Shin Lim would win Universe's Got Talent. Mind You I don't think this trick was as good as others he has done, but I understand he had to 'go big' for the final and also could not repeat his previous stuff.
@springbloom59406 жыл бұрын
ChubbyChecker182 A lot of the other stuff he did, largely went over everyone's head, because they arent magic fans. I think his most stunning performance, despite its simplicity, was his second audition, with Olivia.

@MinhKevinLAM6 жыл бұрын
I liked the act but it surprised me a lot because it doesn't feel like it's a Shin Lim act at all. He's truly evolved and changed his style over the course of AGT. And I do think he listened to Simon (not about the cards but about what Simon said meant which I think was something along the lines of : "If you stick so hard to the close up magic, it's gonna tire everyone and you won't win") in the sense of he tried to do more stage act after Simon critique than close up act leading ultimately to this final act.
@captaintortuga31916 жыл бұрын
Dude I think Simon's advice had nothing to do with it. I think Shin had that act in development for MONTHS before he ever even got through the auditions. I might be wrong, but I would bet that he had each evolution of his AGT performances storyboarded and in rehearsal before he even applied to be on the show.
@MinhKevinLAM6 жыл бұрын
Shin posted a video posted just a few hours ago in which he said that he only had 7 days to prepare for this act. While I'm not in Shin's head I think he planned to do the dream act as his final act and Simon critique changed those plans "forcing" him to create this new act.
@volitionant96826 жыл бұрын
Minh Kevin LAM I agree in this sense simon’s critique may have actually helped shin to win the competition. If Simon hadn’t said that, shin would’ve carried on with his original style and the wider American audience may have found it too repetitive, as these days modern people have short attention spans and are thus the only valid way of keeping their attention is through highly visual and big stage tricks.
@captaintortuga31916 жыл бұрын
Wow! I haven't seen that yet. If that's true and he built that routine on the fly, that's even more impressive! Thanks for calling my attention to it.
@sdsign42296 жыл бұрын
As much as we enjoy Shin Lim’s card handling and ingenious tricks, what made him truly unique was always his presentation with grand music and his stage persona. I kinda like that he’s using his persona with other kinds of card tricks, since he can only use Dream Act and 52 Shades of Red so many times before it feels repetitive. Certainly he modifies it very well, like making this one about a prediction, but if he’s gonna survive in Vegas for long-term success, he’s gonna have to do things that are more “stage-y”, and by that very nature, it won’t "feel like Shin Lim”, at least in terms of cards. This act was his way of saying, “Yeah, I do Vegas,” and all the judges believe him! So yeah, we ought to be prepared for a new version of Shin Lim. I say, “new version” and not “new Shin Lim" because his persona and music is what makes him “Shin Lim”, which, let’s be honest, should NEVER change :) But not only should we expect it, we should embrace it for the future of magic.

IMO, Shin Lim deserves to win based on pure talent !! If I was going to pay to see one of the finalists perform, it would be Shin Lim. On the other hand , if Courtney wants to pay ME to watch her shriek for an hour, I “might” do it....😵😵
@markpointer29676 жыл бұрын
Sparty 954 What I think you’re completely missing, is that this is NOT a magicians contest. It is a TALENT contest. So if the judges are not, themselves, knowledgeable magicians, who realise how hard it is to do, say, Shin’s moves (the way Penn & Teller do), then they won’t appreciate how much talent is involved, and that person may not progress. The judges have experience of judging talent across the board. If they think that a singer is better at pulling in a crowd than say, a card magician, then the singer will go further, even if, in your opinion, the card act is harder to to.
@sparty9546 жыл бұрын
Mark Pointer I understand your point. But it was my opinion and now that doesn’t matter since SHIN LIM WON!!!!
@markpointer29676 жыл бұрын
Sparty 954 Yep! Well done Shim, and well won! 👍
@sparty9546 жыл бұрын
Mark Pointer I do agree with you to a point. In the early rounds, it is the judges that send the talent through. But what YOU are COMPLETELY missing is that in the later rounds, it is America that is voting. Now, I am sure that some of the voters are magicians and can understand and appreciate the “moves that Shin does”. But the vast majority are regular Americans who might not have much experience with magic. The voters are voting based upon which act they feel they like the best and I agree with you , not based on how hard the moves are. It was only my opinion based on a TALENT show and my opinion was that Shin Lim has way more TALENT than the other contestants. America voted him the winner either because they like his act more or “maybe” appreciated the TALENT that he had over the other contestants.

What I love about this is that Shin Lim went into this entire competition with a plan for the entire contest. I think he knew all along the progression of routines he would do. He gradually went bigger and revealed more of his story as the rounds went along. I will be very upset if Janis Joplin cover girl wins. Would be OK if anybody else won besides her. However, Shin the most deserving- particularly to headline an entire Vegas show.

Tbh I was impressed until the final part with the floating cards. It was flashy, but for me it confirmed without a doubt that the nine of hearts was forced and/or Tyra was in on it. I'm sure he has forced choices onto his volunteers before, but it was still mysterious, because his slight of hand techniques were so good, and he would usually let them check his cards and props. But here, clearly they've rehearsed that cards on strings dance many times in preparation for this nine of hearts outcome, and we never got a chance to look at the dice up close. The trick probably would have been better without the cards on strings bit. Sometimes less is more. The Jack of clubs trick he did before this with the three volunteers was really good.

Not for nothing, but Shin showed the ideal formula to win AGT. Step #1, and perhaps the most challenging..,come up with an act that is on par or trumps your best act. So many acts give their best two acts in the first two performances as AGT pushes them to do. Shin resisted and did a new act for auditions, then used his proven acts for the middle, and dropped his ace in the hole new act for the win. Additionally, he dropped the pure non-talking performance, and built a story and identifiable persona. As deserving as Shin Lim was to win, it never would have happened without his plan of attack.
