Photography is often compared to painting since we are rendering a 3 dimensional scene in 2 dimensions. But in fact, we are more like musicians. Musicians work in sound energy, photographers work in light energy. This is why for photographers it is so important to learn the characteristics of light and how to find or create them: directon, diffusion, intensity and color. And you are right, my largest source is a 7'octa or banging hot lights through a 6.5' scrim for those soft edged, gradual shadow edge transitions. For nailing color, I like to use a color checker passport in each light setup. In post it nails color... although, accurate skin tones can often look better slightly warmed. The reason I put up with the size of my mamiya rb67, only 10 shots per roll and the cost, is exactly what you are saying about vinyl, it feels like I could walk into the image. The movie Oppenheimer shot on mf film has that feel. I have won and judged professional competitions and the first of 12 criteria is impact, and it's first for a reason. You are absolutely right on the importance in an image. Excellent video.

This is one of the best, most insightful and profound videos on LIGHT that I’ve seen… you took us on a journey of perception to put the matter of good light into a broader context of what is the “quality” of anything… superb!! I wish it never ended!!

Recently visited an exhibition of some of Anton Corbijn's work and really enjoyed his analogue shots, so much atmosphere, rough, grainy and not razor sharp. I just looks better! Makes me wonder if we need 100MP, APO lenses etc. in order to make good photo's. I have dusted my M2...

Insightful as always, coming from a lifetime of experience. The magic of light, isn’t it?

Thorsten, for headsets; have a look at Dan Clark Audio; hand built in California (a bit like a Leica😉); great headsets, light and a very wide soundstage; not to heavy or bright sounding and tunable. One of the toppers; precise instrument placement and depth. I use Roon for my FLAC library or Astell player + Noble Kaiser My M 240 arrives tomorrow, 50 and 90 Summicron; (I've been using KIEV4, Zeiss Super Ikonta RF for 6 years), to use next to my GFX; all the best from Belgium.

When you record video on the Leica SL for your KZbin videos, is there a way to power the camera so it doesn’t run out of battery? A bit of a random question but I can’t seem to find any answers online to this.

I use batteries,, and it works. The SL601 (2015 model) doesn't use a lot of battery. The SL2 eats battery like popcorn at an action movie.

@@MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard That’s good to know. Thank you for responding. The battery does seem to last a long time. I was also told by Leica that the new dummy battery for the SL2/3 would work for the original SL.

Greetings from Hong Kong. I really enjoyed this video Thorsten! I see you have a wonderful taste in audio equipment and not just cameras. You have shared some amazing insights and educated us that sharpness and high fidelity is not necessarily the only factor in determining the quality of the photograph. What is your take on Leica M11 Monochrome cameras for those of us who want to shoot in Black & White but don't want the hassle of developing film.

I can not agree more with you, just and the basic part in the process audio or photo is source, turntable in audio and lenses in camera, I use Linn LP12 in my audio Aktive Keltik Linn system and Sennheiser HD600 and 650 as headphones, just as you say, a great pleasure. Keep in mind my invitation to have a great coffee and a visit to Leica store in Mexico City, if you wish, just let me know.
