MP someone needs to come up with a foot blister kit. My wife has a walking route(usps) and literally walks 10-12 miles a day. We feel most won’t make it if they are an hour or two from home by car and have to walk. Just saying 😆

One thing I would take into account if walking is defense against chaffing. Gold Bond Friction Defense stick or a talcum powder. Getting chaffed between the thighs can become a serious mobility killer.

Especially if you live in a hot or humid area. Because once a rash forms it's going to be very hard to walk. I work in a hot environment inside of a factory and I usually try to keep some kind of body absorbent powder. Because preventing it is the best answer in the first place. Because once you form an irritation it's going to be all but impossible to walk and continue on.

I always suggest carrying an umbrella or a plastic bags you can use to keep your feet/socks dry in case of heavy rain or snow storm. An inexpensive plastic poncho is good as well.

I think about my feet all the time and want to add something to my bag. As a woman I might have sandals or dress shoes on which is not ideal take a trek home from who know where. I'd like to find something to add for my feet

I fucken love this guys videos! A lot of other channels show tactical bags an expensive gear and never even mention a spare change of clothes. He's right, its JUST A GET HOME BAG, its not a bug out bag. Extra clothes has saved my ass so many times. Once i was coming home from a wedding and my car broke down. I immediately changed into my spare clothes and walked into town to find phone service and a tow truck. Rather than walk around a strange town in a suit, i blended in with the local folks. The other time i shit myself at work (Dont judge it happens to everyone) and i grabbed my bag went into a porta potty and changed. Like nothing happend. Dude keep making videos like these. Love how everything is simple and not all tactical, sometimes you really just need to blend in with the locals.

My GHB... has a couple extras. Hot hands hand warmers to keep you warm on the move (small and light) and $50 in small bills. But other than that I think you hit the nail on the head!

I really recommend including an ace wrap and role of athletic tape in your bag too. Very easy to twist an ankle or hurt a wrist in and emergency, or you could carry those smaller ace braces for those uses. Either way light weight and you and had room in your side pockets for them either way.

With duct tape and the SWAT-T, you can do anything you can do with an ACE bandage that doesn't require drainage. It isn't the best TQ ever, it's 90% of the way there (at the point of a cravat or using your belt) and can be used for so much more.

Great kit! I live at altitude in Wyoming so I have a minimum of 2 extra jackets, hat, gloves, long underwear, and a balaclava in every vehicle. But my get home bag looks similar to yours. I would caution folks against putting your defensive tools in the bag. They should be carried on your body. But i realize some folks live in more restrictive states.

Solid foundation, lots of room for improvement. There’s no one-size-fits-all here either. How far is it home, what area, what terrain, what season? There’s a lot of stuff in your list that you don’t need within a day’s (on foot) travel of home. But if it’s several, you will need. I’m more in agreement with Bear on this concept: the bag is seasonal, and needs to be inspected & replenished with appropriate gear between hot seasons and cold ones, and vice-versa. So 2x annually minimum. Then you have multiple layers of gear, adding more the further you travel from home.

Great video. I too have an emergency bug out/get home bag. As an US Army veteran, it is my experience that there are a lot of folks that don't know how to tell direction, North, South, East, West. So I would suggest for people to add a small compass in their bag. It does not take much to get lost, if you don't know the direction you are heading or the direction you need to go.

As a general way to tell direction, sun rises in the east, sets in the west. It's not perfect but will give you a good idea of where to head early in the morning and as the sun sets.

A topo map in a plastic bag, when you have a fairly long distance to go. I drive about 45 min each way to get to work, and that's highway driving for all but the last 5 minutes of in town. I know two different routes to use when driving, but should I have to leave my vehicle and disappear into the countryside (or take back roads) for logistical reasons, I need a map that will show me what I can expect terrain-wise, so I can find the best route home. The distance also means that I understand that I WILL be having to plan on at least 1 overnight or more, depending on how far I'm able to get in my vehicle before having to abandon it. This means that I also have a couple of 6mil black trash bags folded up in my bag, for an extra emergency shelter / browse bed to keep me from being in direct contact with the ground, should I need it.

I put together a bug our bag years ago but was just thinking that I need a smaller bag just to get home if I get caught away from home. I like the goal zero charger and light combo and the survival tent. Everything thing else is pretty basic. I would add rechargeable head lamp duct tape,

Another thing to add if available for space. SHOES. I use to work in an office and would always keep a decent pair of boots (winter) or walking shoes in my get home bag because nobody wants to be walking miles home in a pair of dress oxfords. I’m a contractor now where we drive company trucks to job sites, so my plan every day is wearing work appropriate attire that benefits my ability to walk home. (Eg: EDC capability, decent footwear, calories, and water.) then my get home bag is a redundancy or a supplemental list of things until I get to a resupply point (my truck or home).

The best laid plans of mice and men .... One thing life has drilled into me: Murphy was 100% right -- If anything CAN go wrong, chances are it WILL. Trying to prepare for every single thing that can happen would drive you crazy. Knowing what to do and how to survive is absolutely necessary. It's much better to have the knowledge and skills set and not need it, than to need it and not have them. That's a recipe for disaster.

If you have one close to you, check flea markets. I have found so many things like backpacks, clothes, flashlights, knives, water bottles, etc...all at a fraction of retail. I understand that you may not find everything in one trip, but if you can take a few weekends, I highly suggest trying.

doesn't matter how big or small it is - one small piece of advice. Mine was stolen out of my car in 2015 and I am quite sure I lost a lot of money in the insurance reimbursement because I didn't have an itemized list of contents with cost. Keep an accurate inventory.

Definitely a good kit. I'd say this is pretty darn close to bare minimum but I think if you're willing to add to this kit I would add some wet wipes, TP, hand sanitizer b/c it has many uses, Vaseline cotton balls, 55gal trash bags, duct tape, and an n95 mask. I enjoy you'd videos. Keep em up!

i have lots of outdoor expirence in many extreme environments. water you will need most. what climate you live in will change your get home needs. well -0°f north or south here in FL. walking daily is good for you. it will also test & show your personal needs to pack.

One of the most overlooked camouflage. Plaid (tartan) or checkered shirts, or shirts with designs were all colors are earth tones (medium gray, olive green olive(coyote) tan, some black lines optional etc). Up clothes they are a patterned average looking clothing, in a distance they can blend in just as good as most camouflage clothing.

Great video, the only other bare minimum thing I could think to add may be some manmade fire tinder for extreme fire starting issues. The most basic is cotton balls soaked in Vaseline, and most everyone has both so they would probably be free too! Love your videos! Put fire starters in a bag as well and pack at least a cheap poncho, It will keep back pack dry and yourself as well. I put one pair of under garments too. Add skin bandage for feet, because most people never walked miles in there foitware and if you stuck with new sneaks and shoes, you will be in for rude awakening...prior military so I know. I fully agree with the 'grey man' tactic and with your GHB being an addition to your EDC. I always assume I already have the appropriate clothing for the season and environment so I limit myself to a change of underwear, socks, beanie, cheap poncho and mylar blanket together with tp and hand sanitizer in a waterproof bag. For quick repairs I do have some duct tape and zip ties. My first aid kit is just a boo boo kit but with some medication in there. I do have one of these star shaped 'keys' that will open most outdoor fresh water sources, community buildings, train carriages, public toilets, etc. I do have a small emergency hammock instead of a tent. The rest is pretty standard.

I used to have to do this occasionally when my bike broke down on long cycle rides. I used a poncho and light cheap tarp for shelter. When it buckets down you're not always in a place where you can set up a shelter. Private property ect. Few are going to bother moving you on huddled in a poncho under a tree in the rain but might get more cranky if you've set up a shelter. Platypus type water containers are very handy besides your solid canteen. They weigh almost nothing, roll up small and water can be hard to find so having additional capacity when available is handy. It's also tough to start out in the morning still dehydrated from the previous day with little to no water. Get some water last thing at night. Even if you don't wash anything else, wash your feet and take care of them, reason for having more water in the morning.

Good solid video. I would suggest including a paper map & compass, a silcox key, and 1 or 2 contractors trash bags. Also, I know your theme is "bare minimum, " which is a great concept, but it would not hurt to carry your electronics in a mini Faraday bag. If the grid goes down from a mass ejection or an emp, you really want that power bank to still be functional. The Faraday bag would just be that extra insurance you might be thankful for later.

Pretty sure we all passed the "Bare Minimum "Sign about 12 miles back. But all good suggestions. My only suggestion would be Add 3 Big Contractor bags and 3 to 10 Bic lighters. Heat isn't always an option but I'd trade a warm nite in proper attire for half the other stuff listed

In the Chicago region you could walk for miles and miles on major streets with sidewalks. But sturdy shoes are important. In the winter, boots are important because of slush, snow, puddles and ice. Also, a cap to cover your ears and gloves to protect your hands. Something happened in a suburb over thirty years ago. A young lady was stranded in the winter. This was before cell phones. She walked for help in the winter but died from exposure. I believe she was wearing dress clothes. It's awesome to get dressed nice for a party..But slacks, socks and boots can be put on even if a lady is wearing a dress.

Studying maps, even on your smart phone, during good times, can pay dividend in bad times. A thing prepared people do is study maps to/from common travel locations (work, family, grocery stores) and randomly drive alternate routes. Side streets maybe considerably slower than the main highway when driving, but may be shorter if you're ever forced to walk. Also alternate routes can be seen to better estimate threats if you ever are forced to be on foot. Though railroad tracks are extremely dangerous to walk, in an extreme emergency may actually be safer short cut or to cross narrow/smaller rivets/creeks. Knowing where rivers and creeks go may also be useful for short cuts, from one major road to the next...just be aware of flood causing weather, especially up stream...if you can. Carry updated street or road maps in your car, or go to the geological survey site to order a custom satellite imagery map of your area.

When on a last minute camping trip this weekend, took the bug out bag. Forgetting what all was in it. Turns out everything I needed to start a fire, first aid kit was also used for someone. Enough flashlights and batteries. And 5 days worth of food (1 meal a day) and water. When to an area and seen a boat ramp long enough to land 2 full size helicopters on it. That's how low the water is in parts of Utah.

I have similar bag, but call it an overnight bag. My wife daughter and I carry our bags on road trips and have the option of staying overnight in a hotel. We keep the survival stuff to a minimum to reduce weight and only have ponchos for cover. I don't the weight if the self defense stuff is worth the weight, but small denomination bills and a roll of quarters are useful.

I would suggest that you have shoes that are good for walking in, or boots in the winter, just in case the shoes you are wearing, such as dress shoes, sandals, or heels, would not work well. Also have paper maps of any areas you might need to travel through, and a compass.

Oh thank you for covering this. We just bought a smaller car and my get home bag doesn’t fit in it without taking up a lot of room. Plus I still have my EDC stuff already with me.

Excellent minimalist bag, should do the trick. Better than the time l kept tweaking my bag and ended up with 12 knives and a jar Peanut butter and just in case l lost the knives l had a Kukri.

Knowledge is the best tool you can have. Expect your get home bag is going to fail same with a bug out bag. Plan routes home from the common places you go to like work, shopping places, and hang outs.

I think you did a great job on the bag i would of put foot an hand warmers in it only because most city get colder at night an if you mix that with that 2 man tent brother u going to be nice an toasty no matter how cold it gets well at least for 8 hours

Great video and great ideas. I saw a few items I need to add to my get home bag I was thinking how about cash, in case you need to stop somewhere. If there's a power outage, if you have to stop at a store or whatever, having cash in small bills could come in handy and weighs nothing

I'm in the 'burbs. I am seldom more than 15mi from home. I carry, at minimum, enough cash to get a ride home.

I’d change out that iffy SWAT tourniquet for a much better CAT. It’s easier to use and fantastic for one handed self application.

One thing I try to stay aware of is the extreme temps in a vehicle. I've got just about everything you mentioned here, but food, meds, batteries etc don't always hold up well to the heat and cold. Just have to take it out but if you forget it then you could be screwed. I leave mine in the truck. Better to be lookin at it than lookin for it! 👊👍

Good basic bag. It's always nice to hear people stress that a GHB is dependent on your circumstances, region, and how far you realistically may have to go. I see a lot of people with 80L packs with enough stuff to live in the woods for months trying to tell people they have to have all that or don't even bother. If you live in the middle of Montana and are regularly 200 miles from home then fine but the guy who is urban and only needs to go 20 miles max might get by with a fanny pack. The only suggestion I would make, being an EMT for 35 years, is if you're going to carry a tourniquet then get one that you can apply to yourself. Those SWAT-Ts have their uses but they're damn near impossible to effectively put on yourself. A CAT or a SOFT-T can be self-applied in seconds and are the gold standard for military, LE, and EMS.

Good video, like the idea of a light weight bag. But there was 2 things I differ with. 1: Your med kit, I understand it's a boo boo kit. But mole skin, if someone is not use to walking long distances one would develop blisters. Also, the tournicate is a nice choice for children or on someone else. But trying to use that type for self aid is difficult. Doable but difficult. 2: A sillcock key for business / industrial water taps.

I put together a get home bag and made sure it will last at least 3 days. In the past few years I haven’t been more then a 3 hour drive from my house. I figured a 1 hour drive will take about 1 day to get back home. A 3 hour drive will probably take 3-4 days. I have a Camelbak and I recently got my wife an off brand hydration pack. I was telling my brother what I was doing and he said to just call a tow truck or an Uber. I tried explaining why that may not be possible in some situations but he didn’t understand lol.

It's all fun and games until you call the tow truck and it's a 5-hour wait in harsh weather. Tow services get overwhelmed FAST.
