At over 60 years of age now, I've definitely seen flashlighghts change. In my Army days, we had the L-shaped 2 D cell lights that every soldier carried (shout out to old soldiers who know what BA-30s were). Those things were probably 20-30 lumens at the best. It was never advertised to us... we just ordered them, they came, and that was what we used. As Maglite grew into something of its own, we started carrying one or two of the 2 and 3 D cell Mags in our armored vehicles, just as added support. Later on, some of us carried mini Maglites (2 AA) as add-ons. Streamlight wasn't even something that I had any experience with in the military, although nowadays, every "soldier store" is stacked with them. Still... now that I'm no longer in the roles I was in during those years, I'm finding a lot more favor with NOT the "military considered" lights. I'm most favorable to Nitecore, Fenix, Thrunite, Wow-Tac, and O-Lights. But, again with the current surge of these lights, I do find myself still favoring the ones that have the simple one button functions of firefly-low-med-high-strobe. One thing I don't want is to have need to carry a freaking operator's manual around with me in order to use my lights. As for this light that Aaron is showing here? ... too little and too late for Maglite in my opinion. There are many better options available to us all in that price range. Thanks Aaron... you know I love your work (all of your work, brother), but had to add my opinion. Something I'd like to see is the best "instant on red" headlamps that you like. I don't think people get the relevance of having instant red (saving natural night vision, etc). There are a few headlamps out there that offer this... I'd like to see what you and others think might be best at it. I have my favorite, and I will share if and when that opportunity arises. God bless... hope you get over that Retreat crud... I get it myself when I'm out with the high schoolers especially.

Maglites are practical for the layman who shops at Home Depot and needs a basic, general use or emergency flashlight. The 3rd generation flagship models, the ML100L 3D light and the classic Mini-Mag LED and mini-mag LED PRO AA lights are still the best lights you can purchase at big box retail stores like Home Depot or Walmart. Push the button and light comes on. Push button again and light turns off. It allows you to see in the dark. The batteries they use: AA, AAA and D cell are the most commonly sourced batteries on the planet and in a disaster or emergency situation that is far more useful than trying to find expensive and hard to source CR123's. With a power outage your 18650's wont be rechargeable. Also, Maglite focusses on runtime over power output. Sure, 1000 lumens on four D cells doesn't sound impressive, but that series of batteries will power the light for TWO WEEKS straight with usable output. No CR123 or 18650 light can run that long on a single set of batteries. I use Surefire lights on my rifles, shotguns and handguns for defensive purposes because they are the best quality lights in terms of durability and reliability. I trust my life to them. For hunting, fishing and general outdoor use I think Streamlight reigns supreme. They have a very diverse line of WATERPROOF lights (IPX7 and IPX8 rated) that accept multiple battery sources, some will take CR123 and/or AA or 18650. (They call it multi-fuel) Overall they have the most diverse assortment of specialty designed lighting products to suit a wide variety of needs. They OWN the Law Enforcement market with their rechargeable Stinger series and virtually every Firefighter in the country has a Streamlight Survivor clipped to their turnout gear. But do NOT discount Maglite because they still offer the most iconic, basic, standard issue, essence of a flashlight in their AA and D cell models. Maglite is America's flashlight. They just work and they are the most practical illumination tool for the balance of simplicity, cost and availability.

I’ve had a cheap 12$ mag light that uses 2 AAA batteries. It’s lasted 3 years as a hammer, pry tool, flashlight, and even a fire poker. I trust it to last me a long time. It’s cheap, not bright, but works through anything, and batteries last forever.

Tactical flashlights get a lot of attention, but the C and D LED maglites are very practical for their generous battery life. The ability to switch between flood, mixed beam, and hot spot is also useful; tactical flashlights usually require you to change out the lens to do that

I remember when I first started crewing Chinooks, we needed a 3 D cell maglight for performing duties at night. Now you can get a light 10x brighter the size of your pinky finger. Maglight started making LED lights late and they were under powered and OVER priced. Frankly I am amazed they havent gone belly up yet.

$55 for a USA made flashlight isn’t a bad price. Solid build quality and 300lm is plenty. 1500lm lights are great but not when the battery runs out after 30mins and the light is red hot. I know what you mean if you are comparing them to made in China brands but they never last. I bet that mag would last at least 10 years with no problems.

@@JM-uo5vp mag tac cr123 $95 on Maglite's site right now with a single 320lm 4hr setting. I just don't think Maglite is anywhere near the competition. 320lm is about perfect for around the house/yard but when you deal with cattle, chickens and predators out in the boonies. 320 just ant enough

That's because MAGLITEs mainly use bulky Alkaline batteries AA, AAA, and the big chunky C and D cells. I actually like having a Big Heavy Flashlight in my hand because your brain is constantly updating that you have a flashlight in your hand. If I were to carry a small lightweight bright LED torch in my hand or pocket, I might forget I'm holding it. Also, obviously a MAGLITE can be used as a Baton.

I have the same model and enjoy using it; it's not the brightest or the most versatile tactical flashlight, but the light is plenty bright enough in most day to day applications and it's very simple to use. Designed really for the single output user. The electronic switch is super quiet and a feature you might expect to find on higher end tactical lights. The 320lm output is also helpful as it has prolongs battery life; quite helpful if you're running primaries. For the price that it's going for nowadays it's not a bad deal. The Polytac is probably better value for most though - it's much more versatile and now the Polytac X has the rechargeable 18650, making it much cheaper to run

The newest rechargeable Mag-Tac has a max output of 671 lumens, with a low mode of 22 lumens. What I would like to see is a Mag-Tac that can swap between CR-123s and a USB rechargeable 18650, like the Polytac X that I bought. But I still really like my two Mags: a ML300LX (with incredible runtimes) and an XL50.

I think Maglite really needs to step up their game, especially with so many competitive options now...I still really like the big ol' lights from back in the day...just something iconic about them. But, practically speaking I would much rather like to see a whole redesign on their product line to include more tactically oriented options with much higher lumens & more modern features. This one is a pass for me. However, excellent review as always...Thanks Aaron...Keep it up bro!

Have quite a few maglites including this one. Had some chinese brands too, but where they might have more output, their quality isn't where maglite is. Great light, but for some simple camping around the house lighting you are better off with the AA mini proplus 351lm. More output with cheaper batteries plus an eco mode that will be used more than a strobe.

In my opinion, maybe a little too big for edc. However, I'd get a few and toss one in the glovebox of my Jeep, my backpack that I carry at work, and maybe in my night stand, assuming I already didn't have a WML on most of my guns. In my night stand I have a full size M&P with a streamlight. Plus my EDC has an o light. Plus my AR has a light. The only one I'd need is my shotgun, but in all honesty I would probably grab my AR, considering it's on my side of the bed

The anodized aluminum frame with nitrite firearm finish is what sold me. No more key scratches on a T6 tempered aluminum light. 2m drop rating, 1m waterproof rating etc. The standard CR123 disposables put out 3.3v each 1500 mAh draining to 2.5v. If you get 650-900mAh 16340s for your magtac they put out 4.2v each and stay 85% of their life at 3.8v. They are rechargeable & brighter (Lux meter reads 380 lumens at 3.9v per cell) cause of the 7.4-8.4v rather than the 6.6v from disposables. I get 20-40 minutes out of each set of 650 mAh's depending on use. (10 short dog walks). I bought (x2) 4 packs for 7$ each on eBay. No better light IMHO. Momentary saves power for quick flashes of where you are going, built in throw and fixed flood, 1 hand operation instead of giving my flashlight a hand job to turn it on. I got the crown over the plain because strobes good for warding off large game in my area like 1600 lb black bears. Also I can peel a guys head open like a potato if I need to defend myself. With the momentary full power, the light saving is useless for me. Plus if the full power is too bright, DONT use the hotspot! Tilt the light and use the fixed flood for its 50 lumen low light. Or unscrew the cap some and it dims. Again the plain bezel power saving mode is useless. Especially with lithiums lol. Save power? What for? I have 8 batteries to hot swap as they weigh 6 grams each! Also in 1 amp mode they re charge in 35 minutes not the healthiest for the batteries might lose half of your life cycles (300vs600) but its usefull. In 0.5 Amp mode they charge in 1 hour saving your life cycles. I even got a 300 mAh charger that takes 2 hours to baby my batteries if I want to get all 600 cycles out of a set. Just make sure to take them out before they die so they dont drain to 2.5v to get all your cycles out of your batteries (you'll get use to it getting dim at 3.0v). 2.5v wont kill them, but you'll get less recharges. I pull them out and check the voltage in my charger once every few days. With the added voltage you get 220m or 718ft beam distance. DONT get the rechargeable version of this light with the charge dock. the wireless charge rings if they get scratched they use power, cause charging problems, and can get stuck in strobe mode. makes the durability go to trash 1m drop rating vs the 2m of the CR123 version.

weirdly enough the plain bezel version of the Mag-Tac does have a low and high power setting but removes the momentary feature that allows you to have the light on only when holding it. Personally this feels worth giving up for a low setting. It does only put out 310 lumens but is around $10 cheaper. Other then those changes it is the same flashlight so as long as you don't mind the aluminum body it actually would be worth it as the high feature is 4 hours and the low is 17 hours.

I grew up in the 90s and my 2xaaa and 2xAA incandescent mag lights were my good ones.. I found one of my old aaa ones last week and while it’s fine for what it is, it’s laughable by today’s standards. I think it puts out about 9lm. I also had a couple early aa led models in the mid-late 2000s and while they were fine for camping back then, things have come a long way.. although I did frequently use these lights as hammers for tent stakes lol. Always held up fine! Changed the batteries every couple weeks and never really needed anything more. I also liked that they were maybe $20 at most so I wasn’t too upset about occasionally losing them. The more. Modern 3xaaa and cr123 models never appealed to me. Just stupid battery configurations. I pretty much only use 18650 and single aaa nimh these days.

Have you ever checked out solarforce flashlights? Imported yes, but good quality for sure. Their L2P is a typical 18650 or 2 X CR123. Pick a drop in (led, reflector and driver assembly) to fit your lumen output and battery voltage. You can add different tail switches and bezels, the model L2D has a side switch reminiscent of the Maglite. Add the M3 head and it looks even more like my old maglite with impressive throw. Be careful though, 2 or 3 bodies, some dropins, an M3 head, and an assortment of tail switches and bezels...it's like Legos...or worse, a barbie doll without accessories! But I am very pleased with the balance between quality and price. Especially since I can customize!

Mini maglite are will built but problem is to turn it on you need to twist its head and the reflector are not strong enough to collect alot of the lumens. I have also use 2D maglite, there good too for whacking people but still paying 2D battery then AA or AAA, is a waste of money, When you want lightweight then mini maglite is a okay light for you with less cost. You can find rechargeable Nimh AA/AAA battery anywhere in the store. Im a Led Lenser and Coast Led lenser brand better quality feel better in the hand, press button power on, plus better reflector lense thats grab more light and output more then maglite. As a comparison LED Lenser P5.2r 270 270 lumens is times better then Mini Maglite 272 lumens. Yes I did compare both and LED lenser is 40% much brighter then maglite and when you try to throw the light distance, you can see a tighter focus on the led lenser where the maglite its okay. Sorry maglite isn't doing will

Nezuko Vang The new Mini Maglite AA’s are 351 lumens with 2 1/2 hour battery life. With some eneloops that’s freaking epic. And unlike the Chinese options they are well designed and don’t become instant hand ovens (looking at you Lumintop) and they use a STRONG high grade aluminum the Chinese lights I have (Streamlight ProTac, Nitecore, Lumintop) deform when dropped and they’re a lot thicker aluminum, but very cheap soft aluminum.

At the $55 price point, I need more Lumen out than any of these 3. I only paid $65 for my Felix pd35 that is 1000 Lumens max output. Heck, I only paid $45 for my EastShine that is advertised at 1000 Lumen, but it actually shines brighter. It is much brighter than my fenix, Nitecore, and o light 1000 Lumen lights . You can get a Thorfire VG-15S for under $30 and is advertised as 1000 Lumen, but I think is actually closer to 800 Lumen. Still, more lumens for less than the $55 maglite.

I recommend the NITECORE SRT 3 Defender. Takes both AA and CR 123 with many more modes with an adjustable brightness feature. Strike bezel in front and a recessed button to allow as a stand. Just look at Olight, Lumintop, and many more brands. They are better machined to a great finish. Technology is updated yearly, difference colour temperatures of the Led is available. Lastly you get them in different materials such as titanium, brass stainless for the same cost as a maglite which is normal more more money for something 5 years out of date. Maglite, I want you to succeed. However no innovation. For instance, why hasn't there be a Double AA torch with a 18650 Battery? Why have they used the 14500 battery for small Maglites. The solitaire hasn't been upgraded in years..47 Lumes and poor run times. The larger lights, a plastic lens when others have glass as standard? Plus for the same price as a larger torch it has no batterys. Why has it not gone out of business?
