Look at 3.20 where the floor line magic plan marked is riding up the wall. That can’t be right?
@magicplan3 жыл бұрын
Hi James. What you're seeing is referred to as drift. Drift has been a known issue in ARKit for a while. During the "Tracking and Mapping" process in ARKit, the detected floor plane is shifted up and down a bit, and sometimes it makes this kind of error. Unfortunately, we can't do much about it. Without LIDAR, this makes our measurement inaccurate, but with LiDAR, since we are using sensor data, it doesn't make much difference. We understand it seems discouraging from a user perspective. Our advice would be to just go with it unless it looks completely off. We do quite a bit of normalization after the AR scan was completed. In most cases, the error will be minimal. And in general, try to have the best light conditions possible for initialization and move slower during capture.
@aljames73453 жыл бұрын
magicplan hi. That’s a fair reply I guess. Thank you. So with lidar, are you saying even though visually you can see apparent drift the measured walls are still correct results?

hi I've been using MagicPlan for a couple of years . . . and still/always have a couple of issues with corners - especially in kitchen with cabinets and with deep closets. great question :) no answer from magicplan until now :(( How does Magicplan link the different rooms of an apartment together? In the video they are surveyed one at a time and then placed next to each other: but this assumes that I know exactly how the house is made, which generally DOESN'T happen in professional reality ... When I survey an apartment, I have to find out if the rooms have orthogonal sides to each other or not: does the program find out? And then: it should be the software that gives me the concatenation of the rooms, the geometry, the inclined sides, the rotations ... otherwise it's only good for small orthogonal apartments ...

@petershirley20253 жыл бұрын
Magic plan has an unreal customer support team and when I approached them about the topic they told me that while current androids have lidar they don't have the multi-plane detection (hardware) that Apple does. Therefore until androids overcome that hardware limitation the wall detection won't transfer. That being said newer androids have very good software that makes mapping through placing corner markers very effective.

im curious if the cosine error of the laser measuring tape is the root of the error. i have a bosch as well and its exceptionally accurate but unless you can eliminate cosine error from the user, i think i'd trust the volumetric number from the lidar more than multiple measurements from the bosch. fwiw im an industrial tooling builder and am often working to less than a 5mm on projects over 200m. for individual cells i try to stay under 1mm, using the bosch i can keep 1mm reasonably easily, validated by real industrial laser metrology equipment, ie faro vantage and similar. to be able to achieve these results required reducing cosine error to a minimum. i've built a couple tripods that i level with a machine spirit level and match their heights when near the specified distance with a rotary laser, one is rolling, the other if fixed. i then use the bosch on a rolling tripod with a plumb bob to shoot a fixed tripod that also has a plumb bob on as well.

Does this class of scanner depend on planes/ straight lines/ corners to maintain accuracy, as some of your comments imply? I'm interested in the potential to 'hike' my rough, heavily-foliated property while scanning with something like this in order to produce a site model that would ideally consist of soil, rocks and larger trees. Lidar-equipped drone survey failed miserably due to dense vegetation - and over-processing by an inexperienced 'operator' - so I'm done with that approach.
