themselves out and they cant do it. And that probably works some of the time. What tells you that Darren Brown isn't using psychology, but tricks, is his consistency. If he was using psychology he would be successful some of the time and not all of the time. I agree with you that Brown is brilliant, as part of his act and persona he rattles off actual psychological principles and that makes him very convincing. But lets take sales for example. If you give a person a higher price and then lower it you have a much higher odd of a purchase than if you give a person a straight price. This is tried and true. However, in no world has any marketing guru or sales person managed a 100% sales rate. Derren Brown flourishes in his act a 100% sales rate. And only magic can do that.

saying "try" to lift is enough to make it impossible for people to lift their arm? i wish the world was that simple honestly. life would be much easier
@BunniMonster7 жыл бұрын
Derren is easily my favourite magician and as he always says "I'm always honest about my dishonesty". As somebody who has performed countless hypnotic inductions, I'd say this is a very clear demonstration of suggestion. Anybody who has learned hypnosis can have your arm floating above your head within 30 seconds to a minute, never mind a weak hand after a tonne of misinformation and prior knowledge of what he can do (And therefore, the inbuilt expectation that you will succumb to his suggestions) thrown at you. The vast majority of his act is pure, classical magic tricks disguised as psychological feats but every once in a while he does some genuine mindfuckery and he is a true master of it. By the way, I only managed to watch this video because I have a proxy running. For your videos that get blocked in certain countries (They usually won't show up in a search in that country) like the Got Talent ones you mentioned in another video, you could upload a couple of seconds long video with a link in the description to said blocked video so people can proxy their way onto it. It's a dirty workround and maybe more effort than it's worth but it's the only way I can think of.
@EduardTodor7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I thought so. Ah, interesting, I might just post the links on twitter for the ones that get blocked. Seems like the easiest way. Thank you for going through the trouble and watching this :)

I feel like I've missed some magic. Because I'm so familiar with things like hypnosis and cold reading principles. I dont think I could I ever be convinced that I couldn't do something like lift my arm. There's a mental block there for me. Maybe some people truly can be forced mentally to lift their arm above their head. I have no idea.

I don't know much about hypnotism and stuff but what I think is....maybe it's human psychology that the guy subconsciously does not want to let the crystal fall off his hand...because he finds it precious somewhere in his mind subconsciously. I would not have thought about it if he did not have kept his phone (or whatever it was) on his neck. It also makes him protect his phone subconsciously.

MY SPIN - Brown fragments your consciousness with simple words. In other words he breaks a chain of impulses that allows the brain to perform the simplest of tasks. (like tapping your head while rubbing your belly) . In music we call that "Independence" . Drummers or pianists can split a train of consciousness into 6 distinct paths. You practice this till you achieve "Muscle memory" . In other words you put every limb in auto pilot and let it roll. You do not THINK " Oh left hand hits a C# chord and right hand does an arpeggio (using terms for explanation) . The brain by passes any "Synopsis" (direct connection to any part of the body) The brain is also a “small-world” network, in which each part is only a few neural connections away from any other part: any local response is integrated into a global perception affecting the entire brain. A crystal "May" influence a Synopsis to the point you are so concentrated in holding a pencil, that other Synopses (like standing up) begin to demand more attention and your ability to hold a pencil becomes almost impossible. Brown may "poo-poo" crystals but somehow he can exert the same influence in your nerve system (he may just have a very high frequency generator in his jacket that makes the "victim" confused - THAT in fact si what a crystal vibration would do. Except Brown can tune those frequencies by dialing frequency X to any amplitude (power) he wants.

It's about authority and suggestibility. He definitely spent time finding the right subject who was open to suggestion. But most importantly the subject believes Derren is an authority figure when it comes debunking occult/psychic phenomenon. We use authority as a way to subconsciously make decisions without cognitive load, literally it's a way to arrive at a conclusion without actually thinking.

His Magic Props ! That should drive home the message ! :-))*

I totally know whatever Derren Brown was doing here... its not really Hypnosis (but probably part of it) it is called NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming), and using the power of Suggestion and Subconscious command (programming him that the crystal was reacting negatively on him and suggesting the crystal was getting "heavy" as he lifts the cup). The Crystal, cup, pencil, plate, and mobile phone are just mediums of suggestions. But Derren was undeniably GREAT on NLP/Hypnosis/Illusion/Showmanship and Suggestion

Eduard Todor I think they could control the strength of the electromagnet. So it seems easier sometimes and harder some other times. The pencil I can’t think of how he could achieve it. But I’m pretty sure it’s not hypnosis.
7 жыл бұрын
Eduard Todor electromagnet strength is highly tuneable, so the cup is completely possible. You start with weaker current, let him pick it up in the air. And then make it stronger. Actually it is even possible to make that cup levitate in the air on its own with an electromagnet.
@karlhammond9047 жыл бұрын
Hey guys, I'm no magician or anything but from a layman's perspective you could absolutely do the cup and bowl with magnetism. exactly right that the power of an electromagnet can be increased or dewcreased just like the volume on your TV. The pencil seemed alot harder to me as well cause you couldn't get a big enough magnet in it to have the desired effect. But when I watched it a second time it seems very obvious what he does. Notice he doesn't really let him take ANY control of tyhe pencil til Derren is ready. If you look how Derren is holding it, it would be so easy to gimmick the pencil with a little upside down T-bar or something he can grip to physically hold the pencil in place. Maybe its a bit of everything! Magnets, gimmicks and light suggestion all working together at once ;-)

Plus watch it again his hand was held in the position for a bit before trying to lift the cup try lifting something after your hand is held up for a minute then hold the coffee cup for 30 seconds then put anything on top of your hand you'll have the same effect. That's not how hypnosis works at all. I don't know how it's done but my guess would be an electromagnet.
@ronthompson9297 жыл бұрын
Actually that is how hypnosis works. It is the power of suggestion. Derren Brown is also an expert at Neuro-linguistic programming or NLP. You don't have to go through the induction technique of "You are feeling sleepy" for it to be hypnosis.
@bogdanbarbu3637 жыл бұрын
Ron Thompson you are stringing random things you have heard about into a seemingly coherent picture. Fist of all, NLP has been discredited scientifically (look it up) and Derren even goes to great lengths to expose this in his books (check it out). He might mention it during performances just as he does crystals in this video. He does so because people are naíve and will fall into the same trap you have (no offense). As for hypnosis, you can't make people not be able to pick up things, act like chickens, or pretty much any of the exaggerations seen in popular culture. Hypnosis looks a lot like sleep, patients under it can focus more intensely on specific things, and the types of things that can be suggested are more related to stimuli than anything else (e.g., you may tell them to imagine the smell of cheese vividly; you can't tell them not to be able to pick up things). Other than that, they are pretty aware and some can choose to come out of their state at will. Others might just fall asleep instead.
@ronthompson9297 жыл бұрын
Bogdan Barbu, I respectfully disagree with you. I have studied hypnosis in college (3 credits) and have been hypnotized and have hypnotized quite a few times. The psychological mind is made up of three parts, the ID, the Ego and the Super Ego. The ID is "fun" part of the brain and doesn't think logically. It is the part that acts impulsively, not realizing there might be consequences. The Ego is the "rational" part of the brain It can think deductively. It is often in conflict with the ID and tries to keep the ID in check. The Super Ego is the "moral compass." It prevents the ID and/or Ego from doing anything that might be wrong or dangerous. Hypnosis gets the Ego to take a "back seat" and allows the ID to become dominant. The Super Ego is still watching, though, so if the hypnotist is not able to get the subject to do anything that person would not do in an unhypnotized state, like kill someone or strip naked. The Super Ego will snap them out immediately, as will inappropriate touching. The ID believes anything it is told. Therefore, if the ID is told that a pencil, because it contains lead, is too heavy to hold or a crystal will cause weakness, the ID, not being able to rationalize reacts accordingly. So, yes, hypnosis can make you not be able to lift things. As for NLP, Derren Brown does use what appears to be a NLP technique in one of his videos. "Derren Brown vs Celebrities | TOP 5 TRICKS" in the third segment: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hqPPd3qGd5Wlpsk I understand it has been discredited, maybe what it is, is subliminal suggesting. I feel that the subject in Eduard's video was hypnotized using an information overload induction. He is given so many "facts" about crystals in such a short time that the Ego, cannot process them all and the ID takes over, while the Ego is trying to go through "fact checking." The ID really does think that the cup is heavier with the crystal on the back of his hand. Being an awkward position to try to lift the cup only adds to the proof that the cup is heavier. That makes it easier for the ID to believe the pencil is also heavy.
@bogdanbarbu3637 жыл бұрын
Ron Thompson I did not think you were being disrespectful at all. At any rate, this lifting business is a variation of a very old trick done by magicians. See kzbin.info/www/bejne/mYXVlIimZ5KBoKM for an example by Pen and Teller. I'm sure you will agree that the two men there are not under hypnosis. It's likely that a similar technique was used here. But regarding theories about how hypnosis works, as far as I know, there is no consensus in the scientific community so far. I do have a little bit of a background in neuroscience but it doesn't inform me much on this topic and I do not claim to be an expert in psychology either. (I'm really a software engineer.) I would not like to embarrass myself by making any claims about the different theories but perhaps other people more knowledgeable on the subject can contribute to our conversation. :)
@ronthompson9297 жыл бұрын
Bogdan Barbu it is sometimes hard to disagree without sounding like one is putting the other down. I just wanted you to know that I respect your ideas, even though, I think you are mistaken in certain aspects. I can't see how an electromagnet could be used to make the cup heavier. below the table was visible in many shots and an electromagnet couldn't have been used directly. I do believe that was hypnotic suggestion. However, I do agree with you as it comes to the cell phone and the plate of food. The plate was positioned right over the center of the table support, which could have held an electromagnet. The plate could have had a piece of metal glued on the bottom. It is conceivable that magnet could have been strong enough to make the cup heavier, if the cup also had a metal bottom. But that doesn't explain the pencil. Issy Simpson on AGT used a box with suction bottom and a pack of playing cards holding the suction mechanism in place. That is why she was able to move the box when she removed the cards. Penn & Teller probably used an electromagnet beneath the stage where the box was above. Don't know where Teller came from at the end, probably from off stage while the two guys took their seats.

He uses some corny facepaint, but his content is solid. I'm quite aggravated about the recent trend by "magicians" to release videos full of VFX instead of actual skill-based magic like how you start each video. What do you think? :-) youtube DOT com/watch?v=_dSp_f0f9gE

why do you shake your hands when you pasS? It looks much better when you gently riffle, watch Bill Kalush he doesn't even fuckin move at all
@EduardTodor7 жыл бұрын
+miamimagicians I've seen it. He does it with one card, it's not a full deck pass.
@miamimagicians6 жыл бұрын
Kalush doesn't move at all when he does the pass, in person the deck doesn't even make a noise. On the video he's passing about 4 cards.

Tsk! Surprised at you. No hypnosis or suggestion involved in these tricks. Derren doesn't claim to use psychic abilities (which do exist, but we won't argue), but he does pretend to use hypnosis, mind control, suggestion, NLP etc. I can assure you that everything he does is achieved through straightforward conjuring. Lior Suchard, on the other hand, does pretend to have psychic abilities, and thoroughly deserves to be debunked.

Eh, no, it wasn't. I know how these tricks were done, and it didn't involve hypnosis. But if you want to discuss hypnosis, feel free. It's a subject I happen to know a great deal about. In fact I gave my first stage demonstrations of hypnosis when I was seventeen, and I gave many hundreds of demonstrations of hypnosis over a 30-year period. I also ran courses in hypnosis for many years, and have used hypnosis in a forensic setting (as a memory enhancement technique). So, sorry to burst *your* bubble, but hypnosis was not involved in these tricks.

I don't believe in psychic abilities (even though I have experienced something extraordinary in my life) and do believe in hypnosis, however I do agree with you that hypnosis was not used here. It's something much simpler like electromagnetism. You can tell when they turn it off while he's trying to lift the plate. I do want to learn hypnosis though. I've never been able to find anyone that can actually teach it really well as a science and not some pseudo bs.

Coz of the bullshit.Hypnosis has its place in therapy,in the self-improving fields,but it has no place in magic.You and me both Know it doesent exist in this form,its just ppl on stages doing what magicians tell them for the fun of it.They're ot under any sugestion unwillingly,the are perfectly awaken,and just do shit.I never couzld understand why its even remotely interesting.I mean,to educated ppl.It can be interesting to ppl who believe that shit
