In this video I'm braking down how the Sony A7IV works with different memory cards. Sony A7IV has two slots that can take either two SD UHS-II card, or one SD UHS-II card and one CF type A card. CF-A cards are really fast, but can you really benefit from the speed of these cards? It does depend from the way you shoot and your workflow. Check out my thoughts on the subject!

Great video! Wish I'd seen it long ago! I'd test cards by using them and stop-watching the reads and writes. 'ish' was even more pervasive doing it that way. My 128GB 250 MB/s cards are now more capable than my camera as I'm still a D7200 shooter. Not active enough now to justify the A7iv. I had it a week, loved it and just returned it, due to not being able to justify the hassle and expense of replacing all my lenses, battery grip, speedlight and studio lighting gear, flash triggers ...etc., etc., to move from Nikon D7200 to the A7iv. Nothing is really compatible. Higher speed and buffer than I get with the D7200 isn't important, because for me, life is too short to allocate so much time reviewing many thousands of images after a wedding, Polo, Rodeo or field sports event and trying to micro-decide among 15 or 20 minutely different versions. Been there, done that ...and not going there. For me the beauty of the A7iv is its instant subject acquisition, WYSIWYG certainty, superb handling and its likelihood of still being a great camera 5 years from now. That said, I'm always interested in informative videos like this. You went beyond what I'd hoped for based on your title and I finally feel confident about my understanding of the card/camera/reader/storage-device relationship. Thanks for that!

Thanks for the video. I thought on A7IV, for stills, it helps to have SD UHS-II cards with a V90 rating since they have better sustained minimum write speeds. Any comment?

As always great video! I would add to your list of suggestions my way of using cards. I buy the largest and fastest card I will ever need on a wedding without swapping them out. Two reasons I do: Fear of card breakdown due to wearing off and money saving. I NEVER remove my cards :)

Thanks! Haha, I used to do opposite - using smaller cards (64GB), so in case of failure you loose only part of the data. My friend once had this weird case, that data was corrupted on both cards due to the camera malfunction (not Sony). But I’m leaning towards moving to bigger 256GB cards for all day with those a tough cards too 👌🏻

When I record 10 bit video on my a7iv and try to import it to my iPhone and Mac, neither of them can import or play them. Is it because I need a different sd card, or is it because the phone and Mac can’t support it?

I just ordered 3 Sony 160 GB cf express type a cards for my sony fx30 and 1 for my Sony A7IV, already have a V90 that i will use on slot 2 on the A7IV, for some reason the FB gurus keep telling me to return the cf express card for v90. But I feel like if I have the Budget at the moment why not go for the best. Ive always been the type that if its within my budget ill go for the top tier. Thank you for the review

I use Sandisk Extreme Pro 95mb -sd cards on my Sony A7r3´s.I just have those around and I haven't found the need to buy new ones yet. I admit that this is not the best option to have and of course there will be limitations due tot he buffer when actually using those cards. Yet I have found that this is manageable considering my style of taking photos.There is just few moments here and there where I take multiple photos and in those moments the buffer is good enough. Set your camera on continuous medium and you can take one or more photos without going into settings. I am also a wedding photographer -just to give some context. Yeah dude! I used these too with A7RIII. But also - A7RIII had only UHS-I slot 2, so when shooting dual RAWs on this camera you cannot benefit from anything faster than these 95MB/s. What I did though was using faster cards in one slot, so I can copy files from it faster.

Why is there no limit with lossless compressed and a limit for compressed when using the M card? Isn’t the compressed file smaller?

You should also keep in mind that all UHS I cards have a maximum speed of 104Mb/s when manufactures advertise more than this it means that it is only possible when you use THEIR readers with THEIR cards.

Thanks for your video guide. Quick follow up question: On the A7IV, could you get a V90 card and put it into slot 1 for fast shooting and all video modes and put a V60 card into slot 2 for using just as a backup card?

Do we need same cards to ZV-e10 too ? When we set 4k30 no HDR bitrstr will reach 100mbit but 8bit so sdxc card v30 with writing speed 104mbs is enough ? Same model suport HDR but still 8 bit

Kingston React Plus uhs ii are a great deal! Cheapest uhs ii i've seen and they even come with a uhs ii card reader.

Hi Magic and thanks for your great videos on the channel.. I would just have a question : I shoot Raw on the CF Express A card on my A7IV and video on a Sundisk 64 300 M/S sd card. Can you please confirm that, in this case, it is important to have the fastest card on the second slot (I don't shoot simultaneous, as a hybrid wedding photographer). What I need is to have my pictures recorded as fast as possible before keeping going on video (first look, first kiss etc..) when I do both, photo and video with my A7IV. Finally, an external Sundisk external drive with with reading and writing at 1000 MB is good, do you agree ? Many thanks for your help in making all of us improve photography 🙂

Hey Olivier! Sorry for late reply, I needed to make a test haha. So - before starting video recording on a second slot after shooting burst of photos on slot 1 the camera needs to clear the buffer first. So the fastest way to get photos clear from buffer on slot 1 is to use the fastest CF-A card, but using a fastest SD - the 300MB/s ones is not that far behind. I just shoot burst of 50 compressed RAW photos and switched immediately to video - it took camera around 1 sec to clear the buffer and let me film. Hope that helps

Only for the CF type A new cards. All SD cards can be read with all the SD readers.

I think Sony Tough G 256GB SD( 300/299) is the best. I know Sony has Sony Tough G CFexpress Type A 640GB but it is overkill and not compatible with some new body like ZV-E1.
