Love it when they Call me Big I honestly can’t tell if you are joking or not but if you aren’t, I don’t believe this was a set up. The guy knew he would be called by his friend for a trick, he just didn’t know the exact time so of course he was dressed nice in preparation for it. We didn’t see much of what teller was doing but my guess is that every card said the same thing. Teller could have switched the envelopes by offering to hold her envelope for her while she was writing and just switch it then. You can actually see that she isn’t holding her envelope while she writes her name. And lastly if she thought that everyone was trying to fool mat then of course she would flip it back around as to not ruin the trick.

How about Teller simply swapping her envelope? Like he "holds" it while she writes her name?
@xdragon2k4 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure that's what happened. She wasn't holding the envelope when she wrote her name in that paper. Just a pen and the cap. If they "really knows" what the card is, everyone will have that same card inside their envelope. It's easier to just swap one envelope than 52.
@ProuvaireJean4 жыл бұрын
Yup, 99% sure that's however it was done as there was no reason for her to write down her name other than to allow Teller to switch envelopes. I was actually expecting all the other envelopes to also contain the chosen card, which would have been mind blowing.

@Love it when they Call me Big Papa lol simmer down guy. Everyone was given an envelope with a different card on the outside and the "this is not the chosen card..." note inside. But the card was chosen before he wrote her name and the outside of the envelope also said 8 of diamonds or whatever she had. So if the envelope was swapped she would notice the card wasn’t the same as what was on the outside of the envelope. This is perplexing. The force had to come at the beginning because by the time she had the card it was too late for a switch or anything. She was given the envelope then Matt picked a card
@notme2224 жыл бұрын
@@professorzoom7800 They still had 52 envelopes and 52 volunteers. No force. 1) Each envelope has a suit & rank indicated on the outside, and on the inside has the "P&T fooled us" card. 2) When the called person chooses a card, everyone with the wrong envelope sits down. The person standing has the "right" envelope with the fakeout card inside. 3) Using an index, Teller loads a replacement. It also has the right symbol on the outside but this one has the right card inside. 4) While the standing person writes their name Teller swaps the envelopes. 5) Now the standing person has the chosen card inside the chosen envelope, while the other 51 people have fakeout cards inside the unchosen envelopes.

I like this trick - it's so simple. Enough others have said how it must have been done. But how they give it away in the very name of the trick and go about pointing out how they're doing it in their patter is great. It'll fool casual audiences who want to be fooled but is a great introduction to magic and what audiences will believe to anyone who thinks about how it was done. It's as much a magic tutorial as a trick.

@ i cant see the envelop... though for sure, Karen is not holding one that time so she probably hand it over to teller and teller had it switched.
@DL-kc8fc4 жыл бұрын
@@dro7000 Of course, this is the main principle of the trick. The name "Karen" is only for the occupation of the audience, because no card in the audience contains the name Karen in the text, but a text that says "this is not a selected card. Wow ...". Any name was only used by Teller to exchange the envelope when he offered it gentlemanly to hold the envelope while writing the name on paper. The name itself, such as "Karen", has no function in the trick. The man on the cell phone could choose any card. The spectator could be any and could have any name. Again, it was Penn's psychology of the "illusion of presence" when he concluded that only Karen had the right card, which created the illusion that the name "Karen" played a key role in the identification. Try it at home. I was surprised by Mr. Jason Parker, who was thinking about many variants of double envelopes, or turning the envelope of Karen (she was asked to increase the tension of detection) ... Mr. Parker was simply fooled by a very simple trick, which does not require any effort from the magician's side - just a simple exchange of one envelope and many unimportant speeches around it. It's just magic.

The easiest way I can think to do the trick would be to have the guy on the phone in on it, but I guess Teller could have also changed the card in the envelope when she is writing her name. In a room close by, out of view, an assistant has a marker, the board, and 52 real cards in their respective envelopes. As soon as the assistant hears the name of the card, he picks it, holds it under the board, comes out and hands it to Tellar, who has moved close to their 'rendezvous point'. We can't see it but it would have looked perfectly reasonable to the audience for an assistant to hand him the board and marker. But they would be focused on Penn misdirecting them anyway. Tellar then takes her envelope so she can write her name. He does the switch, then hands her back the envelope with the 8D, all under cover of the board. Hence the reason she is instructed to write her name on the board, and not just say it out loud.

Teller is an absolute master of slight of hand. I think the simplest way for the trick to work is teller has all 52 cards in envelopes hidden on him, and all 52 audience members get the cards with words. while the person signs their name, teller swaps their envelop for the one with the actual card on it. or even more simply, a stage hand has all the hidden cards, and just gives the right one to teller the instant the guy on screen says his guess. its impossible to tell because of the editing though, but i think that's the simplest way. i generally really don't like tricks with multiple outs because they feel kind of lame, but leave it to P&T to do a trick with multiple outs that is really interesting

Lovely trick by the guys :-) Possible spoiler: All envelopes would have had the same card in with the writing on. Magnificent misdirection by Penn with the chit chat about where the guy is etc. while Teller is getting Karen to write her name on the board... but between then and when the guy on the phone named the card either a stage hand quickly selected the duplicate envelope with the card he named in and attached it to the back of the board for Karen to sign and hands the board to Teller, or Teller had an index on him in his jacket so he could pull out the correct envelope, then once either of those options are done Teller then swaps out Karen's envelope for the duplicate with the actual card in. If you're real quick and you watch a split second on the video at 4:09 - 4:10 you can see Teller pull the envelope from behind the board. Nobody involved was a stooge, the guy on the phone knew he was going to get a video call from Penn but that's all, nothing else, hence why he was dressed smart. So the guy could have named any card. Just my thoughts. And I also discovered writing this I can't spell envelope, so thank you google chrome spell check for the assistance! ;-)

For those agreeing with Jason and saying that Teller switched out the card - I'm sure you're right but my guess is that there's a third person involved in the trick. Don't forget that Teller has to get access to that exact card to match the envelope. Teller switching the envelope is a possibility. But I tend to something more tricky. A double bluff. We just take it for granted, that the guy chosen to be on the phone is not informed. But why? P&T show us, how magicians set up things for the effect. I want to believe they did this on purpose to hint towards the spectators being the aim of the effect from the beginning. It's not difficult at all to tell that person on the phone in advance which "card" to pick. The rest is then unfolding perfectly fine with no sneaky handling necessary. BTW, the name was written down so that Penn could read and say her name, when he went to her. That doesn't exclude the card switching possibility, but it has a solid purpose.

@davidgould94314 жыл бұрын
Everyone thinks there was an envelope switch, and who am I to argue? Answer: no-one. To me, the obvious way to do the trick is to call the guy beforehand and just run the recording of him while Penn does his half of the conversation. That way, they know the answer and can load all the envelopes before handing them out. The bit with Karen writing her name might be: a) as another commenter said, so Teller can get the name to Penn without speaking; b) maybe where some sort of switch happened (we don't have the footage to tell); or c) a misdirection to make us all suspect a switch. We only get to see the front of the phone once (IIRC) and it struck me as very static, so might have been a still from the call - but was very brief, too, so not a lot of data there, except it just felt very odd when I saw it. Maybe I'm paranoid. As has been pointed out, these sorts of tricks would probably not be available to contestants but this is P&T's show and they can do (as they said way back in Series 1) whatever the hell they want. Quoted by the 1st fooler when asked whether they could examine his envelopes, if I recall correctly.

I'm pretty sure the justification for the chosen person two write their name instead of whispering it to Teller is to be able to get Penn to know it without Teller having to talk to him. Because that would be a little obvious for the person on the phone, right? It's also a great thing to hide the switch of the card (which I think is what actually happened). c:

I’d build the euthanasia roller coaster. Basically a giant roller coaster that has loops that get smaller and smaller until the gforces are enough to take anyone’s life. Designs for it already exist and I think if someone wants to go out with a bang they should have the option. Even if it ends up being illegal to ride, it’d still be a marvel to see.

You're great, Jason! Hey everyone, I've designed an effect where the design does all of the work, except I need to do a switch on a pea sized item... and I'm really awkward with it. Can anyone recommend a vid or a search term for me to study so I can finalize this trick? Thanks, everyone.
@thefancystache37934 жыл бұрын
@alphadawn2015 lennon I've seen it and it's GREAT! But if he does a hand switch with that pea, I certainly didn't catch it. Perhaps I'll watch again and see if I can pick anything up. I know the shell moves he does... buy that's WAY beyond my ability, lol. I'm thinking a hand switch should be easy, but I chunk the move half of the time. I need a technique an amateur can pull off every time

I'd probably build a house, although my dream house is gonna cost more than that. When she's signing the paper really does look like the only time anything could have happened. [insert "karen" joke here] Fable seems pretty straight-forward. I guess I could add "Be aware of your situation" as a moral.

Yep, there’s no necessity for her to write her name out like that, except because the trick depend on both her hands being too busy to hold an envelope for a few moments

I think your guess seems to be the only thing I could think of as well. Everyone started with the Fooled Us card and Teller swapped with Karen from an index. You can see when she is writing she does not have her envelope in her hand. Everything in an act serves a purpose. You have to ask why did she have to write her name in the first place? Penn could of easily said we selected a person in the crowd to hold an envelope then asked for her name when addressing her. The writing served a purpose and a swap is the only reasonable answer.

If you go frame by frame at 4:09, right before the shot changes back to Penn, you can see Teller has the envelope in his right hand underneath the pad of paper.

Yeah, why would she need to write her own name down. But very curious whether she handed teller the card while she wrote, or he lifted off her.

Like most people I was not expecting that ending. I figured they were going to do a trick solely for the guy on the phone, who answered in the most awkward location in his house. I think your guess about master slight of hand probably was the solution. But I don't really care. It was a fun trick even if I don't know how it's done.

@@billyjeffersoniv4344 haha thanks... well I don't even know if a PO Box in Ukraine is possible... maybe I should ask. I do know I can receive packages easily if they are sent to Nova Poshta. They hold them for me to come get. novaposhta.ua But... good luck understanding that website 😂 I think even if you use Google Chrome to live translate the page, they require you to type some things using the Ukrainian keyboard... so it's a total pain. But anyway, thanks for the thought! :) Already I very much appreciate you being on Patreon!
