Crystals form in clay filled cavities in volcanic / igneous rock formations like granite. Veins of thick quartz that is off white colour is a likely area. Vaugs are the clay hollows in the veins that contain the crystals that grow within them. Of course - all this occurred millions of years ago . Online research followed by just asking around the area leads to information as to where to look. Locals may not reveal all the spots but other prospectors often do give you some realistic idea as to exact precise localities in the area. Expect to search for quite a bit before you find a big fresh vaugs filled up to the brim like on Utube. Also rivers and streams contain some good stuff too and that is a lot easier to prospect. Best tools are strong legs and patience. Any place that has any easy road or map access is usually depleted mostly and quickly ; so walking hiking out to sites helps to find better spots. Take big backpack ; some food / water and phone !

Prospecting in NSW Australia; similar situation for smoky quartz however spot is well known and over the years got deleted ; however it was fun and a lot of hard - digging ( rock mining ) to extract the crystals ; found a few random pieces ; and bought a nice one off a local guy . Just a warning too - be very careful when you dig as it not always safe as it first may appear. You can fall, slip , etc and in a very remote area that is a hazard to really consider well. Safety first. Assess risk and dig options and be careful where you walk ; as sometimes there are covered holes and previous digs sites that you can tumble right into and if you are by self ( as I was ) then exercise extra due - care. HAPPY Prospecting everyone !!@🤠

Love love love the opening sequence. Love the old style country music. Really like the music all the way through. Love the gems being dug, love how you show each piece. 9 out of ten stars. only thing i would change is add some voices. We feel attached to the people digging as much as the magic of the crystals. Well done all around

Pardon my ignorance, but I want to start doing this. I understand the pay to dig sites and the free site digs, but are ya'll just finding spots on your own, and if so, how rare is it in the U.S. to be able to just hike around and start mining whenever and wherever you find something? Are these special places that allow it? Do you need some sort of permit? I'm in AZ and while it's considered a rockhounding mecca, my understanding of the law is that you can't take ANYTHING from the surface, let alone start mining. I'm not trying to say ya'll are doing anything wrong, I'm just trying to make sure I don't do anything wrong when I am finally able to start doing this. Thanks for any info you can provide.

This is an amazing video? You are both undoubtedly talented at finding great spots to hunt for crystals! Is it possible to find crystals like this in the United States? I'm a newbie to crystal mining as well as rockhounding and tumbling. I would never ask you to give away your secret spot out of respect for your expertise. Was just curious if specimens as beautiful as these can be found in the continental United States?
