Both the tricks brown performed are variations on really cool mirror tricks. I know that you can do the one shown in the video with any round-ish object that lies reasonably flat on a surface (so coffee is a great candidate), that might also explain the suggestion to pick a different bean, if you pick one that's too flat on the round side it might now work. The one you described has a lot of popular variations and usually works with angled mirrors in the ceiling, but can also be done with cameras. It's a super popular method to cheat stuff like people picking an object, writing stuff, etc while the magician is away. If you know how large the tray is compared to your cel sheet it's not crazy hard. The difficult part is always looking at the mirror/screen discretely.
@maninalift11 ай бұрын
Derren does that distinctive action when he's "concentrating" or "not looking" of looking to one side and holding a flat hand up to the side of his head, which gives a great cover for leisurely peeking at something that is out of the view of the audience and hinding his eyes while he does so
@stuartmcconnachie11 ай бұрын
If there’s a bright light shining on the tray (not hard to arrange in a studio environment) then you can easily get an image of the locations of the beans “projected” via a mirror somewhere else in the room. Sort of like how you get a round spot reflected from your watch face and can angle it around in bright sunlight. Then just mark out the locations on the transparency placed over the reflected image. Much easier than looking at a screen and estimating positions. ;) Not sure about the single mistake. Perhaps it’s a ruse to move onto the second, less impressive, trick? Then you’re less suspicious as to why that trick wasn’t used in the final edit. Perhaps he’d used that illusion, or one similar to it, previously on the show and so didn’t want to repeat it?

the switcheroo of reactions is something the Derren Brown shows and David Blaine were absolutely prolific with. Every other shot was a switched reaction. It was also very clear that they shot the same "tricks" multiple times with varied participants and then picked out whoever responded the best. That is absolutely critical with mentalism & hypnotism type stuff as some people respond perfectly and others don't. It's actually a trait embedded into the core of the cognition for most of us to look around and follow others, especially those with perceived authorities for clues when we find ourselves suddenly In an unknown confusing & disorientating situation. Most of us are also conditioned to follow the expectations of the people and world around us. That's how most of the mentalism & hypnotism stuff works. A man with a suit tells you to sleep in front of an expectant audience and by golly you sleep. But the level at which people do it and how entertaining they are varies, especially in the derren brown shows where they were often on their own, blindfolded and such. So you really need to pick out the best performers and chop & splice reactions. You are lucky you weren't forced into something more ominous.
@jedsithor11 ай бұрын
I remember reading or hearing something about Blaine's levitation trick, where all he was doing was going up on one foot and from a certain angle it looked like he was levitating. Anyone watching from the right angle would give a genuine reaction but of course everyone else would just see him going up on one foot. He'd then shoot the trick with him being lifted so that both feet are off the ground and then intercut that footage with the genuine reactions from earlier.
@Lady-Seashell-Bikini8 ай бұрын
And this is why I enjoy his live performances more. If the trick doesn't work, he's still entertaining enough to keep the show flowing without feeling cheated. With TV, you kind of have to edit stuff because you don't have as large a crowd to choose the right participants.

So you're telling us that television shows are guilty of editing - not a grand revelation there. So they used a different facial reaction to that trick. At least they didn't alter the trick in editing. I don't appreciate his edited shows as much as his live stage shows. I've caught a few 'embellishments' on his edited shows that betray his supposed trickery - basically cheating the cheat. (The art gallery heist) It's clever if you can fool an audience through actual misdirection and suggestion, but doing it in editing isn't clever, it's just creating fictional entertainment.

Interesting to see the difference between what we see on the TV and what really happens. Him not allowing you to pick a bean at random, as is portrayed, changes everything. All it needs is a secret mark on it. Could easily be chipped or magnetic, allowing him to narrow down where it is trivially with a detector in his sleeve and then allow him to look for the little mark on it. I saw his live show and I remember thinking that whilst it was brilliant, it was nowhere near as astounding as the TV shows were....because they're tricking the viewer constantly as to what really happens.
@dalelc432 жыл бұрын
A magnet in your sleeve? Magic tricks aren't done with dumb luck, that has disaster written all over it. 🤣🤣 ... Just ignore the fact the bean flew into my sleeve, I um made it do that.... yes that's it.
@RaveyDavey2 жыл бұрын
@@dalelc43 Dale, you're literally laughing at your own inability to read properly LOL Read my comment again. I didn't say a magnet in your sleeve. I said a DETECTOR in your sleeve. They're electronic devices sold in magic shops and can detect a tiny magnet embedded in objects from a distance of some inches. They are commonly used in "guess which hand" tricks (something Derren was also famous for...co-incidentally) and used in far more subtle applications in mentalism. It would enable you to narrow down the area of the tray very significantly making it much easier to find the mark. Why do YOU think he made him use a bean that the production team supplied? I don't know if this is the method but it could be - certainly would explain the BS framing gestures he was using to find it. Point is, Derren forced James to use a specific bean for a reason and that reason is that the bean is easy to find. There is a ton of mentalism technology out there that make this sort of effect child's play.

For the first trick: note that everything is being filmed, because they are making a television programme, so when you scatter the beans, that is all filmed by the cameras. My first thought about the first trick was that they had a camera looking at the tray, projecting it onto the plastic in a way you couldn’t see, but Derren could. Then in the actual footage, they demonstrated they did have a camera looking at the tray the whole time at the exact angle they would need to do that.
@PBMS123 Жыл бұрын
yeah, it defniitely wasn't memory, to get the scale and angle correct of every bean would be impossible, no matter how good your memory is. They definitely had a screen in the floor or something, so that when you look through the plastic, it covers the plastic.

I gather Derren looked for the beans that were lying perfectly flat and face up. He only had to memorise those beans, which were probably only a few on the whole tray.. He then asked James to place his bean on the tray but obviously 'face up' so not to show the cross underneath. Derren only had to spot that bean.
@TheSometimeAfter11 ай бұрын
Actually Derren memorized the absence of everything that wasn't a bean. So when a bean turned up in the space he'd remembered was empty he instantly recognized there was a bean there.

It took my about 1 nanosecond to figure out the bean counting trick; 1 overhead camera (over the bean tray), 1 tv monitor hidden from view with the said camera feed (zoomed-in for a 1:1 scale), 1 clear plexi sheet to trace over the beans configuration. That's it, trick solved.

This would make sense, but he got it wrong. That is why they had to do the second trick.
@samw15014 жыл бұрын
@@kochevar99 maybe... Or maybe he deliberately got it wrong to justify the trick they actually wanted to film, knowing they would get an extra reaction to film. And knowing that a minor mistake makes it more convincing. Sounds kinda convoluted I know, bit isn't that to be expected? They have always gone to more trouble than you think they would.
@TheAlfsterino4 жыл бұрын
Exactly...although I only hinted at the method as it 'spoils the magic' for some people, and getting the first one wrong 'slightly' was a 'seller' for the second trick which has a totally different method - the way I would do it I'll not give away as it gives away a certain 'prop' used in many tricks like this one.

I remember seeing Derren perform at a magician's convention in London before he broke out with his first TV show - what he performed meant that for a few minutes, I experienced genuine wonder. There are a lot of magicians who are numb to that experience - a professional malaise that comes from learning the tricks of the trade - it was such a special moment to find myself wondering if he was 'the real thing'! A great performer and Andy is a creative powerforce too.

I feel like the "trick" is Derren Brown just has a picture-perfect photographic memory, kindof like Marilu Henner, but unlike her he just doesn't trumpet it around. The "chess master" trick convinced me this is the case. Anyone who can remember six to eight different board states simultaneously while also actively playing those board states definitely has powers of recollection that are far beyond normal people.
@stupidas946611 ай бұрын
Either you're correct and he has a memory like no other on the planet like you propose, or he does a magic trick that most capable magicians can easily do once they are made aware or figure out the method used. Hmm, which is more likely, you got fooled by a magic trick because you are unfamiliar with the process, or someone really is "magic”.
@NeonPixels8111 ай бұрын
@@stupidas9466 I didn't suggest he was "magic", and there are people with literally picture perfect memories. Not sure what you're disagreeing with here.

Of course he cheated it, that is what Derren Brown is all about. That's his point, it's not magic, it's a trick. As for cutting in a different reaction, well that's television, why wouldn't you use the best shot you've got?
@grandarchon69694 жыл бұрын
the only time it's unethical is when they ask a question to an interviewee, and then put the response to a different question in. Often, making the interviewee shown in a negative way. Usually this happens when the corporate press interview political people, usually their opposition.

I think the way I'd do the first trick, is I'd build a special "clipboard" for making my marks, and the clipboard would be an Ipad showing the tray, photographed from above - then all I need to do is draw around every bean on the ipad. The tray was about the same size as an ipad after all. For the second trick, it sort of looks like he's looking down at something that's out of shot, and maybe not visible to you. If he has a live video feed of what you're doing from above, that you can't see, all he has to do is watch you place the bean, and then he knows where it is.

I'm curious now. Why not set-up the second trick yourself at home and see if you can actually do it? Would make for a good video either way! :)

Method for the first trick that they didn't show: since they were filming the beans on the tray that they just took a screenshot of their position from the video feed, printed it out and put it on the clipboard before handing it to Derren. Then he just quickly traced the printout.

Thanks for posting this. Your experience correlates with another trick he did at an advertising agency where I used to work. I wasn't in it but I knew the guys who were. When I spoke to them they stated that the sequence of events was heavily edited in Derren's favor to make it look like more of a trick. I do like Derren Brown and I like his tricks, but it became more obvious to me how a lot of the "tricks" are done and how they come out in the edit.

It can be said, that Darren didn’t necessarily had to remember the position of all beans. With the right colour contrast and light settings, the image reappears in your retina for a few seconds. You just need to look at something with high contrast for a while (10 s) and then look at a surface with the negative colour of what you just saw. The image can get very clear. Then quickly draw what you see and off you go.

A potential way the first trick was carried out is as follows assuming two things: The location of the metal tray was predetermined You did not get chance to inspect the area where Derren was drawing the location of the coffee beans at the time he was doing the drawing (any point where you cannot directly scrutinize the magician is suspect) The tray could have been doctored or a heat sensitive camera could have been looking at the tray in such a way that heat differences could be detected between the material of the tray and the coffee beans. This image or heat map was sent to the Magician's location and displayed either by very faint projector or a concealed screen or possibly upwards on to the surface he was drawing on so he could effectively trace the coffee bean locations. An artefact on the tray or the area where he was drawing could therefore account for the extra bean in the drawing. This is how I would do it. No way to be certain but it's not a terribly difficult trick.
@yinoveryang424611 ай бұрын
Yes that's how it was done, faint projector or something. A Straightforward camera shot of the beans from above is my guess. They had prepped the location, even though it may have seemed deliberately very random, with psychological tricks to unsettle him.

@@Romanplaystation could be the one yeah. Basically he was demonstrating how he could get a guy to place a playing card into a box and not remember doing it. Then eventually Derren himself took a card across the stage to put it into a box while counting to five. Most of the audience then didn't remember it happening. All I remember is hearing Derren count, "1, 2... 5". Then at the end of the show he showed the video of him moving across the stage while counting 3 and 4 but I had no memory of it at all!
